(The second will be taken up in chronological order.) It was on this date that 536 young ladies met together as with one mind to face the world, particularly that section of it commonly known as Smith ' s College, and to do their part to make said world, particularly aforementioned section, safe for whatever it should be safe for. With this great purpose always before them, and thinking always of their part in the universe these 536 began strenuously to uphold their own good names and that of the college — with degrees of effort and success varying according to the kind. In their pursuit of this ideal program they listened for hours on end to five minute talks on how they could best carry out the ideal — from the point of view of faculty, administration, student government, athletics, debating, publications, music, etc., etc., ad infinitum. Because it made for efficiency and was recommended by every one, they elected a president from their number. Which was a Good Thing. Thence- forth under President Sherwood ' s able leadership they proceeded on their way. They elected numerous other young ladies to offices and the unicorn to the position of class animal. In spite of the joyeuse Miss Stapleton they expressed their altruism in the class motto, 7 [on nobis solum. Academically, several decided not to follow the mob, but to bz individual, and so they saw to it that their class cards were nicely marked with red R ' s — standing perhaps for radical, or realist, or representative, or any one of a number of things. The only trouble with this scheme was that so many people got the same idea, or else were born with it. Along in the middle of the year Treasurer von Bricsen, inspired by an admirable sense of the fitness of things, sought to express the emotions — shall we say sympa- thetic, congratulatory, condoling, or what shall we say — to the Class Dean, Miss Isabel Smith, on the announcement of her engagement. This would have been a Good Thing if Dean Smith had announced her engagement. And the Good Things and the Not so Good Things were the first year. Lawrence Stapleton Chairman of Push Committee Dorothy Shore Resigned [110] II Still intent on upholding those good names and refreshed by a summer t ordinary living, the members of what was the class of 1932 returned to the haunts of Sophia in September of 1929. By this time they gloried in the recognition bestowed by the college-at-large on those not freshmen, and were thereby admitted to the rights and privileges of all sorts of things. They sang gayly to the class of 1933 at Fresh- man Frolic and added to their program of work the task of making the class of 1933 happy in the realization that they might in time reach the exalted sophomoric state. The moment which was to manifest to a waiting college the vast superiority of the class of 1932 was, of course, the Sophomore Carnival. Under the chairman- ship of Ellen Hess, the carnival was planned, rehearsed, and costumed. Efficient publicity stirred the minds of the college to a pleasant state of anticipation. Pictures were taken at dress rehearsals and discreetly circulated to arouse greater curiosity. Nature then stepped in and caused the date to be changed, so that the college had to wait for Paradise to freeze over. This naturally made a greater state of anticipation and would have been a Good Thing if Paradise had ever frozen over. However, there are in the archives of the class lovely pictures of President Cobb as the Prince of Wales and President Armstrong of the class of 1933 as a lion, and the imagination of the college-at-large was so stimulated that nearly every one has forgotten that there was no carnival that year. Bearing up bravely under this bitter blow, the members of the class turned to the Rally Day Show with undaunted zeal. Peg Smith ' s chairmanic efficiency and the far- reaching imagination of Miss Stapleton (who graced the scene in a bright colored kimono and beret together with her version of the ever popular Scotch accent) pro- duced for the college a field day truly prophetic of the actual formal opening of the Lamont Bridge. The crowning event of the year was, odd as it may seem, Commencement, at which Push Committee assisted in a highly efficient fashion. Already at the end of their second year the members of the class had discovered their several callings in the world of Smith College. There were those who, like Miss Rugh, Miss Eaton, Miss Margaret Woods, and Miss Shore, were wont to disport themselves gayly on the greensward in tunics, brandishing hockey sticks or tossing basketballs. There were those who, like Miss Cobb, Miss Knapp, and Miss Stapleton, were wont to pass their days in the scholarly pursuit of that elusive thing called education. There were those who, like Miss Adams, Miss Lamont, Miss Hess, and Miss Caffee, were wont to grace the campus in what