We have always been a modest, well behaved class. We are not given to bragging, but there is one point on which we claim a certain distinction. We should like to call to the attention of those interested (or those not inter- ested — after all, we have to write something about this important, but rather dimly remembered year) that we are the depression class. We have heard certain vague reverberations that the class of 1932 claimed this honor. We should like to correct that impression. It is we who, in unprecedented num- bers and with our shining resolves undimmed — (who doubts it? Of course we all had shining resolves.) Well, anyway, considering our lack of experience, we managed rather well to preserve ourselves from complete annihilation in the taxi ride from the station to our respective houses. We shall pass lightly over the first few days of our college life. Every- body has them. The President, the Dean, the Warden, and a great many other people told us what to do, and for quite a while we tried to do it. Then the novelty wore off, and we devoted ourselves to the pursuit of pleasure until mid- semesters. The registrars ' list swelled with ominous suddenness, and we began to remember a few of the things we had been told. The movie houses felt the slump, and the college had a bigger electric light bill. And then the snow set in, and we spent our time making up back work in Hygiene, and going down to the Gym three times a week to roll about on that none-too-clean floor in our new yellow rompers. We had our first class meeting, and listened with attention to eulogies of various classmates, except when we were holding forth ourselves. We found, all unsuspecting, that we had in our midst several score paragons of personality, poise, virtue, executive ability, and able leadership. We elected those whose genius along these lines seemed to burn most brightly, and trusted the responsibility of leading our class to their highly praised ability. The landmarks which distinguish the rest of this important year seem to be principally of a negative character, as, for example, the failure of the long promised and much touted Sophomore Carnival to materialize. The faculty, however, rose to superb heights in a musical drama, offering as co- stars such scintillating stage personalities as Mr. Welch, Mr. Bixler, M. Guilloton, and Miss Burnett. The year drew to a gasping close while fifty per cent of the class stayed until the last hour of the last day to take the Botany exam. Finally we loaded ourselves (alas! I confess it reluctantly) with sighs of relief into our various homeward bound trains, leaving behind a pathetic minority to enhance with their matchless voices, the effect of Illumination Night. 121] Granddaughters Victoria Allen Helen Barlow Margaret Beach Helen Bragdon Mary Brooks Valeria Burgess Janet Cairns Catharine Christie Pauline Christie Dorothy Clark Frances Cobb Janet Cobb Margaret Conklin Elizabeth Coy Virginia Daniells Margery Davis Jane Ferris Helen Fleming Bertha Floyd Elizabeth Floyd Elinor Fosdick Mary-Lucile Getchell Marjorie Ginsburg Margaret Gordon May Gould Marion Groezinger Roberta Hall Lenore Hellman Frances Horsfall Barbara Howard Eleanora Hutchinson Lois Jameson Dorothy Johnson Emily Joy Margaret Joy Frances King Anna Lacey Elizabeth Lewis Mary Lindeke Helen McDonough Ruth Macduff Janet McMullen Mary Mignot May Cristal Morison Eleanor Newhall Elizabeth Orr Elizabeth Payson Catherine Phillips Belle Pike Peggy Pitman Anne Pitts Cora Ripley Emily Robinson Jean Rockwell Helen Ross Anne Scofield Emily Sheffeld Mary Stearns Cornelia Tuttle Katrina Van Hook Elizabeth Williams Lucy Wright [122] [123] Sophomore Year OFFICERS President ELIZABETH RUDEL JANET MERRYWEATHER Vice-President JANET MERRYWEATHER LOUISE THOMAS Secretary JANE WALLIS Treasurer KATRINA VAN HOOK Council Member EDITH EUSTIS Judicial Board Member DORA WHITE Song Leader MARY DORION Assistant Song Leader LOIS JAMESON Chairman of Carnival ELINOR FOSDICK Rally Day Class Chairman MARY PAYSON Historian MARY ELIZABETH BROWN Chairman of Push Committee JEAN BABCOCK Resigned T931 [124] II. This was the year of our Sophomore Carnival. Oh yes, of course. The class proved to have several splendid skaters of the caliber of the Misses FitzGerald, Eustis, and Outerbridge, who covered themselves and their class with glory in the novel, but somewhat chilly atmosphere of the West Pole. We are having a terrible time remembering this year, but there must have been something else. There. We knew if we waited long enough, we ' d get it. It was the year which marked our first and feeblest ( feeblest, we certainly hope) efforts to pass our language tests. It was also the year in which the Student Council with admirable penetration and high seriousness, changed the driving and smoking rules, and tried desperately to keep the burning news from leaking through to the laity. It was the year too (ah, here we have it) when we began to realize that we were in college for some definite aim. You know. We looked at our more unintelligent and sportive companions with a disdainful glance which seemed to say, What did you come to college for, anyway — to play? We took