Make your home up there in the sky And be jumping with Hodes jive, Or would you rather be a MULE and go to school? A MULE is a freshman with long funny cars. She believes everything she hears, Her face is funny and ner manner is green. She's got plenty of men, yet she storms the Canteen! Now if she learns to drink beer and smoke a cig She may grow up to be a PIG. A PIG is a Sophomore who knows all the tricks Instead of the I.ibe, she haunts the flicks. She sleeps through breakfast and cuts every class And then wonders how she'll ever pass. Rut a few days of cramming and then swish— She goes right on to be a FISH. A FISH is a Junior who is a B.G.O.C. She heads everything from A to Z, S.C.D.R. and S.O.C. S.C.A.—and our friend J.B. Rut though she's climbed up the ladder very high— She hasn't yet approached the sky— For she would like to be 45 And make her home up there in the sky— And be jumping with Hodes jive— Ah, yes, we're sure you will arrive— Just style yourself on '451! 1945 '45 has led a rugged life. From peace and plenty to war and strife; And so it's constantly we're in a haze. The routine's gone so many ways. We've seen pigtails and politics, and long pearls too. Double-deckers and l) Day. the Dean's debut; And lacking faculty advisers, we were led Right in where angels feared to tread. Freshman year—oh how it hurts— Those single men in lovely red converts; Weekends spent with Eli too. With plenty of gas and plenty of brew. But in spots the year was tough. The quarantine made social life a bluff, Feverishly we fought the plague of 42. And then the tempo waxed irregular, crazier. Domestic problems really made us wield a wicked broom. And dust the archives—what housewives! And now we’ve seen our clientele decrease. The Waves give up their temporary lease; No whipped cream, no caloric book, We miss our Seales, but we love our Cook! Yes, who's seen it all from the Bible to Scan, From the Alma Mater to the Smifrs “Oh What a Man ? Who breezed in, who’s gone with the wind— It’s ’45! 158 CLASS HISTORY Freshman and Sophomore Years “We look a train to Northampton, long ago in the fall, The S.C.A. met us. They'll never forget us, about 600 in all. Freshman year is memorable as the era of the Tavern, Amherst, the five cent cup of coffee, ana an abundance of cigarettes. While still nestled in pre-Pearl Harbor lethargy, wc heard Hamm Fish debate at the Progressive Forum, Resolved, that the defeat of Germany is necessary to the Americas”, and W. H. Chamberlain discuss the Russian Enigma”. Late permissions became effective, and wc were pleased with four a semester. Wc can remember congregating at the watchman's garage by Capcn to be driven back to our respective houses. Marriages and engagements were still considered outstanding phenomena. Heat cops and light cops were introduced to conserve fuel, and Grass cops continued to be effective in conserving grass and preventing streamlined shorts and blue jeans. Bandcrlog created Ladies on the Loose , Carl Becker occupied the Ncilson chair, and Rachmaninoff played in the concert scries. Mountain Day was a credit to the President; nature was enjoyed in field and stream, as well as at Yale, Amherst, and Harvard. This was the year of Windswept; the first year of Sophia's Circus in which the wind on the athletic field blew down all the exhibits. Norman Thomas came to Smith and asked if all the pictures hanging in the Tavern were of Smith Alumnae. Uniforms were novelties, and a poll taken revealed that the majority of Smith girls were unwilling to take a bus to Amherst for dates instead of being called for in private cars. Brain waves were recorded in Lilly, a strike, maid trouble, and liquidation of Taller. The immortal Hygiene Ila song.-inhibition and malnutrition, marriage proposals and sewerage disposal, lighting defects and sex, sex, sex,— became a campus classic. Great turmoil was caused by Franksgiving and a discussion of State rights. The S.C.D.R. was formed and Scan reported the creation of a SPECIAL SOCIAL CHAIRMAN FOR BORED AND DATELESS GIRLS. Pearl Harbor,-On December 9, the college in mass meeting voted to send a resolution to President Roosevelt pledging full support of the war. The first blackout was in April with the possibility of bombing too real for comfort. Scarlet fever, mumps, and measles put us in quarantine on Campus with a post-office in Scclyc. Wc missed the good movies, but got wonderful curb service from Green Street. Spring came, bringing with it spring fever, long bicycle rides, afternoons spent on Paradise, authorized sun bathing on Scott and Alumnae and unautnorized sunbathing everywhere. See America First was the theme of float night-one boat tipped and another drifted to the other side of the pond proving that the class of '45 had little experience with canoeing. Sophomore year the tempo increased with the accent definitely on the war. The Waves rolled into Northhampton and Smith rolled into double decker beds. The air armada of B 2-1's from Wcsiover roared over