The first half of the season demonstrated this as the Sentinels outscored their first six opponents in a combined score of 204 to 26. On Nov. I however, luck turned against Coach Dunn ' s team when they were to face St. Ray’s in a game that would decide the championship. The Sen¬ tinels had a long list of injuries including co-captains Kevin Roberts and Ernie DiMuecio. The Sentinels ended their season as they defeated N.Prov. 23-6 in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game. Although the Sentinels will be losing a fine group of seniors, juniors such as Tom Bennett, Bob DiMuecio, Jim Hart, Charlie Newell and Tony Catal- forno will be returning next season in hopes of keep¬ ing the Sentinel power alive. Fielding its smallest team in several seasons, the girls were not able to overcome a rash of injuries and broke their consecutive streak of three New England Championship appearances by finishing sixth in the State Meet. While healthy, the team compiled a 7-1 division record, finished third at Fort Shantok, Conn., second at Manhattan College, N.Y., as well as being runner-up in the Class B Championship Meet. With only two seniors, co-captains Lisa O’Connor and Nancy Oliva, the team will be returning five of its top seven performers. Second team All-State and All-Division selection Wendy lannuzzi along with All-Division team members Lyn Anderson and Cindy Roan were the Sentinels top three 1980 runners. Joined by fourth ranked Donna Brown and seventh rated Maria Elgar, the team has a nucleus that could take it back to New England Championship competition in Vermont in 1981. ' V Co-Capt. Coach Brochu, expecting a fine season with his Sen¬ tinel Booters, chalked up a slate of four wins, eleven losses and three ties — much to his surprise! A team dominated by seniors such as senior co-captains Da¬ vid Day and Dan Greene and a crew consisting of Mike Lowe, Jerry Foley, Paul Perers, Steven Colun- tuono, Brian Fugere, Ray Fontaine, Mike Hurley, Pe¬ ter Gabriele and Bobby O’Day also had high hopes for the season! Being led by co-captains Sue Boyle and Rosie Matera, the Girls Field Hockey Team for the 1980 season sported a record of five wins, four losses and one tie - just missing out on a play-off berth. Beside the two senior co-captains, other seniors who will be sorely missed are Chris Forrest and Janet Schott. This year’s team had a number of players honored on the All-Division and All-State Teams. Senior Sue Boyle was named to the First Team All-Division and Second Team All-State. Junior Debbie Hardman was named to the Second Team All-Division. Michelle Buteau, sophomore, Chris Forrest, senior, and Lynn Charron, junior, were all named to the Honorable Mention All-Division Team. The number of players on the team doubled from the 1979 to the 1980 season with a total of 25 players between the j.v. and varisty teams. The loss of our seniors will be felt immensely but with the hard work of the remaining players and the rookies coming up. Coach Sue Raposa contends that Smithfield will be a name for other field hockey teams to deal with. Getting psyched for the game. All-Star selection for the Sentinels was Frank Davey at 119 lbs. The Sentinels also had four All-League selections: Dave Pla¬ cido and Paul Cugno were chosen for the first team. The team put on a fine show¬ ing at the Suburbon Tournament where Paul Cugno and Bobby DiMuceio both took a first place and Kevin Roberts a fourth place. Both DiMuceio and Cugno took part in the State Tournament. Paul earned a fourth and Bobby earned a sec¬ ond which enabled him to be selected to the second team All-State. Although the team con¬ sisted of 7 underclassmen, they achieved a fine record of 3 wins and 7 losses. The S.H.S. gymnas¬ tics team was led by Co-Captains Michelle Harnois and Lesley DeS¬ tefanis. Leading scorer Bill Bennett drives for two more 100 Mike Tartaglia runs the offense Jim Hart out hustles everyone Twas a rough season” Paul Dwyer on the move Though the Sentinel Boys’ Basketball team compiled a ver uncharacteristic losing record Coach Benoit is not offer¬ ing any alibis. Senior Captain Bill Mitchell and seniors Paul Dwyer, Dave Danielson and Mike Tartaglia with support¬ ing cast of some promising underclassmen led by Bill Ben¬ nett and Jim Hart provided the fans with some exciting basketball throughout the season. The win and loss record does not express the truly im¬ portant qualities of this team, said, Coach Benoit. They always maintained their basic optimism and spirit which sustained them through a roller coaster type season. In many of the games the scores were not indictive of how competative the games were played. Therefore, the losses were exasperating but the team remained undaunted. All in all the record stands at 4 victories and 16 defeats, a fact that may soon be forgotten. What should be remem¬ bered is that our seniors upheld the true Sentinel tradi¬ tions of always being competative and always bouncing back, the points that really count in life. _ The scramble for the ball Good for two! Junior Tom Bennett led the scoring over nine sen¬ iors. All-Stars Steve Erbe and Mike Lowe were not far behind, while Mark Campbell and Tim Gorton also contributed greatly. Co-Captains DiMuccio and Fu- gere were both selected to the All-Division Team on Defense and Tom Winfield just missed out. A coura¬ geous comeback by Joe Mattera and an unselfish switch to goalie by Dan Greene highlighted the sea¬ son. Anvil ' 81 is finally completed and, hopefully, will be enjoyed by all who read it. Putting a yearbook together is no easy job and credit must be given to those who created this book. The Anvil 81 staff members worked long and hard and deserve our thanks. Editor Susan Boyle must be singled out as the Backbone” of this yearbook. I personally hate” to see her graduate as she’s worked incredibly hard for the past three years on the Anvil staff, two of those years as editor. If anyone ever deserved an Outstanding Editor’s Award, she certainly does and within my own realm I bestow it upon her! Again, thanks to all who helped to create Anvil ' 81. I hope you enjoy it Mary- Margaret ladevaia Yearbook Advisor Editor ' s Note: I realize that as everyone looks through the 1981 yearbook there will be words of praise for some pages and criticism for others. This book does not have colored pictures nor does it include every person in the schools picture. It does not have any super cover or a giant centerfold . . . I wonder if I owe anyone an apology because all of these are lacking in Anvil ’81. I don ' t think I owe anyone an apology. This book may not have a lot of SUPER” different things inside it but what it does have is very special. Every page of this book is a memory of what is now our past. I hope that every member of the class of ' 81 is able to pick up this yearbook and, as you go through it, I hope you can smile, laugh, and maybe even shed a tear. If this book allows you to do any one of these, than I feel it is a success. I would like to thank everyone who helped me put this book together. I feel I must single out Jen Clossick, Sandy Smith, Kyle Edward, and Sue Brown because without them I would have lost everything!!! I also want to thank Mrs. ladevaia for being the best advisor anyone could work with. We haven ' t had it easy over the last few years but we ' ve always pulled through. To all my classmates I wish you the best of luck and years of success. See you all at the reunion! Susan Boyle Editor 152 For Reference 573 Putnam Pike fcanville, Rl 0282 fc I
