Jill Ker Conway President Every year as Fall arrives we are all given fresh energy for life as we watch the arrival of the Freshman Class. There is no faculty member, no Dean, no Kingsman. no housekeeper who does not feel renewed by these lively faces marching behind mountains of forms and books as freshman orientation unfolds. Four year later, we are all swept with nostalgia, not for. but with you. as you prepare to leave. The transformation of those four years is remarkable to all those privileged to observe it and to participate in it. The slightly manic freshman energy becomes focused and harnessed to an adult purpose, the eager curiosity about people becomes a secure reliance on a tried network of friends. The aimless competitiveness becomes the inner drive to compete against oneself. The ebullient sounds of freshmen give way to choirs and Smith songs. All these changes are caught up and held firmly for an instant in the ritual of Ivy Day. Like Ivy Day. this book with its photographs will give visual form to many parts of the journey begun in your four years at Smith. The book and the photographs will also tell you what only slowly dawns on Smith seniors. One may travel in many directions away from this campus at the end of one's senior year, but one never really departs from Smith, even when bags are packed, station wagons overloaded, tickets bought. There is a curious departure from supposedly universal laws to be observed as we see each class set out on its next life — stage for the energy they take with them somehow flows back to sustain those who follow behind. With them, we bid you Godspeed and prepare for your speedy return. 18
