For nine years he served Smithfield High School as administrator and friend. Now in his new position as Director of Personnel and Curriculum, we would like to wish him well in all his future endeavors and thank him for all his guidance. 2 In Memoriam It is in the memory of Mrs. Murial Nicholson, secretary and friend, that we, the members of the Class of ’83, dedicate this yearbook. ! ENTERING r « WE LOVE OUR TOWN PLEASE DO NOT LITTER SM1THF1ELD CONSERVATION COMM Frightened at first is how we all felt, the fear that we had was kept under our belt. As times went on the simplicities lessened, the one question in our mind was where are we destined? 4 We laughed, we cried with many a friend, but soon our senior year will come to an end. And at this time our feelings will be mixed, but soon our future intentions will be fixed. 5 V The weekends came and we all could go wild, because we no longer had the mind of a child. We were all out to get what we think life is about, when we did not get it, we would not pout. 6 In high school life there were rules to obey, but in college life it will be a whole new way. 7 Credit will be given to those who took it in stride, who gave their greatest effort in whatever they tried. 8 The Proms and Balls will be greatly missed, But from our minds will never be dismissed. 9 You made life in high school what you wanted it to be, and now this will determine your lasting memory. 10 All the important information teachers put on em¬ phasis, But if you think about it we only scratched the surface. All the great knowledge that we did learn will all go towards the goal we hope to earn. n As we look ahead things aren’t as clear, so we look to each other to calm our fear. 12 As we see it now, the future looks easy and carefree, but this is only a vision in our future fantasy. 13 Graduation Through our senior year, we have come to see The other side of our friends that changed so drastically Some of them were phony; some of them were true There were those we hated, but there were only a few We laughed, we cried with many a friend But soon our senior year will come to an end And at this time our feelings will be mixed But soon our future intentions will be fixed We have no problems or worries that matter But once June comes the easy life will shatter Our high school life we hold so dear Because college life is what we fear Our senior year has gone by, for some it ' s been twice But now it’s the start of a whole new life In high school life there were rules to obey But in college life it will be a whole new way The Proms and Balls will be greatly missed But from our minds will never be dismissed Frightened at first is how we all felt The fear that we had was kept under our belt As time went on the simplicities soon lessened The one question in our minds was where are we destined? The weekends came and we all could go wild Because we no longer had the mind of a child We were all out to get what we think life is about When we didn ' t get it we wouldn’t pout We had to try harder at everything we did To prove we’re an adult and no longer just a kid In the beginning we acted and dressed the same But the older we got the more of an individual we became All the important information teachers put on emphasis But if you think about it, we only scratched the surface All the great knowledge that we did learn Will all go towards the goal we hope to earn Credit will be given to those who took it in stride Who gave their greatest effort in whatever they tried As we see it now the future looks easy and carefree But this is only a vision in our future fantasy You made life in high school what you wanted it to be And now this will determine your lasting memory Chris Adler Scrad Teri Aiello Jacqueline Alpaio Jackie Keep Smiling Lisa M. Earn All-Class Honors Under the outsanding leadership of Co- Captains Charlie Newell and Tony Catalfomo the Sentinel football team was once again a Class BB power. With such attributes as solid defence, speed, and enthusiasm the Sentinels won 7 ball games to 3 losses. Newell earned All-Class and Coaches All- State honors as a linebacker, while Catalfomo was an All-Class runningback. Five others made All-Class, they are tight end Earl Porter, running back Mike Clukey. end Paul Conti, and the two pillars of the offensive and defensive lines. Seniors Rich Lancia and Dennis Paul. Porter was the teams leading scorer while Clukey’s intercepted pass and touchdown return iced a 20-8 homecoming victory over East Greenwich. Quarterback Al Cappelli was outstanding all year long. His passes seemed to find their way to split end Chris Adler, who caught a few big TD aireals. Defensive end Ray Robinson did his usual superb job rushing passes and squelching opposing runners going