The HAM ' 69 Smithfield, Virginia Smithfield High School Volume XXI . Table of Contents Administration 6 Seniors 18 Underclassmen 42 Student Life 60 Organizations 70 Sports 104 Activities 134 Ads 148 Editor — Susan Gilliam Assistant Editor — Beth Winslow Business Manager — Hill Cox Smithfield High School is com- posed of many people today. These students and teachers with their shared memories and experiences are the thread of our theme. Just as a mirror reflects an image, so our HAM is the pulse and the lifeblood of our student body. It is to these people, those who have been here, you who are here now, and those who are yet to come upon which the ’69 HAM is based. 3 These people are the spokes in the wheel of life at Smithfield High School. 4 These people create the life of Smithfield High School . . . they are the life of Smithfield High School. THESE PEOPLE ARE YOU. 5 Administration People .... teaching, lecturing, counseling . . . deciding the punishment .... enforcing the rules .... signing corridor passes, erasing black- boards .... coaching the teams, counseling the bewildered .... distributing forms, collecting money .... holding class meetings .... mimeo- graphing tests, grading papers, agonizing over grades .... making us tomorrow’s leaders. Gwaltney W. White, Jr., J. Edward Hall, Charles T. Darden, Mr. Jackson E. Reasor, Mr. J. G. Reveley, Jr., Rufus H. Darden. School Board MR. JACKSON E. REASOR ; Division Superintendent 8 As a four year principal at SHS, Mr. Richard Saunders has worked zealously with the student body. By working long hours both day and night, he has made this school one of which we can all be proud. Mr. Saunders graduated from Caroline County High School, received B.A. degree from Ran- dolph Macon College, and his Master of Educa- tion degree from the College of William and Mary. After he served as a teacher and coach in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Saunders moved to Smithfield where he served as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal before becoming principal of Smithfield High School. The Senior Class expresses its sincerest appre- ciation for Mr. Saunders’ tireless efforts in leading us at SHS. Entering his third year as assistant principal, Mr. Charles England assumed his duties and worked hard to make a good year. Mr. England attended East Tennessee State University where he received his B.S. degree. He came to us from Jonesville High School, Jones- ville, Virginia. Along with his duties as assistant principal, Mr. England has coached the Varsity football team with J.V. boys’ basketball team. He was a co-sponsor of the Varsity Club. As a real friend to the entire Student body, the Senior Class expresses its appreciation to Mr. England for his active interest in the welfare of our school and its students. 9 Assuming her duties as our school secretary, Mrs. Sara Cox proved indispensable in the effi- cient running of school business. Each day she was faced with working office machines, typing letters and forms, or making announcements. A graduate of Kee’s Costal Business College, Mrs. Cox serves as secretary to the principal, general purpose clerk to the entire school body, and bookkeeper. As a real aid to the whole school, many thanks go to Mrs. Sara Cox for her consideration and co-operation. “Do you think I can get into college?” “Are College Boards really that hard?” These and many other questions were faced by our guidance counselor, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Rowell, who spent many hours in advising and counseling students this year. Throughout the year she has been an invalu- able aid to all those with academic or personal problems. 10 Senior Sponsors MRS. LOUISE CALDWELL B.S. Longwood College Government, U. S. Keeping in the spirit of the 1968 presidential election, SHS held its own mock elections. Approximately 450 Packers registered a week ahead of the November 1 election. Not only did the Packers vote for President and Vice President but also for their congressional representative and the $81 ,000,000 educational referendum. The results? The majority ruled in favor of Wallace for President, Watkins Abbitt for Congressional representative and in favor of the educational referendum. Bobby contemplates as to who will get his lucky vote. Mrs. Caldwell’s classroom gets wallpapered in campaign literature. 62 Juniors Receive Classrings A Balfour representative took class ring orders. “Mine’s aquamarine, size 7!” “Did you get a crest?” Excited Juniors showed pride after receiving their class rings in December (just in time for Christmas). Having waited almost two months, the Juniors proudly displayed the coming of a new decade with a new Senior class, for engraved on their rings was - Packers, 1970! An atmosphere of excited confusion. 