Mr. Dunn has always been involved in sports. Buddy Ryan, who is now the defense coach for the Chicago Bears, coached him while he was on a full scholarship at the University of New York (Buffalo). Since 1974, Mr. Dunn has been head football coach at Smithfield High, and last year he was inducted into the Rhode Island Football Coaches Hall of Fame. As well as sports, he is also involved in the military: in 1984, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel in the Rhode Island National Guard. Currently, he is Commander of the 243rd. Engineer Battalion in Warwick. To top all this off, Mr. Dunn is also our Senior Class Advisor. Thank You, Mr. Dunn, for your 18 years of teaching at Smithfield High School as a Physical Education teacher and a coach, and sharing yourself with us for our four years here. The team started out strong, but the cross-over was stll a deter¬ mining factor for the standings. They reached the playoffs with a 6-8-2 record, which earned them a third place conference standing. Their first playoff game was against North Kingstown. Coach Skenyon was confident that he would lead the Sentinels to the quarter finals . . . and he did, with an outstanding shootout which ended in an 8-7 win for Smithfield. Hendricken ultimately beat them in the quarter finals, but we still remained one of the top teams in our division. Keith controls the defense. This was good for a second place finish in their division. Seniors Dave Tikoian and Bob Salisbury, along with underclassmen Eric Adkins, Steve Darling, Todd jutras, and Chris Croft chipped in with some big wins to aid the Sentinel cause. Tournament results were also very successful. Gino Cretella (3rd), Eric Silva (4th), Bill Salis¬ bury (3rd), and Mark Adkins (1st) showed their talents at the freshman states, while Jay Stiles (3rd) took home a medal in the J.V. tournament. The Suburban Tournament saw the Sentinels battle Ponaganset and Hope for the title and finish a strong second to Ponaganset. Scott Hansen (4th), Willy Moison (3rd), Dave Menatian (2nd), Dave Lombardo (1st), Mike Luther (1st), and Todd Howard (1st) were medal winners in the Suburban Tournament with Todd Howard being voted as the outstand¬ ing wrestler. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. 163 Congratulations Mary-Beth Walsh ' 86 Love, MOM DAD KATHLEEN ' 73 SHEILA ' 75 CHARLIE ' 76 TIM ' 77 DEIRDRE ' 80 JOHN ' 81 MICHAELA ' 83 TEL. 231-6488 _ item ' s Eeataurant FINE FOODS - COCKTAILS BILL DOLORES STEERE DOUGLAS PIKE RT. 7 295 SMITHFIELD.
