PUBLIC LIBRARY OF mimo Q m AND SIV3ITHF1ELD - SMITHFiELorN. ' C. lOHNSTON COUNTS ROOM SHIELD Volume XVI Smithfield High School Smithfield, North Carolina Co-Editors Van Denning and Wingate Lassiter Foreword We awoke on school mornings to find a new day of challenges with hope that everything would turn out all right. The day moved along and, by sixth period, hearts were light and cares were forgotten. We lived for weekends and counted the days until a holiday. We let off steam at football and basketball games, at the parish house, and during lunch period. Not a single day passed without foolishness from someone. These happy times were necessary, because we had our share of anxiety and tension. But we were always optimistic. We have produced this, the 1965 Shield, to offer only a hint of our hardships and to present tangible evidence that we had the time of our lives ! 2 JACKSON HOWARD TEMPLE ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY MR. A. G. GLENN, Principal If there is a tireless man in our community, it must be the principal of Smithfield High School. His devotion to youth is unfailing and inexhaustible. It can truly be said that this man ' s relationship to his students reaches far beyond that of an ordinary princi- pal. As a public servant, his time is spent enriching the lives of our future leaders. Mr. Glenn has literally given his life for the school., This, many of the students take for granted. We would not realize the extent of his work unless it were to stop. This is the man responsible for our wonderful environ- ment of learning, of fellowship, and of opportunity. He is Mr. Glenn, the man that directs Smithfield High School. MRS. C. W. TARLTON, Secretary Any administrative enterprise re- quires the diligent work of a secre- tary. Mrs. Tarlton is an invaluable asset in Mr. Glenn ' s administrative duties. MRS. JOHN T. MASSEY Able to help in many ways, Mrs. Massey is always on the job. 5 MRS. RUTH BURNETTE B.S. BROWNING B.M. University of North Carolina at Greensboro Glee Club We Came, We Saw, Left: In November seniors swarmed the libraries to acquire information for research papers which they had to write. . Here Mrs. Glenn, senior English teacher, gives constructive criticism to Carolyn Hartley. Right: Mrs. Wilkins and her junior English students enjoyed diagramming challenging sentences. Left: Always ready to help her math stu- dents with problems, Mrs. Boyette explains a rugged one to Dick Prevette, Skip Jones, and Ernest Whitley. We Learned . . . Right: Hard at work, Mrs. Peele prepares another French poem for her students. Such poems and writings about France developed a taste for French culture. Left: Mr. Brown and several of his geography students pose before a world map. It looks as if he ' s found a rather interesting spot somewhere in India. Right: Students of a sophomore world his- tory class prepare to be-head a helpless nobleman, just as in the days of France ' s Reign of Terror. Miss Turner, a new edi- tion to the high school faculty, makes sure that the first blow will be on target. Left: Mr. Wiggs had a lot of questions to answer as freshman general science stu- dents went to the lab for the first time. The laboratory is used by all the science courses for helpful and interesting experimentation. Right: A cubbyhole of an art room is the environment that inspires the SHS artists. The walls are always covered with originals and the room could pass as an art museum. DAN REID ALLEN Music Club 1, President 2; J.V. Basketball 1; J.V. The challenge of building pano- ramic scenery, perfecting an entertaining program, and living up to the demands of the seniors was too great for us. But little did they realize that challenge was the magic word, that challenge was the one force that would produce success. We all worked. We all played. And we enjoyed doing both. The result? Well, you can see from these pages that everything turned out Oklahoma O.K. ! Mary Lillie Talton proclaims to the world that you can ' t get a man with a gun, especially when the gun is aimed backwards over your shoulder. These five hombres sing of their predicament in the Oklahoma Jail, are they doing out front ! 54 but what OKLAHOMA O.K.! These little doggies, trained by Mrs. Lizzie Walker Wells, waggled onto the stage and into the hearts of the seniors. 55 FRESHMEN HAVE THEIR MOMENT The eve of October 10, 1964, brought the new year ' s high school class together for the first time. Everyone then realized that school- days were here again. The Class of ' 68 was officially welcomed at the gym with the traditional green theme: green bows for the freshmen ladies and green boutonnieres for the freshmen gentlemen. The seniors got their first taste of responsibility as upper classmen, and responded with true entertainment. How surprised we were to find that those high and mighty seniors aren ' t so almighty after all, but actually have a curious envy and respect for those little green freshmen. Mommy, I can ' t breathe! Anna Ratcliffe mimics contemporary tele- vision commercials. MUSICAL COMEDY GIGANTIC SUCCESS On Friday night, November 18, 1964, an amazed audience witnessed an outstanding production on the Smithfield High School stage. A cast of seventy juniors and seniors reproduced the Broadway hit musical, Annie Get Your Gun, and the amateur performance became the talk of the town. Never before had so many enjoyed a high school play so much. Success through hard work is surely an outstanding quality of Smith- field