the well-dressed girl will wear. There were, finally, those who, like Miss Ogden, Miss M. C. Smith, Miss French, Miss Chase, and Miss von Bnesen, were wont to uphold their own good names and that of the college to a superlative degree. From these groups Sophomore Push Committee was chosen, and these groups, together with ye goode olde (Anglo-Saxon or inorganic, who can say?) average student made up the class as it finished its second year. Those who were left by the shores of the Connecticut went on their way serenely, alike beset by the vicissitudes of college life and showered by its blessings. Rally Day saw Ingeborg Lincoln overseeing the making of cheese sandwiches, hot chocolates, and student revolutions on the stage of John M. Greene. Under the direction of Puffer Eaton the Din Inn exuded such an air of verisimilitude that even Mr. Curley was confused. The high point of the social year was, of course, Prom. Carol Sherwood was elected chairman, but resigned in the spring to take up her duties in her bigger and better job of helping the college at large to uphold — da da da, da da da, da da da, and Anne Clark was elected in her place. The sun shone for Garden Party, the moon for Prom; the week-end was all that could be asked of any week-end. And before they knew it, my dears, Commencement came again. It as sopho- more pushers the members of ' 32 were efficient, they were super-efficient as Junior Ushers. (At least they thought so.) They ushed vigorously and politely all week-end and still, would you beblievc it, managed to -- but we see you ' ve heard that one. The Good Thing of this year was the election of five members of the class to the Zeta of Massachusetts Chapter of Phi (pronounced any way convenient to you at the moment) Beta (ditto) Kappa (we dare any one, including the Dean and Miss Shields, to find an alternate way of pronouncing that) . And so they wept a little and realized they were seniors. 115] 1161 Sorbonne Group 1930— 1931 Agnes McLean Phoebe Adams Sarah Aisenberg Ruth Alpern Lilian Balboni Eleanor Billings Margaret Blake Eugenia Bovey Marcella Breidster Marion Bussang Sylvia Cibel Janet Claflin Martha Colley Helen Davis Constance Dick Miriam Emerson Patrica Fowler Sally Fowler Emily Frank Esther Garbose Harriet Gibbs Frances Hastings Florence Hearty Helen Henry Dora Heon Margaret Holmes Marie Holslag Helen Husband Elizabeth Jenkins Ruth Karpinski M aroaret Mc Intosh % President Mary iahony Marfn Morrison Emily Nichols Mildred Palmer Winifred Rathbun Florence Roberts Florence Rose Ursula Setlow Helen Simpson Alicia Skinner Mary V. After waiting two weeks more than the summer vacation called tor, the members of ' 32 threw up their heads and marched to meet their Senior Year in triumph. The 5 36 were no longer, but the 356 marched proudly and pointed to the way the Good Name was being upheld by the officers of the year: Miss O ' Daniel who held the reins of Student Government, Miss Sherwood who gave due rewards to those who failed to mind the reins, Miss Chittenden who received and relayed to the Council suggestions from the college at large and tried to get the suggestions of the Council back to the college at large, Miss Cobb who kept peace at class meetings, Miss Ferguson and Miss Sicker who spread, pardon us, disseminated is the word, college news within and with- out the Grecourt Gates, Miss Best who saw to it that the bats in the heavens of Studes were confused every now and then by lights and noise, Miss Cabot who tried valiantly to make the college understand the difference between the proletariat of the Debating Union, the aristocracy of the Debating Team, and the royalty, no less, of the Debating Council, Miss Merrill who saw that the sweet songsters of the college had clean white dresses and could warble Fair Smith effectively upon all occasions, Miss Johnson and Miss Brank who headed the intellectual and talented members of the class and led them in their serious discussions on the relative merits of Beckman ' s punch with and without bananas. And the 356 members of the class realized by all the signs and portents that they were Seniors, that at last they sat on the front rows of chapel (when there were any seats left by the freshmen), had the smallest choir, took Mr. Lieder ' s Draaaaaama (try that with a tongue depressor), were given innumerable blanks to fill out, were expected to work and given no excuse for not so doing, wondered about cars and Ian ' guage tests, and occasionally about more important things such as what to do, what to do. They looked back over their four years within the gates of Sophia, and they med- itated on the changes that had taken place in those four years: familiar faces gone and new ones in their places, new buildings erected, new rules put into effect. They reflected that they had been the first class to enjoy the privileges of paying for repeated language exams and the privilege of getting up in the dark to meet mid-years with a fresh mind; they reflected also that most of the changes of rule had not come nigh them — they had been too young to be called guinea pigs, too old to be called four year planners. But they had attained the rank of senior at Smith College. That was a Good Thing. The second date of importance in the history of the class of 1932 is June 20, 1932. On this date all those members of the class left, after the friendly weeding of those higher up, took their tassels in their hands and changed from members of the college to Alumnae and citizens of the Great World. 