■ canii nultou MADELEINE 1982 Smith College Northampton, Massachusetts She sent out for those short, plump little cokes called 'petites madeleines' ... I raised to my lips a spoonful of the tea in which I had soaked a morsel of the cake. No sooner had the warm liquid, and the crumbs with it, touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, intent on the changes that were taking place. An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses ... Undoubtedly what is thus palpitating in the depths of my being must be the image, the visual memory which, being linked to that taste, has tried to follow it into my concious mind ... And suddenly, the memory returns.” We hope the 1982 Madeleine will serve to awaken many joyous memories of Smith in the years to come. 2 Marcel Proust. Swann’s Way, trans. Inc., 1928), pp.34-36. 3 6 L31 7 8 9 10 k 11 13 14 Table of Contents Faculty and Administration 17 Sports 41 Activities 61 Living 93 Senior Index 274 Patrons and Sponsors 277 Advertisements 280 16 17 FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION Jill Ker Conway President Every year as Fall arrives we are all given fresh energy for life as we watch the arrival of the Freshman Class. There is no faculty member, no Dean, no Kingsman. no housekeeper who does not feel renewed by these lively faces marching behind mountains of forms and books as freshman orientation unfolds. Four year later, we are all swept with nostalgia, not for. but with you. as you prepare to leave. The transformation of those four years is remarkable to all those privileged to observe it and to participate in it. The slightly manic freshman energy becomes focused and harnessed to an adult purpose, the eager curiosity about people becomes a secure reliance on a tried network of friends. The aimless competitiveness becomes the inner drive to compete against oneself. The ebullient sounds of freshmen give way to choirs and Smith songs. All these changes are caught up and held firmly for an instant in the ritual of Ivy Day. Like Ivy Day. this book with its photographs will give visual form to many parts of the journey begun in your four years at Smith. The book and the photographs will also tell you what only slowly dawns on Smith seniors. One may travel in many directions away from this campus at the end of one's senior year, but one never really departs from Smith, even when bags are packed, station wagons overloaded, tickets bought. There is a curious departure from supposedly universal laws to be observed as we see each class set out on its next life — stage for the energy they take with them somehow flows back to sustain those who follow behind. With them, we bid you Godspeed and prepare for your speedy return. 18 Kenneth Hall McCartney Dean of the Faculty and Acting President Fall 1981 Wendy Glasgow Winters Dean of the College 19 20 (l-r) Patricia Olmsted, Marilyn Schuster, Susan Van Dyne Class Deans Anthony M. The club sponsors various activities such as clinics. horse shows during Parents' Weekend and Commencement, intramural competitions and trdil rides on Mountain Day. The Smith College Choir and the Glee Club are headed respectively by Colleen Scherkenbach and Anne Gerber. Both are conducted by Theodore Morrison. The mem- SMITH COLLEGE CHOIR bership of each organization is selected based on an audition. The Smith College Choir is composed mostly of sophomores and the Glee Club of juniors and seniors. These two choirs, as is traditional, entertain the Smith community on a number of occasions throughout the year, including Convocation and Vespers. Each organization also sponsors trips to sing at neighboring schools ond invites other choirs to sing at Smith. GLEE CLUB The Energy Foundation, headed by Mary Beth Cassedy. examines the changing energy needs of our world and society. They sponsor activities that will promote awareness of the situation. ENERGY FOUNDATION The Aslan Students Association is co-directed by Jean Chin and Selina Yoon. The Membership of the A.S.A. is open to any member of the student body, interested in helping to promote Asian awareness. The association in addition to their regular meetings has sponsored several films. The Aikido Club is headed by Sheryl White, and instructed by faculty member Mutsuko Minegishi. The Club meets several times weekly to allow for wide participation. Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense which causes the opponents own momentum to work against him or her. ASIAN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION ■ The Ceramics Club is headed by Debbie Ostrow. They do their work in a fully equipped studio located at 25B Henshaw (right behind Davis). Any student interested in pursuing the art of pottery CERAMICS CLUB and sculpture can attend one of the two open studio hours a week. The dub encourages members to share instructions, ideas and companionship. People at any level of experience ore encouraged to join. The Athletic Association, headed by Grace Homor. has essentially two branches, one involved with intramural sports and the other with intercollegiate sports. It is a very large organization with representa- tives from most every house on campus. The wide variety of activities sponsored by the A.A. provides the student body with constructive ways to use their energies and have a good time. