He proceeded to rattle off about a zillion rules from a student handbook, and we sat there listening to him talk about .things we assumed must be very important. We glanced around nervously, realizing how few people we really knew in the world. Meanwhile, at the far end of the auditorium, I noticed Joe Corsi sitting sound asleep. We watched with dropped jaws as an incredibly enormous man in black-framed glasses and gym shoes slowly approached Joe. He stood behind Joe ' s chair a minute, looking disgusted, and then swung his arm back and then downward — powerfully! To the tune of Mr. Dunn ' s college ring cracking against the head of poor Joe Corsi, our four years at Smithfield High School be¬ gan. Technically we were freshmen although the correct term was Stupid Freshmen, and we heard it often. When we couldn ' t figure out how to open our locker, someone would say, That Stupid Freshman! Or when we didn ' t knock before entering the lav, or got sent to the third floor next to the swimming pool, some smart upperclassmen would say, Stupid Freshman! We learned many important things that year, like how period seven fits into the schedule. Or how many times Ramblin ' Man could be played on the jukebox before a group of enraged seniors finally carried the damn thing into the courtyard and attacked it with rocks and forks. But, most importantly, we would learn how to make new friends, and friends are what high school is all about. September, 1974 Definition of a sophomore, growled Mr. Dunn, is a Wise Fool. He explained that a sophomore or Smart Fool, if you prefer, was someone who thought he knew everything. We sat, listening, in our new gym suits that for some reason smelled like spray paint when new. After all, last year ' s gym suits were too small by now. Despite Mr. Dunn ' s speech, we spent our first day as sophomores thinking we were pretty cool and sending Stu¬ pid Freshmen to the third floor near the pool. But for the most part, being a sophomore wasn ' t much better than being a Stupid Freshman. The biggest thing that happened that year was right before Christmas when about a dozen kids from S chool were arrested on (gasp!!) drug charges, and Smithfield High was actually on Channel 12 ' s On the Scene News. Thrillsville! September, 1975 Welcome back, said Mr. Shepard. Once again he proceeded to rattle off the zillion rules which we then knew by heart. Our junior year was the year that high school became more than going to classes and getting pushed around by upperclassmen. It was a year of problems, like realizing it was a week before the Christmas Ball and we didn ' t have a date yet. It was a year of bummers, like taking the PSAT ' s. But probably the most gratifying thing of the year was the few days right after graduation, when the seniors were gone and we were given senior privileges. When those days finally came, we ' d sprint out to the courtyard, grab a seat on a bench, light up a cigarette, and assume an on campus position. We were finally at the top of the heap. September, 1976 Definition of a privilege... said Mr. Dave Reilly. He was about to give us our senior privileges but not before a lengthy speech which contained some of the wildest vocabulary we had ever heard. He said that we could kibbitz on the terrazzo, but only if we disposed of the spent butts in the proper receptacles. Also, kibbitzing under the overhang was to be frowned upon, unless the weather was inclement. Areas such as the terrazzo and the overhang were designated as the senior turf. Can you dig it? After consulting our Funk and Wagnalls, we sprinted out to the courtyard, grabbed a seat on the bench lit a cigarette, and assumed an on campus position. Our senior year was the year of decision. What were we to do with our lives after high school? Of course there was the business of taking SAT ' s, Achievements, and applying for college, but otherwise it was fun. It was the great¬ est year of our lives. For some of us, it was the end of our formal education, but for many of us, it was a time to get ready for college where we will once again become Stupid Freshmen. What a bummer! 52 Principal Henry P. Shepard Smithfield High School Pleasant View Avenue Esmond. R. I. 02917 June 10. 1977 TEL 049 2050 Class of 1977 Smlthfleld High School Smithflald, R. WINTER 1977 The winter of 1977 will long be remembered as the coldest, most bit¬ ter and most unpredictable winter of the century. It started in Octo¬ ber, when December’s weather came two months early, and ended with an incredible snowstorm on May 10th. The local weathermen completely wore out the phrase, If you don ' t like the weather in New England, wait a minute. It was about seven months of chapped lips, snowballs, stalled cars, shoveling walks and Salty Brine saying, No school in Smithfield. It is over now and hopefully next winter won ' t be quite as intense. But when we look back on the winter of ' 77, we will remember not the bitter cold, but the friends who made it warm enough to get by. With the advantage of two outstanding co-captains, sen¬ iors Jim Poon and Paul De- Mars, and the relentless coaching of Jim Dunn, the Sentinels could not help but completely annihilate nearly every major team they went up against. After a less than colorful start, the team or¬ ganized themselves and rompled over Hope 20-6 in early November. A week later, taking St. Ray ' s 7-6, the Sentinels tied for first place. On Thanksgiving, North Providence became the turkey feast as Smithfield carved a 20-6 victory, cap¬ turing the Division title. The Sentinels got off to a shaky start at Warwick when the Vets outplayed them 6-2. The rest of the season evened itself out with the Sentinels hauling in 7 wins, losing 7, and tying 2, thereby racking up a total of 16 points. Smithfield ' s all-State, all-l lew England first team center half-back. Cookie Gilchrist, was a very prominent figure during most of the season. In the first quarter-finals game against Portsmouth, it was Cookie who scored all three goals, clinching a 3-1 victory. When the Sentinels met Mount Pleasant at Pierce Stadium in the semi-finals, they wrapped it up neatly with a 3-0 blanking. The deciding test arose as Smithfield squared off with East Providence in the finals. The fates were not with them that day, though, as our boys suffered a 5-3 defeat.