112 Commencement Wee 129] Ivy Day Program SATURDAY, JUNE, EIGHTEENTH Ivy Exercises on the Campus Ivy Exercises in John M. Institute World Fellowship 1531 S. C. A. C. W. The Smith College Association for Christian Work is organized under a Cabinet consisting of the four officers and the chairmen of the standing committees — Social Service, Speakers, World Fellowship, Worship, Church Cooperation, Peoples Institute, Conferences, Student- Industrial, Publicity, Social, and the World Student Christian Federation Representative. By way of carrying out the Association ' s purpose, To promote the development of a broad and intelligent activity in the serv- ice of humanity , the work of these committee falls into the following classifications. There are, first of all, activities which are of service to the college, such as the publication of the Freshman Handbook, the Freshman Conference, cooperation with Student Council, particularly with regard to the Community Chest, and efforts to enable the foreign students to find their place quickly and happily in the life of the college. Community service draws together a second group which contains the teaching and club leadership at the People ' s Institute, cooperation with the churches of this vicinity, the friendly visiting in a number of Northampton institutions, the Christmas gifts of toys and baskets for families, and the collection of clothing and magazines. Connecting the college with various aspects of the world at large is the work of the Student-Industrial Committee, the Conference Committee, and the World Student Christian Federation Representative. The Association ' s contribution to the more specifically religious aspects of college life con- sists of the introduction of speakers who are leaders in the field of re- ligion, the arrangement of meetings for fellowship and worship in the Browsing Room, and more conspicuously, the Annual Religious Forum. One provided for the reorganization of the Student Coun- cil; the other for the creation of an Activities Board. Council was reorganised in this fashion : It is to be composed of twelve mem- bers — the president of the Council; the chairman of the Judicial Board: the president of the House of Representatives; the four class presidents; two members from the Junior class, one of whom will act as secretary and publicity agent for council; a mem- ber from the sophomore class who will act as treasurer; the chairman of the Curriculum Committee; the chairman of the Activities Board. These last two members, the chair- man of the Curriculum Committee, and the chairman of the Activities Board, will take the place of two representatives from the Senior class and the president of the S. C. A. C. W. Council was reorganized in the interest of wider representation. It was felt that the Curriculum Committee, working as it does with the vital concern of college life, should have a place on Council. Again, it was felt that the unconnected and heretofore incoherent extra-curricular activities should be organized and repre- sented by the chairman of an Activities Board. The Senior class, already having six members on Council, will not elect two other class representatives, standing for no special interests, as it has in the past. The president of the S. C. A. C. W. will sit with the heads of fellow-extra-curricular activity on the Activities Board, rather than on Council. The second amendment to the constitution provided for the creation of the Activities Board. As has been said, it was felt that the extra-curricular activities should be organized so that they could voice opinions and suggestions which would be beneficial to the college, to the Council, and to the activities themselves. The Board, then, will be composed of the heads of the major extra-curricular activities — the heads of S. C. A. C. W., A. A., D. A., Debating, Weekly, Press Board, Why Club, Inter- national Relations Club, Alpha, and Phi Kappa Psi (to serve alternately), and a mem- ber from the musical organizations. The exact membership is not fixed. The Board will elect one of its own members as chairman to call and conduct meetings and to represent it on Council. The Board shall discuss general problems of student gov- ernment; act in an advisory capacity to Council; and further cooperation among the extra-curricular activities themselves. The Activities Board has become a reality, and even in infancy it promises to fulfill all expectations. It has already discussed problems and given specific and val- uable suggestions to Council. For example, it has envisaged a new and lively Faculty- Student Committee; it has expressed excellent ideas concerning the Student Adviser system and the revision of Point System. The Activities Board has undertaken its new career with efficiency and enthusiasm. May it live long and vigorously! 