Re- ligion 14 and integrated our attitudes toward religion, truth, beauty, and life in general. We stayed up late, and instructed our less perfectly integrated roommates and friends in the art of living. We assumed a prematurely solemn air, and could be seen in groups in such places as Plym or the Armchair, authoritatively airing our suggestions for improving the policy of J. B., the gym department, the faculty, and the League of Nations. We became ac- quainted with the more intellectual magazines. We thought of taking Special Honors. We flunked gym, and went to see the President. We got rather worse grades than we deserved. But most of us had already decided against Special Honors, anyway. Spring brought a spirit somewhat less serious, and a notable increase in the delegation from the men ' s colleges. It brought picnics and senior cars, and swimming for those who had cultivated their friendships with an eye to the future. It finally brought summer and finals. The other fifty per cent of the class stayed until the last hour of the last day to take the Botany exam, con- soling themselves with the thought that at least they had taken their last science course. The time had arrived when seniors had to be pushed through. 1933 came to the front with a committee of unexcelled pushers, who, with varying de- grees of pleasure counted up the total poundage lost in the effort. 125 J. Here we are again. But getting through college takes four years, and writing about it takes four pages. This was the year which marked the parting of the ways. Those among us more skilled in the various foreign tongues betook themselves across the seas, where they settled in France, Spain, Italy and, we believe, one in Ger- many. Their less linguistically inclined classmates stayed to taste the delights of junior year in the bosom of the college proper. Here they developed to the fullest extent their respective talents and inclinations. An imposing number attained such glory in scholastic pursuits as to become junior Phi Bets; namely the Misses Cobb, Brown, Cairns, Mather, Henry, Sykes, and Van Hook. Another group, too large to be listed in detail, but ably represented by the illustrious Miss Ramer, followed the none-too-primrose path to plea- sure Miss Jameson and Miss Fleming devoted their energies to making this college a better place in which to live, and to punishing those whose transgressions tended to spoil this highly desirable condition. The most important event of the year was, needless to say, Junior Prom, surpassing all previous proms, impossible to equal in the future, in short, a most epochal event. Its success was owed unconditionally to Miss Perry and her able crew of entertainers — by which neatly turned compliment we hope they feel amply rewarded for the hours they spent planning, computing, tacking, talking, decorating, and jittering about the rain. The weekend was, however, mercifully serene and even pleasant as to weather, making possible a most enormous number of out-of-town expeditions, and picnics, in the course of which the dignity which had reigned on the previous evening was discarded for a noisier hilarity. To return to the matter-of-fact, this was also the year in which we stopped taking gym. In fact we stopped indulging in any form of exercise, until the more or less disastrous results became apparent. There was no ice, but plenty of snow. Indeed some would have said a little too much snow, although there can be no doubt that it furnished many with the coveted opportunity of wearing the cherished new ski suit. Hubbard House went to chapel, and sat in the front row. The rest of us didn ' t, but speculated seriously on the reason for the decrease in chapel attendance. A small group of English majors braved the terrors of Chaucer, render- ing themselves most obnoxious by their continual habit of chanting aloud such strange sentiments as, A K-night there wass ond thot a wor-r-r-thy mon — , and This wor-r-r-ld nis but a thurgh-fare ful of wo! Commencement came with its ivy chain, and inevitable prinking (The seniors having outgrown the petty ushering stage, were not so bent on prink- ing and politeness). The embryo seniors, in pastel dresses, and triumphantly without hats, ushed their way out of the year with bows and smiles — and aches. Coming back from our respective homes and junior years abroad, we resolved to really work this year , to justify the faith placed in us by our poverty stricken parents, not to play bridge, or go to the movies, to pass our last language test — in short, to lead a sober and industrious existence, and make reasonably sure of getting the coveted sheep skin. We spent most of our time, however, filling out blanks from the Personnel Department, and trying vainly to remember the courses we had taken Fresh- man year. We canvassed the faculty for favorable recommendations, trying to select the members of that august body to whom we were something more than a mere face which appeared daily except Saturday in the third row. It also became necessary for us to make a quick decision as to which of the many kinds of paying positions for which we found ourselves so adequately prepared, we should