It has been at the center of nearly all our activities, our good times, our work and our accomplishments. It has given us the training, experience, and confidence we need to go out and find our rightful places in the world. When we speak of our school we speak not only of a building, but of the spirit that prevails in it, and of our principal, teachers, and classmates. In this Annual we have tried to recreate, at least in part, the warmth, the friendliness, and the spirit of our Alma Mater, and since it would be impossible to single out one person or element to bestow our appreciation upon, we herein dedicate our year book to . . . 2 , . . . ' ZfC tovf It seems such a short while since we, the Class of 57’, were happily making the rounds of slides, see-saws, and merry-go-rounds, then trudging home after school with skinned knees, muddy shoes, and torn sashes. Those first years of Dick and Jane and simple arithmetic flew by, and soon we found ourselves high in the elementary grades, and looking up to the high-school students with worshipful eyes. The wonderful September day finally arrived when we became full-fledged Freshmen. We must have looked awkward and completely lost, but we were much too proud to notice thatl The year was filled with Latin, Alge- bra, and lots of fun. As sophomores we looked haughtily down at the Freshmen, and wondered if we could possibly have been so noisy and silly. Our Junior year ushered in excited plans for the Prom, and frantic last minute preparations to get things ready. We think we succeeded in creating the perfect Evening in Paris. Then , at last, it was our turn to take over the coveted role of Seniors. This has been the busiest year of all, filled with much planning for term papers. Senior plays, the long awaited Washington trip, and finally graduation. Though we’ve done our share of complaining about book reports, what we term excessive homework, and those inevitable detention hall slips, we look back upon these last twelve years with fondest memories, which time can never erase. To those who walk the halls of Smithfield after us, we say, uphold her standards with loyalty, pride, and honor. 8 Se tc i Alice Faye Bryant Carolyn Rose Chapman Maurice Langhome Burnett 9 Se tto% Anne Clontz Margaret Lee Crook George Herbert Dillon 10 11 12 13 14 15 Se Uo% 16 Settavui Margarette Rose Powell Raymond Edward Oliver Dorothy Jane Powell 17 SenionA Glenn Stanley Scott Robert Pendleton Smith Jeanette Minton Sene 18 Senton 9 19 20 Se u i4 Benjamin Franklin Edwards (?ta4A Sfr t yu Mrs. Dorothy Robbins Mrs. Martha Gwaltney 21 BEST ALL AROUND Jimmie Duell Dolly Murphy Langhome Burnett WITTIEST Jeanette Sene Willie Gay Se Uo MOST SCHOOL SPIRITED Carol Gwaltney Langhome Burnett Dolly Murphy BIGGEST FLIRTS Mary Anne Turner Wayne Barlow Jackie Hall MOST STUDIOUS Patricia Vellines Charles Edwards 22 MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Joe Luter, Evelyn Bateman FRIENDLIEST Arelene Draughn, Dickie Dillon ' Z ' . 7. The literary minded enjoy working on the staffs of our two publications, THE HAM and THE PIG ' S TALE. Outstanding staff members are invited to join the QUILL and SCROLL, a national society for high school journalists. The S.C.A. is composed of representatives from each class, and the BETA CLUB each year invites students with high scholastic records to join its ranks. Foreign language students join the LATIN and SPANISH clubs, while athletes and cheerleaders who earn their letters make up the VARSITY and MONOGRAM clubs. FFA and FHA train future farmers and homemakers. Two of our newest organizations are the DE and DO clubs, which give invaluable back- ground for meeting job requirements. Join in, you will find a club to meet your interest. z tct ScnoiC SEATED: Emily Sykes; Mrs. Dorothy Robbins, Sponsor; Bessie Brown; Carol Gwaltney. Through untiring effort, Mr. Frank Mesite, our director, has worked to give us sound training in our musical endeavors, and above all to help us attain a love and appreciation for good music. From the band has sprung an organized dance band, and a girls’ quartet has also been formed. We look upon these groups with equal pride. As we view our active music department, giving frequent concerts and programs, and as we hear each day the familiar sound of instru- ments and voices, we know that the efforts of Mr. Mesite and his stu- dents have been rewarding ones. 45 StPuttyie C ' rtyty i ScAooC ScutcC CLARINETS: Sylvia Clontz, Sec.