1631 |1641 Phi Beta Kappa MEMBERS IN 1932 Elected Junior Tear Barbara Best Dorothy Culp Elizabeth Cobb Marjorie Louise Guernsey Alicia Prescott Skinner (Mrs. John Carleton) Elected Senior Year Alice Lilian Bigley Eleanor Clarke Billings Margaret Coe Blake Ruth Ann Brank Helen Elizabeth Brown Julia Acnes Bulman Helen Calvocoressi Louise Ann Christison Eileen Creevey Edith Fox Elizabeth Cornell French Julia Heiman Betsy Knapp Helen Margaret Lennards Agnes Denison McLean Marcia Van Ness Maylott Lisette Elliott Person h s Tabitha McKeehan Petrw Gertrude Raffel Hilda Small Richardson Eleanor Seely Salmon Celia Schopick Elizabeth Sherry Pauline Slom Katharine Laurence Stapleton MEMBERS IN 1933 Mary Elizabeth Brown- Janet Holloway Cairns Frances Cobb Janet Cobb Florence Margaret Henry Margaret Linden Mather Marian Chandler Sykes Katrina Van Hook 167 [168] A First Semester Ruth Brank Mary Bowman . H. 197 Novel Pleiades T932- [198] [200] [201 The Athletic Association The Smith College Athletic Association, now at the ripe age of 39 years, has continued its general policy of last year with a program of Field Days, Demonstrations, Tournaments, The Horse Show, Float Night, and The Dance Recital. 1931-1932 has in addition been unusually rich in innovations of many kinds, including new and thrilling contacts with the sports world outside of the College! The following were events of unique interest and importance: The 7 [ew 22-Acre Field, consisting of 5 hockey fields, 2 soccer fields, 4 badmin- ton courts; 3 golf holes, and a bridle path, were officially opened with the dedication of the Bridge, a gift of Mrs. Thomas Lamont. The impressive ceremony came to an end with the fields being used for the first time in demonstrations of all the outdoor sports offered by the College. This included tennis on the 8 new hard-surfaced courts. The Scottish Field Hockey Team visited Smith during the tour of America and met the College Team in an intensely exciting and very hardfought game. A large crowd of spectators experienced the thrill that accompanies an exhibition of interna- tional competition in sports. The Scots were guests of the College over the week-end and were entertained with enthusiasm by the students. The l [orth East Field Hoc ey Association, a branch of the United States Field Hockey Association, held its tournament at Smith this year, the first time such an event has taken place at this college. The College was hostess during the week-end for eight hockey teams, whose games were the best possible examples of after-college hockey. The Intercollegiate Outing Club Conference assembled at Smith for its annual meeting, arousing thereby an unprecedented enthusiasm for winter sports — a pastime acquiring a steadily increasing group of devotees, as was exhibited by the formation of the new Skiing Club. The members, necessarily restricted to those who know how, organize frequent week-end trips to good skiing country. The Dance Group, after a tremendously successful recital at Smith, were invited to attend a Dance Symposium at Barnard College, in which Barnard, Wellesley, Vassar, and New York University also took part. The climax of the Symposium was an exhibition by students of the Mary Wigman School. The American Red Cross sent a representative to Smith for a week of intensive instruction in swimming and life-saving. The culmination of this short but vigorous course, was a demonstration by the Yale Swimming Team. This imposing list of events has by no means effected the customary health interest in College activities as such, in which 85 per cent of the student body participate. The enthusiasm for Basketball remains unabated, as illustrated by the seasonal excite- ment over the regular tournament for the 12 class teams, and also that of the 14 XYZ teams. The Badminton Tournament is new this year, and for the first time also, the winners of this, the Bowling Tournament, and the Squash Tournament, will receive class numerals as their rewards. 