finally select. We paid one dollar and twenty-five cents for the privilege of going to all this trouble, and tried to keep our sense of humor when told that of course there would be no jobs for us, that all this was just to prove that the college had a sympathetic attitude. We made up our minds that we would have to follow the other lines of endeavor sug- gested by the President. We had our pictures taken, and discovered that we were not as good looking as we had always supposed, but, going on the theory that something is better than nothing even when you have to pay for it, we ordered a dozen or so to give to our friends to keep in their drawers. We bought senior pins to replace those belonging to the class of 1932, which we had somehow managed to lose. We were put out of departmental clubs for non-attendance and non-payment of dues. We witnessed an amazing rise of literary activity and periodical publi- cations, of varying merit. We were somewhat alarmed when we remembered what Miss Chase had said about prose flourishing in sophisticated, self- conscious, and usually decadent periods. We looked about us, saw very little sophistication, a good deal of self-consciousness, and no more decadence than usual. We gave it up, and took up badminton . . . We developed sudden violent political passions around election time, most inconsistently marched in all the torchlight parades, and used our first vote to further the fortunes of one of the two losing candidates. We noted with satisfaction and no small amount of wonder, the increase in the number of social consciences developing among the members of the undergraduate body. We watched the spread of socialism under the enthusiastic leadership of the fiery-headed Miss Smith. We managed to withstand the inroads of communism as promulgated by Mr. Arvin ' s students, the Why Club, and their communistic movies. We were just beginning to congratulate ourselves on the fact that we were getting out of college after four long years of it, when we suddenly real- ized that, in all probability, we would settle down and be fine upstanding members of the Smith Club in the old home town. C. A. C. W. The Smith College Association for Christian Work is organized under a Cabinet consisting of four officers and the chairmen of the standing commit- tees. By way of carrying out the Association ' s purpose to promote the de- velopment of a broad and intelligent activity in the service of humanity , the work of these committees falls into three classifications. First of all there are activities which are of service to the college such as Freshman Conference, Christmas Sale, and co-operation with Student Council particularly through Community Chest, and efforts to enable foreign students to become happily acquainted with American college life through the Cosmopolitan Club and the World Fellowship Committee. Community Service forms a second group of activities in which are in- cluded club leadership and teaching at People ' s Institute, co-operation with churches in the vicinity, friendly visiting in a number of Northampton in- stitutions, the distributing of Christmas toys and baskets for families, and the collecting of clothing and magazines. Connecting the college with various aspects of the world at large is the work of the Industrial Committee which holds monthly meetings with a group of Springfield industrial workers, the Conference Committee which has charge of Northfield and Silver Bay conferences, and the World Student Christian Federation representative who keeps us informed about European student movements. The Association ' s contribution to the more specifically religious aspects of college life consists of the introduction of speakers who are leaders in the field of religion, the arrangement of meetings for fellowship and worship in the Browsing Room, and the Annual Religious Forum. Some of the speakers were : trustees — Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Morrow, Dr. Fosdick ; faculty — Miss Caverno, Miss Dunn, Messrs. Abbott, Harlow, Orton, Welch; students — Misses Carr, Lewis, Mather; others — Sir Herbert Ames, Mr. Phelps. Four assemblies were used for Association meetings and one for carol singing. Charity Ball was held in the Scott Gym on December Tenth. Its two ends, entertainment and earnings, were realized, and the earnings were given to the Community Chest. An Electoral System was devised by which all college, class, and activity officers were elected at a fixed time and in the order of their importance. It was intended to do away with the resigning, re-electing, and general con- fusion which resulted from the old lack of system. A new Handbook which is to be a combination of the Fre shman Bible and the Customs and Regulations book was planned for. It ' s editor became the thirteenth member of the Activities Board. Judicial Board established Commission-of-Inquiry-for-the-Prevention-of- Crime. Each member of J. B. took eight campus houses as her special charges. She visited their Heads, Presidents, and Councils, periodically, to discuss problems and to exchange ideas. It is hoped that closer cooperation between J. B. members and house officers will result