SEPTEMBER, 1974 The Smithfield High School Class of 1978 (sounds official! ) are now freshmen. Most of the first day was occupied by ' ' orientation. 1 ' What was supposed to happen was we were to be deterred from the sinful ways of sophomores, juniors, and seniors,, and we were to be the new model students. What really happened was sort of a reunion. All one heard was something like ' ' Hey, Bob, how was your summer? ' ' ' ' OK, and yours? ' ' The new freedom of high school was somewhat shocking. After all, in the Junior High someone who carried around cigarettes hidden in the deepest pocket was a mean guy and someone to be respected But, Wow! , here you walked in front of Mr. Shepard with them in your shirt pocket and you were really cool As freshmen we gave our first Christmas skit. To say that it bombed is kind. The student body ' s general reaction was an enthusiastic ' ' HUH? ? ' ' We told ourselves that it was above their heads and we really had knocked ' em dead after all. The freshman year ended on an upbeat note We were growing up now and could hold our heads high. We ' d weathered the ' ' 3rd floor by the pool ' ' jokes and we were now ready to take our honored place as sophomores. Heh ! Heh! SEPTEMBER, 1975 Gee ! Summer went by fast (little did we know.) It was time for our second year of high school. We were sopho¬ mores now; we knew where it was at. It was our turn to bust up the little freshmen and we searched all over the school first period that first day for a lost one. Glory be, there he was. ' ' Hey, kid, looking for a room? ' ' Yeah, 215. Where is it? ' ' Third floor by the pool. ' ' Listen, man, tell me where the room is and cut the bull. To say the least, this exchange deflated our egos a bit. As for our second try at stardom in the Christmas skit . it ' s best left to the imagination. The other main event in our sophomore year was getting our class rings Our reac¬ tion was ' ' Great! I can ' t wait. ' ' Our parents ' reaction was ' ' Seventy-five dollars? Do you realize what that bought in my time ? ' ' SEPTEMBER, 1976 Happy Birthday, America ! And now we ' re juniors. Can ' t wait for that Christmas skit. This time we had a smash¬ er. A ' ' Welcome Back Kotter ' ' spoof. What a concept! We ' ll be great. But . to put it bluntly, we were dragged off stage by frantic seniors who were afraid the restless mob would miss part of their brilliant sketch. We snickered and snarled at the poor seniors but, thankfully, had little time to pity our own efforts because the Christmas Ball came rushing at us. A proverbial good time was had by all, except Mr. Graham, who waited in vain for the pho¬ tographer to show up. His only consolation was his ' ' Whoops ' ' button. Spring flew by and with it came the dreaded SAT ' s and the prom. The less said about SAT ' s the better, but the prom was another matter We moondanced our way into the night and decided maybe this place wasn ' t so bad after all. Just one month to go before seniors gra¬ duate, and then, our first brief taste of the long-awaited ' ' Senior Privileges ' ' SEPTEMBER, 1977 ' ' This is it! It ' s funny, I don ' t feel like a senior. ' ' It was with happiness and confidence that we strode through the doors of Smithfield High for the fourth time. For we were seniors that magical, mystical creature which has no problems or cares and happily completes high school and goes on to college. Boy, were we wrong! There were term papers to do, colleges to select, privileges to keep - and lose But our last chance for glory ar¬ rived with the final Christmas skit. Our president took one look at rehearsal and uttered those now-famous words, ' ' Cancel it. ' ' Clicks ' ' became very big in the senior year and you really weren ' t someone unless you played sports or were in the Concert Choir. And there were groups that had night-time exploits such as ' ' The Miller Boys. ' ' The Christmas Ball came and went and, as seniors, it was ' ' old hat ' ' to us now. We finished the second quarter and according to the old legend, we studied less and partied more The third quarter report cards came out and we quickly found out why legends are legends and not facts We partied less and studied more until we entered the home stretch in May Beaches, tuxes, and a $35 prom Ticket were now on our minds We ' ' rizzed to the Sheraton Islander and shared moments that were ' ' precious and few ' ' We held those moments for a week until we finally reached the summit graduation. Euphoria ! We had finally arrived, and as we reached for that most im¬ portant piece of paper, all the memories came rushing back. With a feeling of accomplishment, joy, and a little bit of sadness, we left Smithfield High School and danced out into the night. Hmmm, I wonder if they have Christ¬ mas skits in college ? And when it came, school was dismissed early on February 6 The excitement was enough to plow the front entrance as the students gushed out the doors The sky was a fluffy white mass in which we had to use our hands as windshield wipers What a day! Somehow students made it home, but we were the lucky ones Thousands were stranded and we were not able to rescue them. The whole episode turned into a full week of emergency broadcasts, shoveling, walking to the market and shivering For us students it was the best gift old man winter could have bestowed. Two lovely weeks of romping through snowdrifts and doing exactly what we pleased. And isn ' t that what our sen¬ ior class is really into doing ex¬ actly what we please ! 85 Charlene Winfield and date find time for a touch dance Sheila Cabral claps with the rhythm of the beat. Mark 11 Cookie ' ' Gilchrist left Smithfield High School to pursue a professional soccer career in Scotland Cookie ' s departure in February of 1978 was a sad time for all of us. We have the memories of his freshman year in which he led the J V Soccer team to a record of 12 wins and 1 loss. In his sophomore year Mark started to make himself known to R.I soccer, making the Metropolitan All-Division team. In his junior year he led Smithfield ' s Cinderella soccer team to the State finals scoring 7 of Smithfield ' s 9 goals in the playoffs. He finished his junior year with the honor of 3rd in the State in scoring and made the R.I All- State team as well as the All-New England team. Cookie entered his senior soccer season with the repu¬ tation as the best player in the State; he finished as one of the best players in the country Mark ' s bril¬ liance in both the playoffs and regular season earned him the honor of ' ' All-American. ' ' But what made Mark special to us was his humility and friendship. Mark was thought of as a superman on the field but to many classmates he was the good friend who we all came to know and love An artist at work. For the second year in a row the Sentinels reached the State finals and fell just short of the title The regular season was highlighted by Coach Brochu ' s 100th victo¬ ry, several key come-from-behind wins, and finishing the regular season in a tie for second. The first game of the playoffs saw the Sentinels trailing 3-2 with 17 seconds left in the game when Mark Gilchrist scored and sent the game into overtime Two overtime per¬ iods were played and the game was decided in a spe - cial penalty-kicking session with the Sentinels winning the dramatic encounter 4-3 The semi-finals saw a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 Sentinel victory over Hendricken. The game was highlighted by a tremen¬ dous 3 goal performance by Mark Gilchrist. The next day it just wasn ' t in the cards for the Sentinels in the State finals as they fell to Barrington 4-1 We will never forget those thrilling ball games Dick Brochu — Top School¬ boy Soccer Coach In Rhode Island Goalie Steve Lynch stops another try at the nets. Its start was promising with one vic¬ tory , one loss and one tie. The team then proceeded to drop the last six out of eight games for a 2-4-1 division record, giving them a fourth place tie with Portsmouth for the season. The offensive line ' s inexperience and key injuries proved to be a de¬ ciding factor in the team ' s performance.