campus and smaller planes made power dives on the quad. 19-12 brought to Smith a new Dean with “A l arger for Tonight ; a world prevue of “Hitler's Children in Sage: Wrens, Spars, Australians, and even Scotch kilts from the Black Watch Regiment. Tom left Rahars: Wc gave our bicycles to the Waves and our blood to the Red Cross. The Physical Education Department inaugurated a “Vitality for Victory campaign and wc bruised ourselves up in the commando test when wc tried to climb over those pianos in Scott. Wc went onion planting, apple picking, and got poison ivy. The calendar was changed to accommodate Smith's conversion to a wartime schedule and exams were before Christmas. Wc still found time for carolling and the fifteen moveable feasts terminating with the traditional Quad sing. Sophomore Carnival went Russian, and the class also lent its talents to Factory Follies with Make with the Maximum highly acclaimed in neighbouring war plants. Mr. Kotschnig wrote Slaves Need No Leaders and the faculty produced victory gardens and a hilarious version of Trial by Jury.” House work became volunteer and remunerative, spring vacation consisted of a week-end given only as a second thought. A poll taken at the end of the year showed that the Sophomore class had more fraternity pins than any other class with Amherst the favorite college. With snow still on the ground in April, the question of acceleration with emphasis on Work or Train came up. 536 planned to do just like your brothers all do, and 319 enrolled at the first Smith Summer school. The Flying Club's Bird of Paradise burned; Hubbard House had their fathers to Spring Dance as wc put more and more APO numbers in our address books. Mrs. Roosevelt worked Smith into My Day’ on her Wave inspection itinerary. Plans were made for the summer as conflicting calls arose from books, soil, and machines. At step-sing this became “Too refractory for the factory, we'll go out to the farms and bring the farmers back alive. 159 Junior and Senior Years In 1965 when wc’rc gathered under that well-known clock and pleading for just one more Smith song over our Pink Ladies, we won't remember that in the beginning of Junior year we numbered -149, and in Senior year 328. indicating that along the wayside had dropped 121. But we will remember that though Albert was in Greenland and Mortimer was on the shores of Montezuma, we could always find Louie at the Canteen having peachy fun. We'll remember that some of us got eager and graduated in 3 years thus creating a schism. And how the rest of us carried the torch high and told ourselves in clear, bell-like tones that we didn't even missem. As a matter of fact they had a very fine time indeed because when they weren't swimming at Look Park to break the monotony. They were drinking beer with their friends on the faculty providing they got any. We'll remember Sandburg and the boll weevil and Mathicssen and James and the happy addition to the music department of the happy Mr. Brosa, And as for novelties will we never forget the influx of the French Navy or being buzzed by our own B-17 on its overseas flight a la cosmopolitan? No sah. Late permissions were changed from a system whereby instead of everybody standing outside for 2 hours, one poor sucker stood inside for 2 hours but on the whole the system was all right because you knew the watchmen wasn't watching. Also a lady in Schcncctary wrote a book called The Cauliflower Heart all about Smith which some people didn't like but we found kind of touching. Here------- Comes Senior Year!!! We had Sophia's Circus and naturally for the purpose of getting a lot of money. Those of you who didn’t see M. Guillcton and M. Guict vacuuming the rugs at Wilder House, and Miss Chase and Miss Duckett and the Larkins and Mrs. Cook being domestic, well it was pretty funny. Then there was a hurricane which didn't turn out to be as bad as the one which we had had previously. There was also an election which turned out the same way elections have been turning out for the past 12 years which we thought was fine but which annoyed some people grievously. Dickinson House burned and everybody's belongings either got consumed by the fire, or the firemen turned their hoses on them and got them all wet. So although we were very sorry to see the Waves go it was a very convenient time for this to happen and all the destitute Dickinsonitcs promptly moved into Gillctt. Because President Davis in 1941 had pledged the support of the college regarding all war activities including any OPA regulation— No Vacation. So after we finish our Pink Ladies and assure all our matronly friends that they are keeping their collective figures amazingly well. We decide we must do this again sometime and then we get to the station in plenty of time to catch the 5:17 local back to the husband and the kiddies in New Rochelle. •• In passing we'd like to tender profuse apologies to Mr. Ogden Nash and friends Like coming home to dinner with hash and friends. 160 Tiffany Co.