High. Annie Get Your Gun was just further proof. Homecoming ' 64 Wednesday ' s chapel, with the choos- ing of the court, Ht the fuse which was to explode in an outburst of happy spirits and renewed confidence that Smithfield would triumph over Benson. Thursday night we went to the Recrea- tion Park where, standing around a blaz- ing fire, everyone was given a chance to shout at the top of his lungs, and most everyone did ! Friday night revealed once again that Smithfield is Tops as we rolled to a 38-7 victory over the Phantoms. The dance Saturday night proved to be the end of a perfect Homecoming, as every- one danced to his heart ' s content. Since Mr. Lee Rogers began to build the band at Smithfield over a decade ago, the music department has grown amazingly. For this school year the county purchased an old house across the street from the school campus solely to accommodate the expanding band organization. Op- portunities for high schoolers now include the senior band, the dance band, and a pep band which plays at basketball games on occasion. Highlights of ' 64- ' 65 included a weekend in Sanford at a tri-county band festival, and a day in New Bern for the Shriner ' s Parade. Of course there were the traditional concerts and chapel programs, too. But band members got their most enjoyment during fourth period — when they found adventures in compositions that never reached the public ' s ears but thrilled the participating musician as he produced sounds: his own sounds. RUTH BURNETTE Advisor There are two items that students of Smithfield High receive periodically in their homerooms after sixth period. One is the dreaded report card and the other is The Smithfield High Times. The High Times is the school news- paper, reflecting the life and thought of the students because its articles are, written by the students themselves. So we have a democratic school paper; but who are the ones responsible for its organization? The editor, her staff, the faculty advisor, and the Journalism Club head the list. Although the High Times, when printed, hardly resembles the conven- tional newspaper, the quality of its contents has brought praise from many readers. Just as The New York Times keeps the people informed about im- portant world affairs, The Smithfield High Times keeps the students in- formed about important school affairs. JUDY CORBETT Editor We love our editor seems to be the sentiment of the High Times staff. It rained continuously for four days and nights, and turned the area into an American Venice. For the first time in the history of Smithfield High School, classes were dismissed because of threaten- ing high water along the rural bus routes. By the week ' s end, there was water water everywhere! We all got out our waterproof apparel and played in the water as if it were snow . . . Below: Jeeps can go anywhere. Charlie Mercer, N.C. Teen-Democratic Club President, had the honor of riding the Lady Bird Special from Wilson to Selma. Here he leaves the train after talking with Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Lyndon Baines Johnson, wife of the Presi- dent of the United States, thrilled Johnstonians on October 6, 1964 when she and her elder daughter, Lynda Bird, came to Selma as part of a whistle stop tour of the South. The train, called the Lady Bird Special, was the First Lady ' s part in 1964 Presi- dential campaign which resulted in President John- son ' s re-election. The glamour that accompanied the visit of the political celebrities was an eyeful for people of this area, especially for the teen-agers! The Secret Service in action, the radio, TV, press personnel from all the big networks and magazines, and the spirit of the crowd transformed a quiet spot in Johnston County into a focal point of the nation . . . Debra Lawson, Kathy Hildebrand, and Ann Jones were just three of the many local Teen-Dem members who par- ticipated in the gala welcoming festivities. 1 Hark! The Sound of Cheering Voices! RUGGED DEVILS BRING WOE TO FOES The 1964 chapter of Smithfield High School football is another cheerful-read- ing story. Relying on good, hard-nosed football, these gridiron men won seven games, tied one, and lost two to top teams in the tough Capital Area Con- ference. Defense became frequently used in conversation about the Red Devils around -town. But to this rugged de- fense the Devils added a very strong running attack that could literally run •the opposition into the ground . . . 78 George Faulk Charlie Whitley CO-CAPTAINS Senior Squad Members Devil Defense: Suppressive, Impressive Smithfield linemen Ralph Hall and Alfred Moore take a breather from their dirty work. Because Gary and Garner were all-powerful again, although we did beat Cary in the second game of the season. Our goal this year was high: State Champs! But disappointment was riding with us. The season was highlighted by the outstanding performance of John Gleason, the cindermen ' s high-jumping specialist. Mr. Payne participated vigorously in the school athletic program during his first year at Smithfield High. The energetic coach found pleasure and pride in pitching batting practice daily, and his arm never failed him once. Blue skies and mild temperatures put baseball into the athletic limelight. Smithfield ' s 1964 squad enjoyed playing ball and played well, although its record was 6-4, far from spectacular. However, the Devil batsmen were always in the game and further glorified the Smithfield tradition of Never give up!
