SHIELD John Allen Volume X Co- Editors Kenneth Woodard Smithfield High School Smithfield, North Carolina Published by- Paragon Press -: 1959 when we as individuals grew with both our com- munity and school. We y :r T remember that year, not ; M ; only for its growth and prog- ress, but as a busy year, full of V : ■ activities: Monday mornings full of hellos, lengthy cafeteria lines, laugh- ter, simple courtesies, and tears ... 1959, the year of the Big Snow and the long unexpected Christmas vacation; the year of our Homecoming Mardi Gras celebra- tion; the year the juniors introduced us to that fascinating character Harvey ; the year the sen- iors waited patiently with empty fingers for the long lost class rings; the final football game with Roxboro; and College Entrance Exams. . . . We remember those bewil- dered freshmen as they stepped to take their places in our school plus the sales-minded sophomores, enthusiastic in their ■ ' , annual magazine campaign; the competent juniors maturing and eager to do their part; and the seniors at the top of the ladder looking down with memories and regrets. We remember the to- getherness between a tireless faculty and the student body pul- sating with dreams and ambitions ... MELVIN ETHERIDGE ANDERSON They say the good die young. Boy! Miss Bingley of true English snob- bery, played by Betty McGowan (left); Jane Bennet, the naive and unsuspecting sister, played by Gail Ogburn; Mrs. Gardiner, Jane ' s Aunt, played by Anesha Johnson. Officers of fhe Girls ' and Boys ' Glee Clubs, Margaret Rackley, Genevieve Johnson, Clyda Lynn Boye+te, Patty Hilderbrand, Emily Faullt, Staton Boy- ette, Jerry Barefoot, Adalia Wiggs, and Wade Hamilton, meet jointly for a recording session. Listening to a big-name glee club perform the same numbers that they have been working on gives them many valuable pointers. Glee Club They said it couldn ' t be done! The Smithfield High School Glee Clubs did it though. Both the Freshman Girls ' Club and the High School Girls ' Chorus received superior ratings in the state nnusic contest in the spring. The Mixed Chorus received an excellent rating. Through the years the glee clubs have been attending the State Music Contests, and both excellent and superior rat ' rngs have been received. Under the competent leadership of Miss Flora Parker, the glee clubs have steadily Improved and grown until we now boast of more than a hundred members. 1959 can again be remembered as an exceptional year in the glee club history. Glee Club accompanists, Margaret Lee Austin, Kathy Lassiter, Nancy Lassiter, Bonnie Creech, and Kay Boy- ette, listen as Emily Faulk plays through a prospective number for the club. Does it meet your approval, girls? Mr. Rogers pauses to give band mem- bers the Christmas program line up and informs them of the date. Band is certainly one of the most enjoyable facets of the Smithfield High School curriculum. The band, composed of students, ranging in age from thirteen to eighteen, presents musical challenges to Smithfield band students. Organized in 1 950, with its director Mr. Rogers coming in 1951, the band has performed in local concerts as well as in State Contests. rv 1 Since that time the band has developed rapidly and has made great progress. For the past two years the band has performed music in the grade V category and has gained superior ratings in the district contests. In 1957 the organization also brought home a superior rating in the All- State Contest. The most recent honor was the superior rating awarded in the District Contest held in Raleigh on March 14, 1959. The band officers look over scores from the vast storehouse of music v hich the band has excuted and ac- cumulated through the years. Judy Coats (chief), Mary Ann Honeycu+t, Jackie Bridges, Sylvia Nichols, Mary Helen Ragsdale, Susan Johnson. HIGH TIMES STAFF Sports With Jack and Thel. That ' s the sports column in the High Times. Sports editors, Jack Upton and Thel Hooks, gather tor a conference to check over the score books before commencing work on the next column. Shall it be a clever cartoon or a serious modern sketch for the cover of the High Times? Art editor, Barbara McGee, attempts to give the news editors, Clyda Lynn Boyette and Ann Rogers Morgan, an idea of what that next cover will look like. Students witnessed a great innprovennent in the High Times this year. Dispensing with a number of the traditional but trite columns and replacing them with fresh, new ideas, the editorial staff enjoyed a successful and progressive year. By publishin g many of the students ' worthy poems, themes, and essays, a new look and flavor was acquired for the High Times. Making an outline for the next edition are Diana Bess Montgomery, assistant editor; Miss Christine Wooten, advisor, and Nancy Lassiter, editor-in-chief. This Is the tenth edition of The Shield. 1959 marks the end of a decade of progress at Smithfield High. FOOTBALL 1958 The l958- ' 59 football season found the Red Devils placed in the new South Central Class AA Conference. The team went through the regular season schedule undefeated, winning the first cham- pionship of the new conference. Competing for the District III title and a berth in the state playoffs, the Smithfield Red Devils lost to the Roxboro Rockets by a score of 20-18. The Red Devils had gone through 18 consecutive contests undefeated over two seasons until their loss in the playoff game with Roxboro. Counting the Roxboro loss, Smithfield hHigh gridiron teams have dropped only three games while winning 24 and tying one In the 28 contests over the past three seasons. Coach Roy J. Brown has now completed his tenth season at the helm of the Smithfield football team, hlis squads, through the years, have won 51, lost 41, and tied three. The past three seasons have been his best, and the record is most impressive. Coach Jack Temple has done an excellent job in providing the future varsity stars with training and experience through the JV program. He has also served as scout for the Smithfield team in games of their opponents, and the information in his scouting reports have proved valuable to the varsity eleven. The victory against Wake Forest and highlight of the entire season was the first tournament victory in four years. The 1958-59 Red Devil Boys ' Basketball Team had another outstanding season, compiling a total of 25 victories against only two defeats. Lacking height was made up for by a will to win, speed, and shooting accuracy. In the conference race the Devils had an un- blemished record of 14 wins and no defeats. Go- ing into the tournament the team won the first round, defeating Wake Forest, to automatically qualify them for the elimination play-off tourna- ment at Hillsboro. Winning the next two games gave the Devils the tournament championship. At Hillsboro the team defeated a tall hlender- son quint. In the second game the Devils took an easy victory over Fuquay. In the championship game in the state AA Tournament, the Red Dev- ils were defeated by a strong Southern Durham team. This good brand of playing for the past few seasons has caused basketball to become a popu- lar sport in our school.
