VIRGINIA The Annual Staff of l963 has chosen as the theme for the 'yearbook The Old and the New. Our new high school building and gymnasium, of which we are so proud, lent themselves readily to this theme. We have strived to maintain this theme throughtout and it is our hope that this yearbook will serve as a depository for fond remembrances of which this year's graduating class is so mindful. Of course there are many past experiences which it would be impossible to capture on the pages of our yearbook. It might be well to take time now to enumerate just a few of these to create the proper atmosphere for the following pages. The first days of school and all the scared little children who are now our dearest friends, the kindly, patient teachers who prodded us along the paths of learning, the first day of high school, the first time we participated in a varsity sport, the basketball dances, the Sweetheart Balls, the junior -Senior Proms, the wonderful sum- mers interspersed with the school yearsg certainly, almost all of the pre-' ceding are experiences shared in common by everyone and will not be soon forgotten. Unfortunately, the HAM can only cover highlights of the pre- ceding year. This being the case, the staff can only hope that this yearbook will serve to help recall experiences of the preceding year for generations to come. The class of '63 leaves its fellow students reluctantlyg however, it leaves undaunted and looks forward to an eventful and productive future . 2 - 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY 4 SEIIIICRS ......... . Spinks, the Band and Chorus Director. Its purpose is to further the interest of music and music education throughout the school and community, and to bring the Band and Chorus organizations closer together. The members must have a letter in Band or Chorus, an over -all C average which must be maintained, they must show an ability and attitude toward music, they must be in the tenth grade or above, and are voted in by the present members at the end of each school year. The club started with nineteen charter members. A social meeting once a month was held, at which a speaker or special music was the featured presentation. The club members plan to sponsor touring concerts or other music events in the community in months to come, and to sponsor money -raising projects of the Band and Chorus needs, also to work in the community to promote the two organizations. Although the club was a new one, just getting on its feet, it promises to be an interesting and rewarding one for those students interested in music. 62 STUDENT COUNCIL Al,,,g,,, p ' it LF' . From then to the last game with Gloucester, the players worked long hours to condition themselves both physically and mentally, in the sport known as Football. L. D. Joyner, the assist- ant Coach and an ex-Packer, combined coaching efforts with Coach Rich, leading the Packer team to a 5-4 record, giving them a winning season. Outstanding in the work on the playing field were Stanley Clark, Robert Darden, Dickie Sawyer, Buddy Wyatt Gordon Nelson, Harry Underwood, and Pete Mingin. It is the desire of many girls in school to one day be a varsity cheerleader. The girls who really want this job start early as jimior Varsity Cheerleaders . These girls, just like the supporters of the varsity team, cheer at all j.V. games. They are also organized like the Varsity squad, having two co- captains 'and rules that govern their behavior and attendance at games at which they cheer. It is from the ranks of the j'.V. squad that S.H. S. gains spirit for the j'Lu1ior Varsity games and the varsity cheerleading squads of the years to come. Much credit goes to these girls and the spirit they help to build when they make their appearances at the games. Cheer up, Betty. The Smithfield High School Band marched smartly onto the field at the first football game of the year, entertaining the crowds, encouraging the team, and adding to the general excitement of the first game. Besides playing for eight other games the band marched in the Peanut Bowl Parade, the Oyster Bowl Parade, and, of course, Smith- field's own homecoming. A new addition this year was the pep band, consisting of a few members from each section, that played for all pep rallies. In December both traditional and contemporary music was combined for a beautiful Christmas Concert. In March the band participated in the District Band Festival and the Solo and Ensemble Festival, and was very proud that two of its members, Barbara Warren and Frank Fulgham, made All State Band. After marching in the Azalea Festival parade the band ended the year with its spring concert. As is customary the senior members were recognized, most of them having been in the band for seven or eight years. All derived lasting enjoyment from this important part of their school years, The Smith- field High School Band. 101 CHORUS FRONT ROW: M. Sawyerg I. Hemmisg F. Hodgesg J. Edwards: I.
