M arellc Gwaltney HISTORY OF SENIOR CLASS OF '48 'Twas many and many a year ago, in 1936, that the class of '48 began. It was an important clay in September when we were separated like little lambsg some led meekly across the hall to Miss Drew's room and others taken into Miss l'rosise's fold. As we learned to read our little Peter and Peggy stories, the shy- ness left us and we could be as noisy as anyone. Miss Maynard soon converted this excess into music by forming a kiddie orchestra. The days and years passed until we lined up across the auditorium one May morning as graduates from grammar school. . Remember the next year in the eighth grade when Miss Gritiin 'taught us A Midsummer Nightls Dream and part of the class got lost on Mr. Shusti-r's nature trip? We entered high school in 1944 with Mrs. Francis Cox as our home room teacher and Sarah Ann 'Harlow as class president. That grown-up feeling came as we freshmen got schedules straight and were initiated into the F.F.A., F.H.A., or Latin Club. 4 As sophomores, Mr. Batten began as our home room teacher and Mr. Green- wood tinished the job with Catherine Bunch as -our president. lt was this year that our Alma Mater operated under the leadership of a new principal, Mr. Bruce. Remember that chilly October night we bundled up for the hayride and wienie roast or that rainy day Mr. Kirchmier took the biology class to the experiment station in an army truck? Soon we were juniors and with this rank came greater responsibilities. To help us with these, we had 'Miss Hunnicutt as our 'teacher and elected George Richardson president. VVhat a thrill the day our class rings came, we were prouder than if they were diamonds! At the first football game for S. H. S. we yelled and sang our Alma Mater which our class had introduced in assembly. We began raising money for the Junior-Senior Prom, sponsoring a ministrel show and opening a school supply store. Working like beavers, we prepared for the prom, engaging the band, fixing eats, hanging yards of crepe paper, and arrang- ing fragrant pine boughs. january tenth had come and the lassies in swinging skirts with their tuck-clad escorts promenaded up the canopied walklto their Dream Ball-the Club Sensation of '48. Indeed our junior year was full of activity. Besides bowling and skating parties, we went on educational toursg to Williamsburg to the Comedy of Errors and 'to court to a murder trial. Remem- ber that May night'-'we had a moonlight excursion-with no moonlight? Who wants to remember our two one-act plays when some performers forgot their lines? Then came June and we decorated for graduation exercises, realizing our time would be next. At last came the climaxnwe reached the status of dignified seniors. Mrs. Gwaltney was our senior teacher and Anne Brown was chosen class president. ln the fall of '47 the senior girls, with Mr. Hooker, held their own against the senior boys in a lively soccer game. As interest in sports grew, a greater number from our class became important members of the athletic teams. Our work and worry over the senior plav proved worthwhile when on the big night, December 12th, Mama's Baby Boy made a big hit. We learned what work and responsi- bility were too, as we planned and produced our annual, the stiff-bound 1948 HAM. In March, the juniors entertained us at their formal prom and later in the spring came the unforgettable trip to Washington. All too soon, final exams were over, the books were closed, and we marched forth into the wide, wide world. june seventh had arrived. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY One fall day, the enchanting hues of the Autumn foliage on the stately trees aroused my longing for a stroll in the forest. I had taken such walks before, but somehow I had the subconscious feeling of the unexpected occurring. I wandered farther and farther, until I reached an unfamiliar part of the forest. Suddently, my foot slipped and l began to fall into what seemed to be an endless darkness. Down, down, down, I went, and then my fall reached an abrupt end. I looked around but could see nothing because of the hopeless dark- ness which surrounded me. I sat paralyzed with fear. As my eyes' grew accustomed to the blackness, I perceived a dim light and wondered where it came from. I stumbled to my feet and groping along the narrow passageway tried to hurry toward the fast brightening light. At last I reached the end of the narrow caveway and steppeil into a broafl space resembl- ing a circular room, in the midst of which stood a gleaming golden lamp. In amazement, I