CLASS HISTORY We, the senior class of ] 952, are proud to hove taken part in the symphony that is Smithfield High School. If we but close our eyes and reminisce for a moment we con recall the first movement of this wonderful symphony. How thrilled and honored we were to be taking part in so great a performance! We were directed and guided so that all confusion and discord might be eliminated in favor of a blending harmony. With individual core, the adroit hands of our conductor, Mr. Glenn, deftly directed each of US; thus our freshman year was spent in working and in learning. As sophomores, we felt that our store of knowledge had been greatly enriched and increased. We were filled with boundless energy and the desire to give an unequalled performance. It was with this spirit that we undertook the maga- zine campaign and the World Peace Oratorical Contest. Perhaps it was also this spirit and our enthusiasm that helped our boys to gain a much-hoped-for victory over Selma on the gridiron and a county championship trophy on the basketball court. It was also during this year that several of our classmates were given the honor of attending the Junior-Senior Banquet as waiters and waitresses. And so, the second movement of our symphony was one of much activity and accomplishment. It was not until the third movement, however, that we truly began to realize our responsibilities. In our junior year we proved ourselves capable and versatile as we were hosts at the Junior-Senior Circus and dramoteers in Seventeenth Summer. We worked many long hours to bring these two events to perfection and success. And even as we worked, more than a few hearts felt a tinge of regret ... for time was passing quickly. As seniors we have taken part, for the last time, in athletics, the production of the High Ti mes, The Shield, in chapel programs, and the ploy. Again we have defeated our traditional rival in football. And now, our symphony can no longer be prolonged. We are on the last few measures of the fourth and final movement. Our hearts are filled with a sweet sadness accompanied by cherished memories as we move on toward the inevitable finale. Soon our beloved conductor will direct us for the last time and, quickly as an echo, another symphony will follow ours. It has been said that music, once admitted to the soul, becomes a sort of spirit, and never dies. It wanders peturbed- ly through the halls and galleries of the memory, and is often heard again, distinct and living, as when it first displaced the wavelets of the air . . . May we be so remembered. • — 0 n-- — : —
