Introduction The Senior Class of Smithfield High School presents the theme of the 1965 Annual, Through the Years, in an effort to preserve the past heritage of our community and to provide inspiration for future endeavor. Students rapidly go through four years of academic and social preparation without adequate consideration for our local historical landmarks. Perhaps our very heritage prevents us from lingering on our past glories and instills a desire to surpass the ' achievements of our ancestors. Glory, however,' must never be forgotten, but em- ployed as inspiration for the accomplishment of goals, Through the years of high school we have strived diligently to develop mentally, socially, and morally in a manner of which our forefathers would be proud. We, the graduating class, bequeath the contents of our yearbook to all successive classes with the hope that it will add to the heritage of Smithfield High School. l 3 Administration 5 Seniors 13 Underclassmen 29 Academics 41 Organizations 49 Athletics 73 Activities 91 Advertisers 105 Table of Contents wx.. .fa ' ff N, - ,. Clayton, Sponsor, Iny Chapman, Assistant Editor. The Annual Staff has labored industriously to produce a yearbook which will promote pleasant memories as Through the Years the graduates recall the school days at their alma mater. The capable staff under the leadership of Mrs. Jean Clayton, has surmounted many obstacles including the loss of our elected editor, Linda Wells. The ability of the new editor and assistant editor has been reflected in the capable manner in which they proceeded in spite of difficulties. Meeting the deadlines and getting the multiples ready for the publishers were the most vexing tasks, but the staff saw the final culmination of their ambitious and tedious hours of planning and effort. Earning enough money to publish the yearbook was accomplished by the business staff . Besides annual sub- scriptions and soliciting advertisements, they sponsored a carwash, bake sale, basketball dance, pop bottle collection, and paper drive. The staff's able photographer captured the year's events in a form that will provide an inspiration for memories The Annual Staff hopes that students and teachers will find a complete and interesting chronicle of their life at Smithfield High School during the past year. To be chosen for member- ship a student must maintain a B average in academics and meet the approval of the faculty and present Beta mem bers. The club sponsors the first football dance and each month UNO members of the club present the assembly program. In November The Beta Capers are presented to finance a 5100 scholarship presented to a worthy senior and send the members to the Beta Convention which is held alternately at Richmond and Roanoke. As its main endeavor for this year the Beta Club introduced the Smithfield Scholastic Letter to be awarded to students who maintain at least a B average in five subjects for the first five, six weeks of the year. Final decision was made by the teachers and the letters were awarded at tap- ping ceremonies in May. Funds for purchasing the letters were provided by the P. T. A. The Beta Club hopes this will provide an incentive for better academic achievement as well as recognize worthy students. The Club and its sponsor, Mrs. Charlotte Gale, strive diligently achieving goals to distinguish one of the smallest clubs in the state. Under the sponsor- ship of Mr. Ben Rich the varsity boys have an occasional recreational activity and leave a useful gift to the school at the end of each year. 63 Latin Club -5...-v SEATED: Mrs. Martha Gwaltney, Sponsor, Carolyn Joyner, President, Susan Mumford, Vice President. S'l ANDING: Susan Moffitt, Secre- tary, Nancy Clarke, Treasurer. The members have an opportunity to enjoy Latin and to develop more extensive learning of the subject. The club met monthly this year and the members presented programs about Ro- man history, traditions, and mythol- ogy. ln February the Latin Club held its annual initiation of new members, a festive occasion when they dressed as gods and goddesses of Roman mythol- ogy. The high-light of the year was a banquet given in the true Roman style. The Latin Club, under the leadership of Mrs. Martha Gwaltney, strives to preserve an interest in the classics and to prove that Latin is never a dead language. 17 SEATED: Cindy Gauldin, Shirley Edwards , Barbara Alice Barlow, Billy Everett. The loss of ten letter- men from the previous championship year did not dampen the team's spirit which proved outstanding again this year. Coach Rich and assistants Duell, King, and Roy put the Packers through strenuous workouts and after days of drills and practices the Packers were in excellent condition. Featured games were with Northampton and Group 1-A Suffolk, both arch-rivals. The Packers defeated Northampton in a tough battle, 19-7. Although a Group -1A school, the Red Raiders proved to be no trouble for the mighty Packers who won 20-O. 5 M. L. King, Assistant Coach ' p -o v , B. C.
