LaRue Todd was a person many of us chose to call our friend. He is no longer with us, but the memories of experiences shared will never fade. Although his death is difficult for us to understand, we must continue with our lives. But, first we would like to take the time to say good-bye to our friend. May you find peace, love, and happiness in your new world, Todd, and always remember that you are with us in our thoughts and hearts. You are deeply missed by everyone, and we all love you very much. our shadows taller than our soul There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last When all are one and one is all. To be a rock and not a roll. - ■ ■ ■ Football Smithfield had a very disappointing year with a record of 3-6-1, with victories over Central, Bristol and North Providence. The Sentinels were again victorious this season in the Turkey Bowl vs. North Providence Cougars with a score of 34-16. Kevin Haw¬ kins, Smithfields outstanding running back, had 3 touchdowns that day along with 2 from Al Fetta. The individual bragging rights this season belong to seniors, Kevin Hawkins, Robert Tartaglia and junior Kevin Van Gordon for earning First Team All Class Honors. Seniors Mike Mazzone and Co-Captian Mike Lancia earned Second All Class Honors. Although Co-Captain Tom Beefy Contillo was injured for a good part of the season his outstanding plays cannot be forgotten. Standing: C. Jackson, B. McCardo, B. Dillon, D. Tikoian, K. Van Gorden, M. Invitational Lansinger Race, the first time a Rhode Island team has ever won. The team also won the Burgess Memorial race for the second successive year and the Central Division Champion¬ ship with a 7-0 record. Smithfleld placed three runners on the All Class C Team; Ron Borden, Dave Bagus, and jay Stiles. The team finished up the season with it ' s stron¬ gest showing ever in the State Meet, finish¬ ing third, qualifying for the New England Championships. Because of their great sea¬ sons, Ron Borden and Dave Bagus were named to the All State Team. The leader¬ ship of senior tri-captains Dave Bagus, Glenn Clark, and Mark Bonvouloir, com¬ bined with the efforts of the rest of the team, allowed Coach Bennett to be named Coach of the Year. This year we won the Freshman Race in the Ocean State Carnival at Slater Park with Joely Parenteau and Tracey Parr finishing 1st and 2nd. The team peaked at the right time defeating a tough Ponaganset squad in their last league meet assuring them 5th place in the league. They ran a great race In the Class B Meet pushing the eventual win¬ ner, North Providence and tied with Lin¬ coln for 2nd place. If All-Class was picked for Girls X-Country Tracey, Joely, and Chris would have been in the Class B top 14. The future for the Lady Sentinel runners is Bright. Sitting: C. Geremia, C. Although plagued by several key injuries, as well as a lack of scoring punch, a solid defense helped keep the Sentinels in every game. Seasonal highlights Included a CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY in the Burrillville Scholarship Tournament, victories over Woonsocket and Burrillville (both playoff teams), as well as a 2-2 tie against a veteran LaSalle squad. Smithfield also placed four players on All-Division Teams. Our final record was 5-12-1. Standing: M. Mousseau, D. Tassoni, S. Weber, D. Ramage, K. Dingly, G. Horton, M. Luther, R. Lavallee, J. The team had a successful season in spite of a 6-10 record. We made the Quarter-Finals, but lost to the eventual State Champs, Davies Voca¬ tional. Senior Captain, Chris Walker, was selected to the All State League Third Team along with Junior Mike Cowen, who was selected to the All Division Second Team. The only unfortunate note in this years entire campaign was the medical problems Jim Bissett experienced. But ... he bounced back to show us that he is gutsy in more ways than one. Coach Benoit said the prospects are great for next year, with the expected return of ten out of twelve play¬ ers. Co-captains Dave Tassoni and Mike Cowan will lead Eric Banville, Mike Walker and Norm Gansert to great victories. Standing: Coach Benoit, M. Walker, N. Gansert, j. Fians, M. Cowan, E. Banville, R. The Lady Sentinels finished with a league record of 15-4 giving them the Northern Division Co-Championship on the final regular sea¬ son game. The overall team record was 25- 5. The last State Title won by the Lady Sentinels was In 1972. The seniors were outstanding in leading the way to the title. TrI- Captains Mindy Day, Chris Charron and Lori Catuogno set the pace for the rest of the team to follow. Mindy was having a super season until a serious knee injury forced her to the bench. She Continued to set a fine example with her leadership, spirit, and desire. Chris Charron took over the floor leadership after Mindy ' s injury and was a real spark. She saved several games with clutch baskets and many steals. She set a new State Championship record with 9 steals in the final game. Lori Ca¬ tuogno was