10 YEARS LATER Smithfield High School has reached the end of its first decade of service to the community of Smithfield. As the pictures portray on this page, the history of the building is readily apparent. From the first hole exca¬ vated, to structural work in the auditorium corridor, to masonry work in the courtyard, there was always one element missing—people. Now that this latter element has been added for ten year ' s worth of seasoning, it can be said the building has mellowed and aged gracefully. The men whose names are listed on the commemorative plaque must be justly proud of their accomplishment. Now, Smithfield High School must turn its attention to meeting head-on the problems and challenges of its second decade of existence. Again as before, it is peo¬ ple who will make this happen. The valuable legacy of our free society must continue to be the conviction that education is the key to a successful existence. For their continued support and enthusiastic cooperation, the ed¬ itors and staff rededicate this edition of the ANVIL, as we did our first edition, to all the citizens of Smith- field who recognize the importance of preparing students for tomorrow ' s world with the best possible means— education.