63 SCA Elections Walls at SHS were covered in signs made by busy campaign- Voters line up to cast their ballot, ers. After a competitive week of campaigning, the S.C.A. elections were held last March 29, 1968. The school’s hallways were covered with campaign signs and posters, and the whole student body was alive with excitement. Four boy candidates triumphed over their girl opponents, asserting male supremacy at SHS. The new S.C.A. officers were Stephen Edwards, President; Danny Smith, Vice President; Joe Gale, Secretary ; and Charles Edwards, Treasurer. 64 “All Around School” Winners of the FHA initiations. 65 School Spirit There’s a mouse on the floor! The Pep Rallies this past year at SHS were a mass of yelling students and waving arms. School Spirit surmounted all previous years. The separate classes strained their vocal chords to compete for the Spirit Stick, an honor given to the class displaying the most school spirit. SHS sincerely thanks the cheerleaders for promoting such enthusiastic spirit this past year. 66 “Dixie” “Stand up and shout - we are the Mighty Packers!” Pep Rallies The Junior Class was just one of the many classes to win the Spirit Stick. 67 Senior Class displays School Spirit in Pep Rallies. Assemblies Now, hereeeeeee’s Dicky! One of the SCA council ' s main functions was to hold monthly assemblies. Jean Doggett, a senior member, was the program chairman. Assemblies have ranged from a concert by the Continental Army Bank to a fashion show by the Home Economics Department. Several clubs sponsored these assembly programs. Beth Winslow was awarded the DAR Award by Mr. Saunders. Carol Cundiff was awarded the Betty Crocker Homemaker’s Award by Mr. Saunders. 68 “All Around School” Monday morning blahs. 69 V I People .... acting in plays .... filling boxes of food . . . selling, selling, selling to raise money .... taking pictures, writing copy, put- ting a year on paper .... holding mock elec- tions .... showing movies, checking out books .... striving to make society a little bit better. Student Cooperative Association The Student Cooperative Association worked hard during the year to promote school spirit and citizenship. The members present the assembly and morning devotions. They sponsored the one-act plays and the entrants to the forensic meet. They also assisted the elementary teachers in the instruction of physical education. The S.C.A. published the literary magazine for the second year. PRESIDENT, Steven Edwards. FIRST ROW: Danny Smith, Laurie Anderson, Cathy Barlow, Jean Doggett, Wayne Logan, Bob Oliver. What an ironic comparison!! The club sponsored the annual “Beta Capers” in November which proved a great success. They deco- rated the doors in the high school at Christmas, and in March the Beta members and their sponsor attended the State Beta Convention in Richmond. Under the leadership of Mrs. Louise Caldwell, the Club promoted projects as a means of service to others. How about a Hawaiian Punch? Members are selected from Juniors and Seniors who have achieved academic excellence and have shown outstanding leadership abilities. To be chosen for membership a student must maintain a “B” average in academics and meet the approval of the faculty and Beta members. Jean, we’ve got to stop meeting like this! 79 The requirements for membership make the Quill and Scroll an international honor organiza- tion. Members are selected from the Junior and Senior classes who have shown an outstanding ability in the field of journalism and who rank in the upper one-third of their classes. Proceeds from the selling of Halloween candy went towards a hundred dollar scholarship for a deserving Senior. They’re built efficiently and well only by men whose skills and knowledge are broad. That ' s why Newport News begins at the beginning with its own selective Apprentice School. High School graduates enter on the basis of academic record. But selectivity doesn’t stop there. In classroom and shop, in the drafting room and out in the yard, each man’s special abilities are watched and developed. Some become skilled and versatile ma- chinists. Others become expert electricians or precision tool makers. Many becomesuper- visors. Some earn scholarships for advanced training at colleges and technical schools. We think the School’s a pretty inspiring place, because its end results are good men and good ships. AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Xewport KTews Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Newport News.