voted most Desire and Hustle as she made valuable contributions both as a starter and off the bench. Her fine play in the playoffs against Classical was a key to our victory. Seniors, Dawn O ' Shea and Denise Thibeault played a valuable role off the bench throughout the regular season and in the playoffs, junior starter Sharon HIndle was immense and she was awarded many post season honors for her fine all around play. Sophomore Kathy Leddy did an outstanding job rebounding, on de¬ fense and shooting in the clutch. Notable were the clutch and poised performances shown by two freshman: Betsy Lange and Lisa Gansert. junior Kathy Guillerlane is un- stopable when she gets cranked up. Substi¬ tutes Sandy Weber, Suzanne Reynolds, Mary Beth Walsh, Leslie Catuogno, Mi¬ chelle Branch and Kim Hart have bright futures ahead of them. In Addition to the fine play of the Varsity: The j.V. The defense was backboned by Captain R.J. Lillibridge the third leading scorer and 1st Team All-Division on de¬ fense. The team scored more overall points than It has in several years. The team ' s record was 2 wins, 5 losses. Many of the girls came close to obtaining qualifying scores that would have placed them in the state meet. Co-captain Liz Roberts did qualify and compete In the state meet and was also named to the 2nd Team All-Divi¬ sion for the Northern League. Smith. 79 Baseball 1985 marked the return of Coach Bob Salisbury after a two year absence to as¬ sume the assistant principal duties. His task was one of re-construction, for most posi¬ tions were left vacant. This year ' s team fea¬ tured four seniors and was led by the captains Kevin Hawkins (left field) and Bob Colucci (third base). Additionally R.J. Lilli- bridge came in to play first base and Bill Scott handled the bulk of the mound du¬ ties. The offensive punch was supplied by Juniors Mike Healy, The 1985 batting champ (.357), Jeff Salisbury, (.325) at second base, John Parrillo (.295) in the outfield, and sophmore Robbie Mignacca (.300). Freshman Mike Mousseau was outstanding as the teams catcher while Junior Bob Squillante and Sophmore Bob Perry posted big mound victories with some fine perfor¬ mances. Scott Newell, Steve Weber, John Spenard, Mike Foncellino, and Andy Ner- ney all filled in very capably at the remain¬ ing positions. All will be back next year. The rebuilding Is over and 1986 promises to field an all-experienced team at all nine positions. Watch for us in the playoffs next year! Healy and Salisbury were elected co¬ captains for the 1986 season. Back Row: R. Mignacca, J. Pion, S. Weber, M. Mousseau, J. Spenard, B. Perry, Coach Salisbury. Second Row: B. Perry, N. Bellmore, Y. When I become a man I ' ll chew tobacco This is not one of Jeff ' s better days. 81 Boys Field And Track As we entered into the 1985 Track sea¬ son we felt optimistic about winning a divi¬ sion title. The reason for our optimism was the returning talent and number of quality performers on the team. We ended our season with 4 wins and 3 losses in our Northern League Dual Meet Competition. The three Losses we had were to teams who were in a higher class than we were; Woonsocket, Cumberland and Lincoln. Competing in the Class D Championships involving ten teams at the end of our sea¬ son we were now competing with teams that were comparable to us in size. As an¬ ticipated we won our class meet and ended the season with a championship. Congrat¬ ulations goes out to the three Co-Captains; Dan Foley, George Kelly and Dave Bagus and the entire team on their fine efforts. Back Row: B. Brown, G. Campopiano, C. Carberry, A. Segee, K. Girl ' s Field And Track The 1985 Girls Track Team reached its pinnacle with its victory in the Class C Championship and its first place finish in the statewide Performance Meet. Sparked by Co-Captains All-State, All-Division, Lori Catuogno and All-Division Chris Charron, the team posted a 6-1 record in the North¬ ern Division. Even with the seniors Chris, Lori, Kim, Dena, Missy, and Debby leaving, the team is looking forward to an outstand¬ ing future with the talent of Kathy Leddy, Julie Marz, Betsy Lange, and Leslie Ca- tugno. The team finished with a 7 and 5 record, good for a third place finish In a tough Western Division. Highlighting the season was a 13-0 victory over Scituate in which pitcher Cheryl Dingley hurled a no-hitter. Leading in offensive depart¬ ments were Dana Antonelli, Annie Boyes, Patty Leddy and Cheryl Dingley while Kris Sledzik, Co-Captain Joanne Paquette, Ja¬ mie Plante, Tiffany Hayes, Marybeth Walsh and Robin Deming (Co-Captain) anchored the defense. Sandy Weber, Judy Guilbeult and Jill Lillibridge also contibuted by com¬ ing off the bench. With some good players coming from the J.V. and a strong group remaining the lady Sentinels should be Ti¬ tle contenders for 1986. Top Row; R. Catuogno, M. Walsh, L. Capllli, C. Placido, S. The teams season record was 7 wins 3 losses. It was led by Co-Captains Mark Bonvouloir and John Noke.