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Smith chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, chaired by Nicki Tol- NAACP left, has sponsored several speakers this year, including Althea Sims of the Washington chapter. Gold Key President of Central Board — Libby Cole Gold Key consists of 250 volunteer guides selected to give tours to prospective students. GOLD KEY BOARD The Grecourt review, edited by Kathleen McDonald, is a literary magazine designed to provide an outlet for creative writing at Smith and within the community. The magazine also publishes GRECOURT REVIEW artwork and photographs. The Grecourt review does not limit its activities to published works. This spring the organization sponsored a series of poetry readings. The Film Alliance, headed by Karen Currie, often finds itself confused with the Motion Picture Committee. Their purposes however are different. The Film Alliance tries to bring into the Smith Community a variety of films which could be considered more as works of art. They remind us that the cinema is not only for our entertainment but also a place to learn. The Black Students' Alliance at Smith, headed by Emilie Phillips, has a large membership and is open to the entire student body. Their many activities include sponsoring lecturers, films and other events which will promote Black Awareness on our campus. The Freshman Choir Alpha is one of two Freshman choirs at Smith. This year the choir, under president Susan Livingston, sang at many of Smith's traditional functions and provided a great way for students to meet one another. BLACK STUDENTS' ALLIANCE FRESHMAN CHOIR ALPHA The Freshman Choir Omega, headed by Gabrielle Rus-somagno. consists of approximately fifty-five members. They practice weekly under the direction of Ms. Malorie Schemin. Omega sings frequently at chapel services of all denominations. They also had an exchange with the West Point choir in the early spring. Amy Kirkhoff is the head of the newly chartered Noteables. The sixteen member a coppella choir joins the ranks of the longer estab- lished singing groups at Smith. This year's preview of their abilities indicates that the group's pressence will be a welcome one. FRESHMAN CHOIR OMEGA This year the Smlffenpoofs, headed by Tina Andrews and Jane Curtis, treated the Smith community to a Jamboree in mid February. The fourteen member group hosted the Yale Wiffenpoofs and the Princeton Nassoons on this occasion. The 'Poofs' also performed for private gatherings both at Smith and other colleges. The Smtttiereens cap- tured our hearts this year by singing Valentine wishes to students on campus. In addition. the group, led by Laura Voss, traveled and entertained various audiences in the area. With twelve members. the Smithereens are the smallest of Smith's a cappella choirs. The size however, is no drawback to the quality of their music. SMIFFENPOOFS r i The Senate at Smith is divided into sections by area. Each area's activities are headed by an area chairwoman. This year the chairwomen were: Mary Ellen Morgan. Lisa Sankowski. Cather- ine Hay. Laura Resnic. Debbie Zeltzer. C.K. Purks. Jennifer Bock. Tammy Baldwin and Lori Beth Cohn. Kendra Tot-lackson, vice-president of the SGA, conducted the Senate meetings. Senate secretaries Tracy Sereteon and Meredith Young each served half year terms. There were many issues this year which the Senate addressed at open discussion forums. Senators examined the revised academic honor board code, the new academic Grievance Policy and a new set of campaign procedures governing campus elections. ADA SENATORS CENTER CAMPUS SENATORS GREEN ST. SENATORS The Senate also carried out the usual duties such as approving charters for new organizations, running campus elections and holding budget hearings. Special projects taken on by the Senate this year included Spirit Week and Environmental Week. The Cabinet, headed by SGA President Dori Berinstein, works closely with the Senate in many respects. The Cabinet consists of fourteen members. Included are the SGA president and vice-president, secretary of the Senate, head of house presidents, chair of the Academic Honor Board, chair of the Curriculum Committee, chair of Rec Council, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, class presidents and the Cabinet secretary and treasurer. PROSPECT ST. SENATORS BEDFORD TER. SENATORS QUAD II SENATORS CABINET am The Academic Honor Board, chaired by Leslie Brooks, spent many