Here they practice with me from September to November and yell with delight each time I soar into the opponent’s goal. Now I think of myself as a real member of the team — our team.” “Our team did quite well this year and has now built a reputation as one of the finest soccer teams in our high school division. The sweetest victories were against scrappy teams from Mt. My ‘time’ is the fall and my ‘place’ is the football field. My life is not the ordinary sort of existence; in fact, I always become quite dizzy when I am thrown in the air. To complicate matters, I am not always caught, I lose my breath easily, and players fight over me when there is a fumble. One thing I can say is that Smithfield High School’s football team is aggressive and never lets up where I am concerned.” “Although we did not win any games during the ’68-’69 season, certain outstanding players such as James Connell, Norman Dudemaine, and Mark Latham provided the spirit, sportsmanship, and leadership that is so necessary in any highly competitive sport.” “I never could understand why I was tossed in the air so much, but as the season progressed, I must admit that I began to recognize how determined a team I was playing with each Saturday. I sincerely wish the team a victorious season for the coming year; I know that I will be ready now that I know the game and have a year’s experience under my skin. The ball hung precariously over the rim but Smithfield was too far behind. It seemed that when the ‘HOME’ lights blinked steadily, I would run out of time. No one realizes the life of a hockey puck. I changed from a perfectly formed rubber puck to a battered and bruised one in only a few short months. I can’t complain, though, since I worked long hours for a determined team that strove to improve their game as the season wore on.” “Our goalie, Stephen Smith, won an award voted by his teammates as ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the season. Even though I’m quite sore from him pushing me, I know he deserves praise for his efforts. Since this is only the first year for Smithfield in league competition, victory was an elusive thing. But I know that their spirit never lagged. Even though I’ll be retired and watching from the sidelines next year, Smithfield High’s hockey team has already earned my full support.” “I helped the team the best way I knew how this year. After all. I’m not as experienced as most hockey pucks. I’m certain my replacement will work as hard and as long as I have with the team and lead them on to victory next year.” “Any team that has members loyal enough to practice at odd hours, to play against superior, experienced teams, to lose game after game and never admit defeat, deserves the support and encouragement of the entire student body.” no SEA TED: W. I’m sorry I didn’t write sooner, but I’ve been working very long hours at my new home, Smithfield High School. At first, I thought I’d be too homesick for the factory to work hard for my team, but I’m with some great guys and the excitement is terrific! Our coach, Mr. Salisbury, has helped us imp rove our playing a great deal. Jim Connell, Mike Lolicata, and Ron Ragno will be leaving after this year. They were good players and good friends. But we’ll still be a great team next year because we have players like Pete Whitecross, Wayne Brown, Bobby Bolton, and other JV squad members to help us. One final word. Mom and Dad. ZUCHOWSKI ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Dear Graduates, Your yearbook is a recapitulation of school activities for the year 1968-1969. In another real sense, it is both a memory book and a prospectus for the members of the Class of 1969. I am writing to all the students of the Senior High with a point of emphasis for the June graduates. You should, in developing your aims, keep your immediate goals clearly in mind, but each step and each success will form the total design that must give you the ultimate goals you wish to achieve. The pursuit of excellence is not limited to a few, or a lot, but it should be the goal of everyone. The American people have always had a deep faith in education and a willingness to sacrifice in order to support our educational goals. We believe that through education our lives can and will be better. I hope, as step by step you complete your immediate tasks, you will realize that education must stimulate the pursuit of excellence and that the central goal of education is to foster the development of a civilized world. A striking aspect of our schools is the spreading understanding that we must join together to nurture the development of a civilized world. Student awareness clamors for this development with the eradication of abject poverty and distressing human inequality. Dedicate yourselves to continue towards this goal in a lawful and orderly manner and the brightness of the future is almost blinding with its promise of greatness. I. 02917 Class of 1969 Smithfield High School Smithfield, Rhode Island 02917 Dear Members of the Class of 1969 s Since September, 1965 5 when you entered into the membership of Smithfield High School, you have been among the first in all your endeavors here. You have aided in the shaping of the traditions of our School and your task has been a difficult though important one. For four years you have struggled against seemingly insurmountable odds to complete your high school education. Now you have reached that goal and stand at the threshold of adulthood; articulate, knowledgeable, and mature. Step forward bravely, boldly, and with all of your knowledge and maturity, shaping a future for yourselves and your own by building on the bedrock that is our American Heritage. Cherish your Bill of Rights by guaranteeing the same to all others. My personal congratulations to you on the occasion of your commencement and my prayer that the effort you invested in your future while at Smithfield High School will be returned to you in multiples of success, prosperity, and happiness. Hunt ADVISORS: Miss Griffin, Mr. G. Reilly An Advisor’s Afterword . . . ANVIL ’69 is the product of many long and diligent hours of labor by the Yearbook staff. The book represents over 2,300 man-hours of preparation, including basic design, lay-out, reporting, photographic sessions, cover design, the writing and typing of copy, headlines and captions, advisors’ rejections and corrections, proofreading, and the collection of subscriptions and advertising to underwrite the entire venture. Once completed, the finished product is the culmination of a massive effort which can rise or fall depending on how successful each of the elements of composition has been. ANVIL ' 69 has overcome the greatest obstacle of all — a financial burden. Since the Yearbook is a non-funded, extracurricular activity, it must be totally financed by students, friends, parents, and businessmen from the Town. But more must be done! ANVIL 70 must not be allowed to labor under the burden of debt. You as a student, friend, parent, or businesman should come forth willingly to assist us in this worthy endeavor. It is only witi your help that the Yearbook can continue to thrive as a pictorial reflection of school life at Smithfield High. Remember — it is you who determines our success or failure, our rise or fall. ANVIL ’69 represents a new mode of thought in yearbook design. Its contemporary styling is evident after a look at the modernistic approach to material presented. The book revolves around the core idea of “THE YEAR,” with subsequent photo essays for each major ingredient of “THE YEAR.” The theme is reinforced with a pictorial calendar, pointing out that school life and the passage of time is ever so brief and inextricably interwoven. Other changes are noticeable in the senior section with the addition of a senior directory and carefully chosen candids of seniors to complement their formal portraits in a relaxed fashion. The faculty are not pictured in a separate section but, rather, with their students. This was a natural choice reflecting school life as it really is. Other changes will evidence themselves as your pore over the pages. Let an open mind be your guide and expect the unexpected, for, after all, isn’t that what “THE YEAR” is all about? Work has already begun on new surprises for ANVIL 70. We ask only for your continued support in any way and every way possible. MORE BOOSTERS MR. MRS. HUBERT PAQUETTE MR. MRS.
