Song Leader cJ. Is it weakness of intellect, birdie?'' 1 cried. Or a rather tough worm in your little in-side? With a shafy of his poor little head he replied. Oh. willow, titwillow, titwillow! FRESHMAN YEAR Wc entered some years and months ago, 477 bashful young potatoes believing in free will and freedom, faced unwittingly with adjustment. Other classes faced with adjustment have submitted or revolted dramatically, but a subtle control of the dramatic let the Class of '36 take root of its own accord before rigidly aligned, and thereafter to grow both ways unadjusted. The best parts, in the manner of potato plants, stayed underground because the Class of '36 even in youth did not flaunt, and they have stayed there in wild, dark abundance, because wc arc saving them for our little homes. Above ground the plants lifted their lovely young blossoms to a wet winter, and met life (you will admit it felt like life) protected from bugs by a full year of Hygiene 11. When a bug happened to bite, the succulent victim, like any freshman, went to the infirmary. Here she smoked a thermometer, rolled on three kinds of crumbs, cracker, cookie, and dog biscuit, and broadened her acquaintance. Or perhaps from the fragrance of Burton other bugs rose to bite her until she was seen standing on her head to isolate her sense impressions, or creeping around the dustiest parts of the Library looking up English 11 references, or heard muttering things like ‘In 451 the Roman defeated the Hun at the Battle of Chalons!' Or strangely enough she developed a predilection for foreign flickers like A {ous La Liberte. and flicks of any sort on Friday nights when nobler souls stood freezing on the roof of the Observatory, and the professor lifted her fine nose, but not her hand, toward the conjunction of Mars and Venus. Bugs, however, bite minorities: it is more difficult to describe the activities of the whole. They were generally purple in hue, and ineffectually violent, or completely colorless, and meagerly attended in spite of the righteous pleas of class officers. They were interrupted by a continual succession of emergencies which began with curtains and a roommate’s peculiar style of beauty, and has never ended. If a first long paper does not seem an emergency, things arc seldom what they seem. More than one has been copied in sections by three people, and has been delivered indecipherable but complete within a minute of the dead line, or misery me, too late. Consider your first Hamp bill, the first Charity Ball, the first poverty dinner, the bank holiday, the strikes in the mills. The President was away three months, and wc broke out after ten with the Quad bell ringing when he came back. Mr. Bixlcr played the part of a bride in the Rally Day Show. A last remnant of the faculty sat on the platform at chapel daily. Wc ruined our feet, were soaked in music, and absorbed into the house hierarchy of interests. The latter usually amounted to something extraordinarily vital like painting flats twelve hours in two days, or learning how to play lacrosse in open hours. We read too much outside of our classes, learned the vocabulary of the Plvm or the Fireside, received warnings, drank cokes, and thought wc had rather fine minds. Bv the time the Connecticut had flooded the onion fields, and the upper classes had suffered their first reading period, we were no longer bashful young potatoes, but sophomores. There are any number of newspapers around the corner, longing to catch us looking pink, or even red. Then let us admit, with the principle of keeping little hands busy, that while the lethargic majority were sophomores of the most determined description, the elan vital was radical. Most of the class with bovine serenity signed the D.A. apprentice list, wrote unappreciated literary gems for Press Board and Weekly, and made the Second Soccer Team. When the newly acquired Wednesday full chapel clapped us out we were proud and modest, and privately impressed with our personalities (which sometimes included the minority). Or more likely, we did not display our talents to the proletariat, but saved them for obscure organizations given to bleating at old jokes, talking in dialects, preempting a particular table, and saving five seats in .each class. There were the S.G.tfG.'s, the Gutter Club, the Mad Regals, which were very funny, and a hundred other spontaneous manifestations of the gang spirit. We took all our nights, and made Social Dean's List. We had cream at the Fruit Farm, and possibly, but not