stepped forward with curiosity to touch it. Instantly a puff of smoke arose to form the numerals 1953. The cloud of smoke turned and twisted into a dim outline of a picture. As it became clearer, I could see a crowd at the Metropolitan Opera House, buzzing around a brightly lighted marquee which read-Mary Josephine Williams, Soprano. How wonderful, Polly VVilliams-an opera star. I entered the lobby and there in front of me stood Mildred Powell and her husband, who always went out to 'dinner and to the theater on the maid's night out. They were busy talking and moved on before I could speak to them. While wondering which way to go, a tall, blonde, gentleman came toward me. Who could it have been but Brandford Stanley. He didn't recognize me, but how well I remembered him in the dear old days at S. H. S. Then the smoke began to rise and removed the theater from my view. I felt a liltle dis- appointed and wished there were more. Slowly, the smoke began to drift. There was another scene, a church, with no one in the pulpit. I was about to leave when. l heard a scraping, a shoveling. Yes, someone was shoveling coal. There was Louis llelk shoveling coal into the furnace. He must not have made the ministry. The next enchanting scene took place in a while walled hospital. The place was humming with busy nurses, busy looking for something to do. There was Anne Brown sweeping the Hoors, while Nancy VVlliams was dusting and Anne Wells was washing the windows. Why were they not tending patients? Oh, Ur. Hugh Vkfarren, Jr. and llr. George Richardson have cured all they haven't killed. I touched the lamp again and a lively scene confrontedl me. A large group of people were seated around a long heavily laden table. The children were chattering and everyone seemed to be having a good time. As the vision became clearer, I recognized Elsie, Anna, and Nancy Barlow. Their husbands were there, too. Those must have been their children ...,. Yes, all fifteen of them. Then, there appeared before my eyes a huge building, and in large letters across the front was VVorld's Largest Meat Packing Co. Had Gwaltney's and Luter's combined? I walked into a long corridor, at the end of which was a door marked Pres. Fritz Lindner. VV'ithout hesitation I went in to see him. He told me that Shelton Thacker was one of his foremen and many of the girls were his secretaries. Upon hearing that they were in the building, I hurried to see them. Before I opened the othce door I heard an almost deafening noise. When I did open the door, I saw Ann Clark, Catherine Bunch and Juanita Horne laughing, talking, and popping gum as they always did. Emily Edwards was trying to balance Nlr. Lindner's books, but as usual the noise kept her from working. Juanita told me that Bernard Griffin had a very large and prosperous farm and that Marilyn Kay was teaching French in a California High School. And speaking of schools, Emily told me that Sarah Anti Barlow was the dean and that Lillian Betts was teaching English in the University of Pagan Pines. That always was a thriving community. Then saw a street scene, and there was Ilan Ibelk. Ilan is now serving on the police force chasing reckless drivers. Quite a change from '-IR. Next, there appeared a tremendous crowd in the Rose Bowl watching the New Year's Game. And there was Royce Holdsworth coming in for his fourth touchdown. I noticed that the trumpet player in the band was none other than Jack llalton. llorothy Finley was among the spectators, and she told me of lher bookkeeping job at Leslie Thacker's Super Market. Ruby Powell answers the telephone at the market while Twyla Scott is the head clerk of the business. Dorothy also told me that Bobby Jones and Donald Galloway were building ships in the Newport News Shipyard, and that Melvin Gwaltney was quite famous for his marvelous inventions. The smoke cleared for the last time and I found myself back in the forest on the way home, still thinking of my old classmates and wishing them the best of luck. BARLOW, Proprietor COMPLIMENTS OF SIMPSON'S PHARMACY I 5 Ce ometimes it is the nature of a craft to create an unbreakable tie between itself and the worker in that field. a heart attachment equal to lifetime devotion. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of av camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer's ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality. and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always finrl himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. l'r'ur.r of f'.1'fw'riv1lfe lima' flI1If7!If Hx!
