The Editors present the story of the yeor of 1953 ACKNOWLEDGEM ENTS Printer---Mansfield Advertiser Engraver-Grit Publishing Company Photographer-Lent Studio Book Binder-Kurtz Brothers Dedication We, the Class of 1953, dedicate this Annual to Miss Edna Mae Etzrodt in sincere appreciation for her devoted interest toward the publication ot this Smithsonian. Many long hours of untiring endeavor have been expended by Miss Etzrodt in assuring the success of this Book-hours which we trust were not unrewarding in gratitude, nor tedious in actuality. It is not only for her labors on our behalf that she merits this tribute fthough they were many and ettective,l but also for the innumerable quali- ties and characteristics which are indicative of Miss Etzrodt's high calibre as a teacher in the truest sense of the Word. When We wearied and grew dis- couraged with the tasks demanded of us in regard to the Annual, she cheered us on with her dynamic courage. Under her guidance We have achieved our goal. In the classroom she has instructed us, imparting not only the knowl- edge in her field, but that degree of integrity in her personality which trans- cends all latitudes ot informative matter. Inside or ouside the classroom Miss Etzrodt has personified the ideals which are expressed in the following poem. DEEDS OF TODAY The only time we have to use is furnished by today: We must not Waste while moments flee, for time does not delay. The hours of day are given once, so We must be prepared To use our talents for the best, no effort must be spared. When door of day is closed by night, and darkness hides the sun, We then may count the pleasures gained from deeds which were well done. -Everett W. Hill. I Class Hlstory We, the Class of '53, leave this record, our history, commencing as green Freshmen in the year of 1949. Five new members joined us at the beginning of our high school career-Jack Peterson from Waverly, David Lewis of Bentley Creek, Dorothy and Mary Dickerson from Centerville, and Claudetta Wittig, who transferred from Michigan. Freshmen initiation was our first unfortunate ex- perience, with the Seniors sparing no sympathy. Somehow we managed to survive. Before the year was over, Addison Phelps and Duane Bodine left to seek employment. In the Fall of 1950 we came back as Sophomores to welcome Harry Swan and Joseph Sperbeck from Ridgeburyg Mary Varney, a transfer student from Troyg Ellen Metje from New Jersey and Shirley Scoza from Buffalo, New York. During the summer, Jack Peterson had moved back to Waverly. Early in the term our class originated a school paper, the purpose of which was to raise money for our Washington trip. As a second project a dance was sponsored, featuring Curt Bennett's Orchestra. Mary Dickerson terminated her school career to become employed, and Howard Everson to enter the Armed Forces. As jaunty Juniors we returned in 1951. Our num- ber remained the same as in the previous year. The school paper was relinquished to the succeeding Sophomore class, and we assumed Junior responsi- bilities. Our first act was sponsoring a Halloween Party, a notable success, which boosted our treasury considerably. Preparations for the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet were then begun. This was prepared and served by us under the supervision of our Home Economics instructor, Miss Jeannine Rockwell, and our sponsors, Miss Ellen Bustin and Mr. William Lange. We afforded great amusement to all in presenting gifts with appropriate verses to the Sen- iors. Mr. Raker gave a little speech entitled Love which enlightened everyone present. In addition to this banquet we served three others, namely: Vet- erans of Foreign Wars lPost 73783, the Troy Lions Club and the Alumni Banquet. At each of these over one hundred fifty were served. Attention shifted to our Junior play Cracked Nutts, a comedy in three acts by Jay Tobias. After weeks of struggling to learn the lines, and many hours of practice, this was a success. During this year, JoAnne Phelps left us to be- come our first bride. Norma Sargeant moved to Ohio, Myrtle South remained at home to help her family, Carl Spencer and Joseph Sperbeck obtained employment. Thus, our number was decreased to twenty-one. We returned as Seniors to spend our last year at Smithfield-Ridgebury High - our number nov,- twenty fbecause Iona Fletcher failed to return. School was not in session long before construction on the new grade school building had begun. Trailers moved in, steam shovels, bulldozers and men started to work. It wasn't but a short time before we saw a big excavation outside the main entrance. As we watched, the foundation was laid, and we knew by the progress that was being made that our building would be completed in a few months. During the first month of school plans were made for a dance which was held in October. Our last stage performance, Backwoods Romeo, a comedy in three acts by John Nash was presented in Nov- ember. In the latter part of November our class was honored by a banquet given by the Junior class and served by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars tPost 73781. This was a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Work was then started on the yearbook. The Senior pictures were taken at Lent's Studio in Sayre. Three days were spent soliciting nearby towns for advertisements. Our advertisers were very coopera- tive and generous. At this time, Marian Harbst, a transfer from Le- Raysville, became a member of our class. Just before Christmas vacation, Dorothy Dickerson in- formed us she was 'going to be married February 14, 1953. Reluctantly, we lbid her farewell and wished her happiness. After Christmas another new mem- ber, Jacob Scholl, transferred from Pottstown. Towards the end of the year plans were formu- lated to serve a banquet for the Big Pond Lions Club. In the middle of May our class went by bus on the traditional Washington trip. Mr. Hastings chap- eroned us. Last, but not least, Commencement night, preceded by Class Night and Baccalaureate, arrived to terminate our happy high school days. Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball This year the Tigers opened their basketball season December 5, playing a non-league game wi'h New Albany followed by another with Covington. Both were warm-up games for the big one against Athens. The Athens game was one of the brightest highlights of the season. Alhough lost by seven points, it was definitely the best game we played this year. The league game started December l9 with a win over Rome, followed by a victory over St. Agnes. After Christmas vacation we played our arch rivals, LeRaysville, and were beaten by five points. This victory for LeRaysville game them undis- putecl first place in the Northern Division. i We were victorious in the next two games, but were upset by St. Agnes, a fast, scrappy underdog. The second game with LeRaysville was just as exciting as the first although we lost this one by seven points. The last league game with Ulster ended in victory for the Tigers. The annual tournament at Mansfield State Teachers College was held again this year. East Smithfield drew a strong team in Susquehanna-Wyom- ing Ioint High School and came out on the short end of a .59-48 score. With the addition of some of the members of our dynamic Iunior Varsity team, our chance for a victorious season will be renewed next season. DRIVER TRAINING llriver Training was a new course added to our curriculum this year. The course consists of lessons in classroom instruction and the actual operation of a motor vehicle. Our enrollment this year was limited to students in the Junior and Senior Classes.. The group was divided into two sections each studying the course for one semester. This course has proven to be one ot' the most pop- ular in our curriculum. TUMBLING TEAM Last year was the first year for an exhibition tumbling team. The team consists mostly of young- er stndentsg however. a few older students have become quite adept in this activity. Exhibitions have been presented between halves of basketball games and at many gatherings held in the gymnasium. . .. F ,A 5 ZR.. , . Qblflf YI V . .pm Q Q agp . 1 . -. va. Q 4 x w .
