DEDICA TION ANVIL ’70 is dedicated to the faculty of Smithfield High School who were so instrumental in our gaining the full ten year accreditation from the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Not to be forgotten are the administration, student body, and staff who were singled out for their superior attitude and congenial spirit, all of which makes us proud to be called the Smithfield Sentinels. 17 Smithfield School Committee: Dr. Paul A. Right: Backfield in motion; Below: One, two, cha-cha-cha 40 The Soccer team again enjoyed a successful season, winning seven shutouts while losing eight games, five of which were only one goal defeats. Highlight of the season was a 2-0 vic¬ tory over Chariho with Doug Leach scoring two goals in the second overtime. Holding down defense this year were co-captain John White in goal, Glenn Mitchell at fullback, and Steve Courtemanche and Tom Andrade at the halfback positions. The soccer team has done a creditable job this past season and we look forward to another successful sea¬ son next September. Up, up, and away! LaChance — (Co-capt), John Thanos. Our Cross Country team is one of which we can be proud. The team made the Class C playoffs this year and did well in them, finishing fifth out of eleven teams. Having qualified also for the State meet, they ran and finished a respectable nineteenth out of forty teams. Smithfield High’s Cross Country team will be back next season with a loss of four team members — Ron Cardone, Richard LaChance, Steve Halben, and Jim Gallagher. Team captains for the forthcoming season will be Paul Lyons and Gene Beaudoin. We look for more great things from Coach Law¬ rence’s runners next year. 43 FOOTBALL ’69 Best season ever . . . The future of the SHS football team this season looked very optimistic while the Sentinels were preparing for an all-out per¬ formance. In the spring, the practices were difficult, but the team showed steady im¬ provement, looking forward to the Injury Fund scrimmage against Lincoln. Although at first defeated, the team accepted its pre-season faults but they never doubted their potential. The first major game was an exhibition against Georgetown, Mass., in which the team presented SHS its first vic¬ tory. The team had Fran Parente and Dan Hickey on the first team of the Class C se¬ lections and Steve Kanarian on the second. Honorably mentioned were Anthony Au- tiello, Dwight Darling, Richard Pickles, Gary Crandall, John Arena, Peter White- cross, Jim O’Donnel, Jim Heggarty, Kevin Osborne, and Alan Poon. Unfortunately, the team will lose fourteen seniors next year, but all students are counting on the rising underclassmen to carry on their tradi¬ tion of growing experience and ability. Two bodies are better than one!!? Ouch!!! 44 Action runs high on the gridiron! First Row: D. Darling, G. Crandall, R. Pickles, S. Kanarian, D. Provonsil, R. Bolton, K. McKav, J. Arena, J. Gomes Dear Graduates: May I extend the congratulations of the Smithfield Republican Town Committee for your outstanding achievements during the past twelve years The coming year may well be the most important year in your life During this time you will make decisions that may have an everlasting effect on your future. In whichever course your future may be set, we feel that the following words of our sixteenth President are timely: M Labor was prior to capital, but property is the fruit of labor Property is desirable and is a positive good to the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example insuring that his own house will be safe from violence when built Chairman Ralph T. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.ā€ (Henry D. Thoreau) The importance of the individual is the theme of ANVIL 70 ; for he is the basic unit of society. We have attempted to portray the student body as individuals with thoughts and desires, but united as a class. It is the individual efforts of our staff that have been combined to make the ANVIL 70 possible. We break from tradition by inserting a section entitled ā€œPEOPLEā€ designed to show our peers as they exist as individuals. This added mode of realism is in¬ tended to complement the standard mode of portraits and group photographs. We, the editors, would like to thank all who made this book of memories a reality, and we hope that in years to come the Class of 1970 will be remembered as more than just a class.