positively, mind you, something at Rahar's. Before fire ropes, and during ten o'clock soup at mid-years, we gave the freshmen sad and sodden sympathy. The President doubted our veracity publicly, in the traditional way, because we were sophomores; the freshmen, perspicacious creatures, had not listened to us at all. In the middle of exams we gave a peerless Carnival, which is greatly to our credit. It was so cold the falls froze, and never a drop of Paradise (well hardly ever) escaped to cheer the ducks below, and even the minority was forced by sordid circumstance into flannel leggings. Surely this was culture's palmiest day—the kind represented by the reconstruction of Hillycr, and the kind played at the table in preparation for Miss Chase's Hardy writtens. We were familiar with the faculty to the point of taking them out to tea, and borrowing their trousers for the Rally Day Show. If this were not superlatively palmy we could recall the fine points of the three K's Cradle Song, the Northampton Players Saint Joan, and Mr. Hall in The Bacchae. It is obvious we appreciated and cooperated, and were model sophomores with the right attitude. But a minority was distinguished. Since our believing youth there had been a migration of the elite from philology to sociology, and all that sort of thing. The political furor of the year before had poisoned their minds, and under the very shadow of that now extinct bird, the blue eagle, they began the insidious American habit of improving themselves, and the world. Naturally they were involved in some of the ordinary activities of the class, like paying the new Blanket Tax, and failing the new minor reading tests. It is also difficult to conceive of great numbers of runners for Prom without the elite. But on the whole they sat in a dull, dark dock, like Toto's, plotting the revolution of the American school system, and lamenting the ignorance of their colleagues. For the first anti-war demonstration, for the Model League, for I.R.C. and Why Club, our incipient radicals emerged. We display them here in the place of emphasis because we shall not mention them again, but wish to imply their continuation. They are ample enough unadvertised, as young women are liable to be when leading sheltered lives in Judge Dewey's apple orchard, and suffering luncheons of macaroni and fried bananas, with pancakes for desert. f9S] ICPI1CMCPE CARNIVAL 1934 [961 SCPHCMCEE PUSH COMMITTEE Phoebe Weed Elsie Mattis Evelyn Voorhees Anne Tuck Phoebe Flory Lesley Corbett Marjorie Hewitt Anne Ocilby Helen Allen Janet Smith Leonora Parsons Mary Holt Harriet Linen Mariana Taylor Priscilla Smith Elizabeth Bradley Emily Jones Mary Cole Mary Louise Eldred Suzanne Warriner Ruth Tyler Helen Hancock Ettie Len Toy Chin Emily Lincoln Jane O'Brian Gertrude Dale Julia Wilhelmi Georgia McCacue Kathleen Evans Grace McIlvaine Jane McKendree Ruth Quimby Faith Bumstead Mary Knoblauch Elizabeth Proctor Mary Adele Halsey Dorothy Mullins [97] Junior My poor child, you don't understand these things. JUNIOR yCAR On the face of things, a junior's life is not a happy one. It begins with the realization that age and grade no longer carry distinction, continues with one impacted wisdom-tooth after another, and ends as a colorful background for the sentimental mcandcrings of seniors. There are often ants in ivy chains. But the capacity for innocent enjoyment of the Class of 1936 was impaired by none of these. It is, as you may have gathered, a remarkable class, with inner resources, and it proceeded in its own quiet way to enjoy them. Ants, teeth, and even the realization of the beginning of years and years of afternoon are, all in all, ephemeral in comparison to the eternal knowledge that there are striped crocuses by the names of Madame Minna, pale, and Oscar, very dark. We learned this our junior year when we took Home Gardening as an antidote to medievalism (not to the Mr. Charlie Patch who sells bittersweet along Elm Street). A number of things facilitated our pursuit of happiness. In the first place no one but Miss Cook, who is infallible, knew we were juniors. Some of us were mistaken for sophomores because we continued to move in herds and save seats by rows, some for seniors because we were earnest, conscientious damsels with fixed ideas of what was what. The rest of us escaped observation. We may have muffled our titwillows in the depths of the library, that den of must and silence, the Religion Seminar, where we had wandered in mild distress at the state of our minds after the activism