in a general better understanding of social relations and regulations. Student Advisors received six advisees apiece instead of one, took a training course to prepare them for the job, and entertained ' 36 at private parties and Fall Step Sing instead of at Freshman Frolic. The Student Association voted to amend its constitution. One amend- ment provided that the President of the House of Representatives should be elected by the Electoral Committee in the spring, instead of by the House in the Fall. Considering her importance it was felt that the President of the House of Reps should come into office at the same time and as a result of the same process as the Association President and the Chairman of Judicial Board. Another amendment provided that a second member of the Junior class should serve on Judicial Board instead of the extra representative from the House of Reps. The New England Assembly of the Model League of Nations was held at Smith the weekend of March tenth under the auspices of the International Club. The Five-College Conference of Student Government Heads was held at Smith the weekend of May sixth. ;i77] 1781 Phi Beta Kappa Back row, left to right: Catha rine Christie, Laura Evans Marden, Louise Meigs Weimer, Theresa Charlotte Hoglund, Alice Haselden Brown. OMEGA THE LION ROARS ' 1933 s [213 [215] Athletic Association 193 2- 193 3 The year 1932-1933 has been a most successful one for the Athletic As- sociation, although it has been more of a normal and at home year than last year, when events like the opening of the New Athletic Fields and the Hockey game with the visiting Scotch team provided unusual excitement. A dance recital by Harold Kreutzberg under the auspices of the A. A. was the first large and unusual event after the present administration had been installed in the spring of 1932, and it proved immensely inspiring to the members of our Dance Group and to the general run of laymen. The annual Red Cross Life Saving Week took place as usual and ended up with a demonstration by the Yale Swimming Team which, true to form, packed the swimming pool with admiring feminine onlookers. The Freshman Reception assumed a place of importance this year as a special feature of the Freshman Day under the new Advisee system. Many more Freshmen appeared than formerly, and although rain forced the events to take place indoors, the program of a basketball game, fencing, swimming, badminton, and deck tennis, to say nothing of cider and doughnuts, set the Freshmen off to a flying start. The Alumnae Reception followed shortly in the fall, successfully taking place as scheduled in the open air. A grand march, led by a band, and games on all the new athletic fields gave the alumnae a chance to see the athletic side of the college in full swing. A Decadent Gym Class made its appearance this year among all the other various activities, prompted by the desire of certain students, especially those doing Special Honors, who began to be alarmed at the sedentary life that they were leading. A strenuous as well as sociable group met regularly, thus affording another proof that the gym habit is not thoroughly discarded as soon as the requirement is over. Posture Week was an attempt, by means of striking and amusing posters, signs and announcements to make the College posture-conscious. The Nickerson Cup was presented for the first time this year. It is the gift of Mrs. Peg Nickerson Osgood of the class of 1912, and is given in memory of her father, Mr. Henry Nickerson. It is to be awarded annually from now on, to the individual who by playing ability, sportsmanship and general atti- tude has contributed most to the basketball season. As for the rest of the activities of the traditional schedule, such as tourna- ments and field days, etc., they have progressed most smoothly. Life Guard has given demonstrations of fancy swimming, as for instance swimming with lights, diving, etc., at Smith and also in Springfield. Dance Group delighted an overflowing Students ' Building for two nights with their recital. And Outing Club was especially active in promoting trips to the cabins and interchanges of visits with outing clubs of other colleges. The A. A. can therefore point to a very full and interesting year despite the fact that it was one that called for economy in many lines. 12161 Athletic Association Board OFFICERS VIRGINIA WHITNEY JANE McWHINNEY ELINOR FOSDICK MARY BEST EDITH ALEXANDERSON President Vice-President Honorary Vice-President Treasurer Secretary Left to Right, Back Row Jean Miller Outing Club Chairman Ellen Foot . . The dramatics revival, beginning as it did in 1931, had gained sufficient impetus by the spring of ' 32 to ofier the college some particularly worthwhile evenings of entertainment. In the spring of ' 32 Workshop, under Mr. Eliot ' s direction, staged an evening of four one-acts hot from the pens of his budding play-writing geniuses. Among these, Game and Beast Motif were found, by some of the critics, to be of such a questionable nature that the talent of their authors was disputed. Perhaps their excitement was unwarranted ; brain-children, like real children, never ask to be born! The end of May