hours this fall revising the honor code; much of the old wording was considered vague and out- dated. By keeping the honor code in a workable form, the board aims at preserving what the Smith community feels is a special aspect of life here. The Judicial Board has the responsibility of reviewing non-academic problems that occur within the Smith student body. The board is composed of five students elected from among the house presidents. It is choired by the head of house presidents. Elizabeth Pitney. ACADEMIC HONOR BOARD JUDICIAL BOARD The Women’ Resource Center, located on the third floor at Davis student center, is coordinated by Silvia Glick. Lori Lober, Nadine Rosenthal and Cathy Sprague. The center holds teas every Friday afternoon, and serves as on organization through which women's issues can be raised and discussed. The Student Lecture Committee is a five member organization chaired by Maria Gavris. Along with other organiza- ■ tions on campus, the lecture committee invites a variety of speakers to bring their viewpoints to Smith. WOMEN'S RESOURCE CENTER Every year the Madeleine staff assembles a collection of photographs and copy in order to document the passing of another year at Smith. The 1982 co-editors-in-chief MADELEINE are Jill Baron and Anne Ackerman. Smith's bi-weekly newspaper, the Sophlan, is edited by Julie Rosson. In addition to keeping us informed of the community news, the Sophian provides the students with a forum for expressing their opinions about issues of concern to them. The Sophian meets the demands of a sizeable and di- verse community by including such features as Happenings in the Valley and news of administrative and student activities. rhe Science Fiction Club of Smith is closely affiliated with he Sci Fi Club at the University Df Massachusetts. The members participate in games of dungeons and Dragons and Traveller. They also make use of the UMASS science fiction library. The New Current, edited by Anne Downer, will be publishing their seventh volume this year. The magazine provides us with a view that, unlike most of our student publications, is not specifically restricted to the college ex- perience. By dealing with a broad range of subjects, the New Current provides student readers with a taste of the 'real world'. SCIENCE FICTION CLUB nEW CURRENT Smith's Russian Club, coordinated by Amy Goodhart, seeks students with any interest or background in Rus- sian language or history. Through movies, lectures and other events, the Russian Club hopes to give the Smith community the opportunity to experience Russian culture. Smith College Lesbian Alliance — Not pictured: Susan, Susan, Susan etc. RUSSIAN CLUB LESBIAN ALLIANCE The Changeringers can tell you that it takes more than a little muscle to ring the bells at femith. There is a technique to it that requires practice to master. The Changeringers. led by Mary Johnson, meet in the upper reaches of Mendleson bell tower in the Performing Arts Center to practice their skills. WRSC, the Smith College Radio Station, under the direction of Martha South-gate, provides an opportunity for a large number of music fans to share their appreciation with the college community. WRSC hopes to expand its range of listeners in the future by switching over to the more powerful FM frequency. WRSC 82 83 84 85 86 87 89 Rally Day The first Rally Day was observed in 1876, as a reception to honor George Washington's birthday. Over the years, songs and patriotic addresses were added to the festivities, and in 1894 Rally Day acquired its present name. This year's 106th Rally Day showed that Smith Spirit is alive and well. The day began with the awarding of Smith Medals to distinguished alumnae, and an inspiring address by Professor William E. Leuchtenburg, a Smith Trustee. The seniors took advantage of their first opportunity to wear their robes, and everyone looked forward to the annual Rally Day Show that night. The first group to perform were the Ada Comstock Scholars, and there wasn't a dry eye in the audience during the sentimental finale to their story of Ada Doolittle. The Freshmen were next, with a rousing version of the soon-to-be- famous musical, Smithie . A Sophomore Carol showed the delighted audience the nightmares of surviving sophomore slump. The Juniors' Night at Nielson was a humorous (and harmonious) tribute to the frustrations of an ever-expanding library. The marvelous Senior show rounded out the wonderful evening with a musical slide show , narrated by the incomparable Nancy Whitehouse. Rally Day 1982 is over, but the joyous strains of Sophie will remain in our minds throughout the years to come. 92 93 LIVING 95 96 97 98 99 ADA COMSTOCK SCHOLARS 100 Beki Mahieu English Joy Sikorski Studio Art 101 English American Studies Joan Gordon Government 102 Laurel Lynn Koch Education Nancy Champoux English Bert Smith Fields Afro-American Studies Christine S.
