Aux AQ- ,I- ,. .... , ,. .+ gr MH Q A NW PHOYIIHH 1' Reading, writing, and arithmetic, the basis of all courses of study, took on a unique form indeed at Smithfield High School this year with the inclusion in the curriculum of a new course, the science of mining. And, in a measure, it again has proved the truth in the old nif-you- build-a-better-mousetrap' adage. For frequently during the past year the interest of educators and industrialists from all parts of the state, a.nd, for that matter, the nation has been centered on litt1e Smithfield high school,n comparatively speaking. The Smithfield Board of Education, Superintendent Paul M. Skinner, Instructor Clyde H. Sutherland and officials of the Hanna Coal Company together conceived the idea and together cooperated to institute their educational experiment. Their idea became a reality and their experiment is fast-becoming a permanent though ever-expanding part of the sohool's program. And not only of this school, but others both near here and not so near are contemplating similar courses. However, in this Buckeye State with its many coal mines, it was Smithfield that pioneered in being the first high school to five nining a place in its curriculum. The mining course, as it ho. been developed by r. Sutherland, is both theoretical and practical. Principles of chemistry, physics, and mathe matics are taught, not as abstract principles but as they relate to the science of mining Every phase of the business of mining has been con sidered by the class this year from the grimy, underground work of the shot 'irer to the organization and finesse of lianna's top executive offices in Cleveland. lr Sutherland prepared the boys for these things in the class but, as the pictures on the previous page illustrate they then no Jed out of the classroom and onto the scene of action. For one day Hanna personnel step ped aside and watched while tomorrow's men took over. Thus, on the job, they learned that a well regulated, orderly, profitable company is neces sary if real job security is to be had by thousands of employees in the coal industry. Sm1thfield's mining course, which has been sporen of as one of the most odtstandinv and progressive, forward steps in the recent history of high school educntionu has, it is true, brought recognition to the school. However this was not the motivating pdrpose behind the course. It was, rather, an eff ort to more adequately serve tae studerts of the school in relation to their needs. So, it seemed natural that with coal 'Lining one of the principal industries in eastern Ohio, many high school graduates who do not contemplate collece wou d be at a vocational advantage if their high school work might include some formal training in mining practices. In this 1ts first year the course included, among other things, the theory and pr ctice of coal mine ventilation, drainage, explosives and blasting, geology, mining 'machinery and metnofls, the study of the charset eristics and use of electricity in coal mining noxious vases and their control the use of rock dust for preventing coal dust explosions, the stLdy of safety as it relates to the con ution of mines and to the working habits of individual work: en. The bois have been Given instruction in the use of such instruments as water gauges, anenometers, hygroneters, baro meters, flame safety lamns, and altirreters. 'lhelr training and instruction also has included instruction in tee theory, and use of self rescuers, all ervice ras n-asks and oxygen breathing apoaratus. Thus the ffround vork of S.h.S.'s science of rnning class has been laid. uture expansion likelv will include an extension to at lea t a two year course and correlation bet een the theory and practice of mining will b ever' more closely knit with the addition of a machine shop. here actial shoo work will be done to accompany formal classroom units. In fact Smithfield High School and the Hanna Coal Cozpanf are together making available the opportunity and the equipment for a mirunz course of high calibre, from the scholastic standpoint, and of great oracticability from the vocational standpoint. 'r'l'-at it can be made to xrean in future dividends is an individual matter with each student. Smithfield High is proud that its leaders had the vision and the cour age to pioneer in respect to tae coal mining course but the greatest satis fact on to the school officials and to Br. Suthelland cores, not with the achievement of anv records, but with the realization that through it they have been better able to serve their students. '45fsEag I Q'v.v' 'Q' 0.0 lf 9: '. O.