around the end. The hero of the 8-0 win over Westerly was senior guard Don Robitaille who, with only minutes left and the Bulldogs threatening, picked off a pass to insure the victory. Chris Calise, a big senior tackle, was truly feared around BB and Mike Potter did everything from kicking off to scoring the winning touchdown from the fullback slot at Portsmouth. Coach Dunn will certainly miss these 13 fine Seniors and heres hoping such juniors as Ken LaBrie, John Caliri, Mike Hart, and Woofa Hawkins can make the Sentinels winners again next season. Shortstop Bob LaBrie again earned All-Division hon¬ ors on the third team as did Ray Rob¬ inson, who was the most feared de¬ fensive catcher in the league. Tom Kulisch and Steve Simeone both toed the rubber and swing potent bats. Si- meone’s superb relief job gave the Sentinels their first round playoff win over Burriville. Bruce Sexter, the speed demon, and steady Gene Cian- caglini round the seniors for the champ. Walt Lepere, the teams ace, and lefty Al Carlton will return on the hill next year. Ken Brown, who had a great offensive year, and Ken LaBrie will be counted on heavily for their bats next spring. Both earned All-Di¬ vision second team honors. This team had a rare blend of talent, class, char¬ acter, and enthusiasm. They are most deservedly the 1983 BLACKSTONE VALLEY DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP. Always a threat on the bases is Jim Salisbury. Beth Reall, Paula Bruno and Rachael Bridgehouse were the top female performers. Jay DiSandro, Bruce LaBarre, Jim Bissett and Jim Per¬ ron all contributed admirably to the four victories. Seniors Tony Catalfomo, John Reynolds and Joe Joyce captained the team. Catalfomo was All-League in the javelin. Reynolds, alo ng with Dave Parenteau, Dave Bagus, and Bob Forrestt broke the school medley record. Big Riel Pannone was the Sentinels top weight man and Chris Noke and Pat Martin, both seniors, were two of Coach Buglio’s best runners. Girls’ Track Coach Lelli’s final team The female Sentinels finished competition with a 8 and 3 record in the Northern Division. Wendy lannuzzi and Donna Brown, co¬ captains, finished 4 years of fine running for Coach Lelli’s team. Each girl earned many postseason honors during their careers. Denise Dexter, a distance runner and just a frosh. had a strong spring for the girls. Lori Catuogno seamed All-State second team honors in the weight events. Lynn Charron developed into one of the finest sprinters around; she’ll be around next year, hopefully, injury free. This was Coach Jack Lelli’s final team and they made Smithfield High very proud. What a Ham! Golf . . . Fore! The Sentinel golf team, for the 1983 season, featured seniors Bob Reilly and Pat Green and junior All-Division player Todd Curley. These three helped the team to a 4 and 6 record, not bad considering they had to play such powers as Cumberland and Scituate. Curley, the teams most talented player, had an outstandi ng showing in the state tourney. Senior Paul Conti and Sophomore Jack Noke rounded out the pointscorers. Three sophomores and four freshmen will be back for Coach Jack HArt’s team. If these underclassmen can continue to shoot low scores the Sentinels could give a strong pitch for the division title. BOX 206 NORTH SCITUATE, R.I. 02857 Congratulations Class Of ’S3 The Class With Lots Of Class” SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL D. Palmieri ' s Bakery Killingly St. Johnston, Rt Editors Note: I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped create the Anvil 83 - Paula, Lesley, Wendy, Donna and Jimmy, our hard work and caring will always be remembered on the one hundred and sixty pages that capture the Class of I983’s spirit, vitality and fever. A special thanks to Mrs. Mary- Margaret ladevaia whose patience and thoughtfulness were more than inspiring to me. I hope when looking back at this yearbook you can remember all the happy memories we shared. Let us not be sad because it is in the past, but instead try to gain strength from our beginnings. Kathleen Reilly Editor An Advisor’s Afterword: As advisor to the 1983 Anvil, I am pleased and proud to say that I was truly able to do just that - ADVISE! The students involved in creating this yearbook, particularly Kathy Reilly, displayed enough maturity and responsibility to work quite independently and self-assuredly, Kathy ' s work and efforts, along with those of Paula Hebert, Donna Brown, Jimmy Salisbury, Wendy lannuzzi and Lesley DeStefanis are quite evident and this yearbook is something of which they should be proud. Please enjoy it and be proud of it with them! Mary-Margaret ladevaia Advisor RI REF Yearbook 1983 Storag Smithfield High School Yearbook : Anvil 3205100081511-4 . ssrs Gresnvm®. —