of our sophomore year. Or wc may have retired to the top of the College Hall tower to have solemn thoughts about the bliss of solitude, and to write bitter verse. Never let it be said, however, that the Class of 1936 was obvious about poetry. In spite of the Ballad Sheets it was not obvious enough to produce reverberations. As a whole we lived—and lived incognito, taking advantage of the new twelve o'clock rule, or the shortcut through the schoolyard where the nuns pace at night. Ancnt the latter, we may have been going to teach at the Institute. Rivera fresco and Gertrude Stein add to inner resources: a stein is a stein is a stein is a mug versus description in time as well as space. Wc arc glad we died in combat glory to hear the discussion between Mile. Sturm and the President. Our decision concerning the President's edition of Webster’s International Dictionary is unanimous. It is but one part of an esteem echoed by France, who gave him the Cross of the Legion of Honor. It was our Junior year that the three new squash courts were built, and the Flying Club began faltering over the Connecticut valley. Mr. Kelly retired to Sage and Sam Bothwcll became Campus Cop. There was a fire in Sessions, and clear ice on Paradise. We gave a Prom without rain, and runners made our beds. Some of us went on week-ends, some sent our best clothes. We knew our friends so well that our communistic reputations, in the eyes of our mothers, grew from the resultant mixture of name tapes. A great many were bridesmaids at intervals, and became increasingly conscious that the town of Jonathan Edwards, like Cranford, is in the possession of Amazons. Wc took no exercise for a month at a time, carried pillows to the library, escaped posture pictures, for once, and developed wrinkles on our high foreheads from the will to endure. In retrospect this was the longest year of the four, a mental sheepshank, with little restriction in comparison to the past, and no uncertainty towards the future. With pins on our last good sweater, we were destined to fill our Group Requirements and be seniors. 001} SOPUCNNE GROUP 1934-1935 Baclfc Row: Eugenic Ratterman, Lucianna Gladney, Cloyce Campbell, Kathryn Coleman, Ivria Adlcrblum, Elisc Gettier, Frances Bloome, Elizabeth Pollock. We were going to integrate our knowledge, so we could teach the young for nothing the next year, or be extraordinary secretaries to literary gentlemen, if we didn't indulge in the felicity of unbounded domesticity. All of us were women with a purpose, whether the purpose left at two minutes past ten and caught a ride back, or lay in the matter (we hope) behind a pedagogical stomp and professorial snort. There was a general confusion of the end and the means to the end; we could rattle facts off to a popular tunc, and began to fancy ourselves in a University of London cap and gown or French fur. In spite of twelve writtens, four book-reports, two term papers, and a reading test, we retained our resilience until mid-years. We had delusions of grandeur filling out Vocational Office blanks before we had a conference, and thereafter decided to give society the benefit of our well-adjusted intelligences freely in order to help the state of the world, with our hands in the dish pan, as it were, but our minds on Milton, and the way rats run through mazes when they have lost their sense of balance. It is not surprising that the faculty was pleased to recommend us. By going to bed at ten-thirty, we were able to conserve enough energy to uphold our own good name and that of the college until January. In January, when the book we were supposed to read during reading period went into hiding, we thought we wouldn't graduate. In February our parents paid our graduation fees and settled the question. In March we almost flunked our last posture picture as a result of twelve more writtens, four book-reports, three term papers, and a reading test. And in April we passed the reading test! Probably a blind public will make this our claim to fame: we were the last class to take two reading tests, and not to have the free unit system. Only the Dean’s Biblical condolences could have kept us from having a persecution complex, if we had been another class, but we ask posterity to remember that we were the only class whose goldfish stayed at the President’s during vacation. This, and other positive distinctions which we do not mention because we arc by nature modest, cancel the negative ones. While the Class of 1936 was making sedentary history, the college