brought with it a surprise in the form of the D. A. play — Bernard Shaw ' s ' ' Pygmalion — with a faculty-student cast. Mimi Ramer ' 33 and Mr. Orton starred together, with a startling and delightful effect. Mr. Larkin ' s portrayal of Alfred Doolittle was the artistic high-water mark of the performance, which as a whole was ragged because of the usual lack of time for preparation. In the fall D. A., reviving its time-honored custom of trying out potential candidates for director of the coming year, entrusted Charlotte Fitch ' 34, Natalie Hoyt ' 34, and Hester Mount ' 34 each with the direction of a play. They chose Will O ' the Wisp , ' The Old Lady Shows Her Medals , and The Pot of Broth , respectively, and put them en one night at the end of October. While all three plays showed at times the hand of a novice, the audience went away satisfied. D. A. itself felt it a creditable piece of work; and the Director, with her Council, found her problem of choosing a successor rather thrice in- tensified than solved, after this display of talent from the class of ' 34. Following this bit of recreation there was a short breathing spell, until Mr. Eliot produced Margaret Clugston ' s Finished , with the co-operation of the Workshop group. The choice of a realistic problem-play about a boarding school was felt by some to be poor (no play from which the fifth act can be painlessly extracted is really good). The excellence of the entire performance, however, with Harriet Kale ' 34 carrying the difficult lead with a skill revealing genuine talent, proved that no play must be perfect to succeed. Fearing that the college would think she had gone into a decline after her pristine fall effort, D. A. now raised the curtain on Balderston ' s Berkeley Square. Rehearsals had been quietly going on since October, in collaboration with the Amherst Masquers, some of them held in Studes and some at College Hall in Amherst. Under Mr. Curtis Canfield ' s able direction the play had shaped up with more finish than any of the previous offerings of the year. In addition it had greater unity because while none of the actors were out- standing, all were good. William Clark, Amherst ' 33, and Eleanor Jones, Smith ' 35, played the young lovers with a naivete which for a change, was convincing. Four performances were given: in Amherst on December 7 and 8; at Smith on December 13 and 14. On the morning follow ing its last appearance, Helen Bragdon ' 33 relinquished with relief the responsibilities of the year and chose as her successor Charlotte Fitch ' 34. A lasting contribution of this year ' s D. A. Council to the college is the new design on the asbestos curtain in Studes, for which credit is due Mr. Larkin as its creator and executor. Despite the variety of trials and tribulations which fall to the lot of those who would follow the delusive footlights, we who are now veterans in the fray still find the smell of grease-paint tantalizing and exotic, and confess that far from having had things otherwise, some of us shall even continue along the path of illusion and vicarious living in the dim but glorious future. Mary Elizabeth Powell Years have flown by, with their wealth of fun, Friendships true and dear, Time will go on and lives will change ' Till we again gather here. Seniors, to-night we must bid you farewell, Make our last pledges to you, And as we fill your place on these steps We pay you a tribute long due. While twilight deepens — it ' s time ' 32 To sing you our plaintive adieu. II. Together we ' ve shared our experience here It ' s molded our lives and our thoughts, And Seniors you ' ve set through our college career A standard we ' ll always revere. You ' ve passed on to us your strength and your calm, Your courage so cheerful and wise We ' ll have it in store when you ' re with us no more, As a worthy remembrance of you. We realize now that it ' s time ' 32 To sing you a plaintive adieu. III. To-night we await what the future will hold, For when you ' ve departed en masse, Conditions then will be turned upside down And you ' ll be the world ' s Freshman class. And we ' ll remain here in the place that you ' ve held, Striving to follow your path, Through the dim haze of the long winter days, Taking the leadership on. But now twilight deepens — it ' s time ' 32 To sing you our plaintive adieu. 1933 [2591 Alma Mater To you, O Alma Mater, O Mother, great and true, From all your loyal children, Comes up the song anew. Where swings the red sun upward, Where sinks he down to rest, Are hearts that backward turning Still find you first and best. Chorus — And gladly singing to you always, Our loyal hearts with joy shall fill. O fairest, fairest Alma Mater, You hold and claim us still. By many a hearth your daughters Their love for you shall tell, Until in turn their children Shall learn to love you well. And still the ranks renewing, And stronger year by year, Are one in deep devotion To you we hold so dear. Chorus You gave us dreams unnumbered, And life we had not known, And now, O Alma Mater, We give you back your own. For memories, for friendships, That bless each passing day, Our toil unsought we render, Our debt unask ' d we pay.