advanced obviously. It built the Cheese Box through rain, sleet, blizzards, floods, mud, and heat. (We were the last class not to live in it.) The winter was too cold for a carnival, and the well-rounded underclasses, for whom the new dormitory was built, wore ski-pants on all occasions: for examinations, teas, and traveling. (We were the last class not to wear ski-pants to Spring Dance.) They wore ski-boots through the following rains, without ski-pants, and conceived a revolution in the next year’s faculty soccer game. There was a German House for the first time. The members sang too much Dorf Musik to remain normal, and now progress by skipping, which distinguishes them from the common herd. None of these innovations could disturb our overwhelming sense of familiarity. Foolish, weak, but amiable old things, we submitted to the increasing momentum of the usual events: Float Night, the last step-sing, examinations. We succored our wardrobes with caps and gowns, carried roses in our medieval hands, and pinned our Juniors. When we graduated we remembered to change our tassels. As you leave us do believe us Thirty-five. Smith will always claim you. Though your work here ends. We will still remember you As senior friends. Through the years we have no fears Of your success: That your dreams and well-planned schemes Will all progress. Seniors though you'll soon throw Thoughts of youth away. Remember this with deep regret Our saddest day. In cap and gown you've won renown For thirty-five. Without display you've found your way Oh thirty-five. You've left the senior steps now For thirty-six to fill. And memories of former years Will linger still. As we try to profit by Examples past, Yours will lie we all agree The best though last. Yours the joys of future Ours the parting tear. Still wc hope with next year's turn To find you here. This can't convey our thoughts today A song won't do. The time draws nigh to say goodbye But not adieu. Our ways may soon lx parting. In time they'll meet again And since we know you'll soon return, Here's luck till then! [227] AIMA HATER i To you, O Alma Mater, O Mother, groat and true. From all your loyal children, Comes up the song anew. Where swings the red sun upward. Where sinks he down to rest. Are hearts that backward turning Still find you first and best. Chorus And gladly singing to you always Our loyal hearts with joy shall fill. O fairest, fairest Alma Mater, You hold and claim us still. II You gave us dreams unnumbered, And life we had not known, And now, O Alma Mater, We give you back your own. For memories, for friendships, That bless each passing day, Our toil unsought we render, Our debt unask'd we pay. Chorus And gladly singing to you always, Our loyal hearts with joy shall fill. ART DEPARTMENT: It Takes a Stigma to Beat a Dogma — a sensational expose' of Modern Art by Thomas Cave-in. Every sophisticate, at some peak, is faced with the problem of deciding for [230] himself whether art can lv propagation or propagation art. Nobody can help you here girls. THE DEPARTMENT OE PHYSICAL III 1.11 ION AND SPOKEN ENGLISH: The Stance of Life by Proxy Do you want to graduate from college as stooped as you came? Model yourself after your professors! Stand up to them! Ah, but 'ware how they sit. They do not adhere to one unmodified form. There is the South Bend or Pretzel School, for one. As Newton was to physics, so is our own Mr. Whitmore to this line of research. It has not yet been established whether he was the discoverer of the perilous chair-tilting technique, or whether this was a form of expression current among the ancient Britons. Recent excavations show this form of conducting class to have been practised among Piltdown, or Tiltdown, Man. (Cf. Hankins. Ch. 5). A Jung and Adlcd disciple of this school has recently contributed the celebrated Davis feet-on-dcsk-during-oflice-hours strut. He was assisted in his research by a tasty grey lounge suit accented by an old red sweater. Clearly this calls for a sharp note to Esquire. In direct contrast, and showing that in academic circles there is still plenty of room for freedom of expression, is the semi-congealed, or Ice-Age, alluvia, represented by the Taylor-Nicolson-Hagen school. Here can Ik found interesting connotations of passive resistance. Not directly correlated with either the Pretzel or the Ice-Age is the Exhortation. Some prominent exhorters who come quickly to mind are. of course, Mr. Eliot reading Prometheus (in Greek, mind you) and Mr. Harlow . . . Editor: “We love Mr. Harlow, and you leave him alone ... Author: “In the interests of scientific research . . . Editor: You heard me . . Author: Gaggin' the press, that's what it is. Editor: That calls for a sharp not. to Mr. Roger Baldwin. STUDENT GOVERNMENT: Point System or Old Whom Weel{ by Darr Korse Politics must go! This is no ad for the Smith College Laundry, although they’ve always stood bias; rather, it is a plea for the participation of the citizen in his government. Of course if the government would rather participate in a bridge game, it's O. K. with politics. Roses and Ivy Day Dresses come to Henshaw and Quandrange alike, and I think Phyllis would make a Wonderful class president, because I was at prep school with her, and she A to ways hung her towels up straight, and even though Gwacie is just the Gwandest Girl, I think she lacks a certain, er. WPA Project Number ‘$6 to revitalize Literature Industry by substituting yokel talent for the inner oligarchy. Tryouts were held in the Alpha room of Stude at 7:30. A mad throng of eight seniors jammed the building. Four of these went by the name of Bev Cellar. The three administrators of the contest, by unanimous vote, delegated the task of cairying on American literature to themselves, to Bess, and to a dark horse in a choir robe and mortarboard, later identified as Kay Ottick. The first to be hauled away by the double-jointed arm of the law wa Thomas Wolfe. A long rope of verbiage trickled solemnly, majestically, portentiously and sonorously out of the corners of his mouth like a fervent band of pilgrims trudging flow-footedly across Asia. Smith College. he said, is a big sprawling ivy-covered horse of a college. As I stand here on the top of the Observatory, slowly freezing to death: the cold creeping up the bowed legs, the thewed thighs, the valvular heart, I remember Anne. Life ran high in Anne. Anne ran out on me in high. With a splintering crash in staggered J. C. Furnas covered with confusion And Sudden Death. It was like this. he said, sometimes it happens with the simplest beginnings, the curve around the Alumnae Gym miscalculated by a squash-fiend faculty member. The unearthly shriek of ground grippers gripping the ground, with a wail of drawnout rubber. The girl on the ‘08 bicycle coming down the hill minding her own business and her own business not minding the curve. A crash as of splintering Hcrshcy Bars and the professor skids, in a perilous whirl of heated mel.il, a veritable dance of death. When the dust settles and the wreckage has been combed, it would have stopped anybody's careless driving to see the class of Thirty-Six sitting in the road, itill holding tight to the handle bars of a completely demolished bicycle, which she had borrowed anyway, staring wildly ahead, a hopeless idiot as is the professor. Interrupted this time by a horse laugh the seniors were aware of becoming involved in the horse's laughter and becoming part of it. until their teeth were only accidental lemon with a talent for grating. They were drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns underneath Students' Building. Suddenly a light glimmered and then shone brightly. How far that little candle throws its beams. Candle Hell. I'm T. S. Eliot and who was that candle 1 seen you with last light? Her name was Paula. He met her. She told him she had only eighty million dollars. He also had eighty million dollars. They could be rich together. That gave them a communion of adventure. Life, he would sometimes explain, has made a cynic of me. Paula hesitated, her dark serious beauty (from somewhere in California) enormously popular despite its primness. There is a large class of men whose egotism can't endure humor in a woman ... That's enough, Mr. F. Scott Fitzgerald. mapped the editor . We're not getting funny with you. All of a sudden Kay Ottick (you rciner.ibcr her) let out a yell. Look, I'm standing on a tombstone! I'll say you arc, snarled Edgar Lee Masters as he picked ferociously at the floor. The frightened seniors went into a huddle, out of the huddle, and read over hi shoulder (the rude little girlies): Everyone thought we were the best of friends We sat at the same table at lunch I laughed at her jokes Often we had midnight cookie and milk together She always singled me out to say good-night to We both smoked Benson and Hedges. Then one day something snapped in my head And I cut her into piece and threw her over the dam one by one. No one knew and I never regretted it. Ha Ha Smith College! This was signed Eddie, and there it lay.