1931-1932 has been an exciting time, and the Athletic Association hopes that the interest and co-operation of the student body will continue to be as encouraging and helpful in the future, as it has been this year. In fact, it has been the occasion of a remarkable and a very inspiring revival of the theatre in Smith College. Everyone these days is becoming stage-minded — begin- ning, of course, with the frequenters of 311 — and certainly the mounting enthusiasm, the greatly increased number of productions, and the appearance of a veritable horde of actors, hitherto unsuspected, has all gone to prove that the contagion is spreading with unprecedented rapidity. The first production, of the season was an innovation for the boards of Student ' s Building. It was a propaganda piece in the form of a powerful drama of the drought- stricken farmers in the West. For two nights, Can You Hear Their Voices packed the house. It was produced under the auspices of Mr. Eliot ' s Workshop, Beautifully directed by Julia Heiman 1932, and very effectively lighted by Mr. Eliot himself. Only a very short time after this, The Dramatic Association went heavily Rus- sian and raised the curtain, one fine night, on The Treasure , which though some- what labored as plays go, nevertheless was very interesting to see and gave frequent indications of Director Barbara Best ' s superb sense of the stage and its effects. Along about this time, the talented societies of Alpha and Phi Kappa had a sud- den revulsion of feeling, and wisely decided that the theatre at Smith was badly in need of the lightness, the delicacy, and the licentiousness of the Restoration. Practi- cally no sooner said than done, for after scarcely two weeks of work, the able Laur- ence Stapleton succeeded not only in moving a gigantic cast smoothly through the rather tortuous antics of The Knight of the Burning Pestle , but also in putting over every minute of it. Outstanding performances were given by Miriam Ramer 1933, Elizabeth Caffee, E. J. Parker, Margaret Rankin, Aurelia Plumly, and Edith Cramer — all of the class of 1932. The next event on the bills was somewhat delayed in appearance because of the close succession of Mid-years and Rally Day. In March, however, things fell once more into their old gay pace with four one-act plays, adapted from short stories by students of the College and produced by Workshop. They ranged widely from seri- ous drama to farcical sketches, and all in all, provided an evening of excellent enter- tainment. Exactly a month later, Workshop, still unable to wear down its energy, put on a well-balanced program composed of The Pretty Sabine Women by Leonid Andreyev, and A Pound of Flesh by Margaret Hammel 1932. , Obviously, the various organizations interested in Dramatics have left no stone unturned in their admirable efforts to give the year ' s theatre bill a wide range of variety and interest. In so doing, they have aroused the enthusiasm of the College as a whole to an unusual degree of intensity, and the excellent accomplishments of the year ought to give rise to a great deal of future inspiration. If you must go, If you must go We follow slow What can we show the way you knew; To say farewell, Your year has passed, Can voices tell and ours as fast What we all know too well? will soon be through; It is so true But never will sever That we ' ll miss you, Your memory today, We need not say You leave us and grieve us That Step Sings will be blue Because you have to go away. With you away. II The days of comradeship with you For through the years it passes on Well not forget From class to class The passing of those days we knew A spirit born of knowledge that ' s well We do Regret won — So, seniors we ' re singing Of comradeship and standards held and A farewell song to you joy at Smith — But still we are bringing And this we owe to you A spirit that ' s unchanged yet new Thirty-one. Ill We take the Senior Steps Tonight A pledge that we will do our best And realize To keep these steps and fill the place That next year we must prove our right Of thirty-one To keep them ours. And be a worthy senior class to you So while we are singing So hear us as we take these steps and Farewell with all the rest sing our song — Yet still we are bringing A pledge of trust to you from Thirty-two. Where swings the red sun upward, Where sinks he down to rest, Are hearts that backward turning Still find you first and best. Chorus — And gladly singing to you always, Our loyal hearts with joy shall fill. O fairest, fairest Alma Mater, You hold and claim us still. By many a hearth your daughters Their love for you shall tell, Until in turn their children Shall learn to love you well. And still the ranks renewing, And stronger year by year, Are one in deep devotion To you we hold so dear. Chorus You gave us dreams unnumbered, And life we had not known, And now, O Alma Mater, We give you back your own. For memories, for friendships, That bless each passing day, Our toil unsought we render, Our debt unask ' d we pay. Chorus Henrietta Sperry, 1910. [2421 [243 ' 2441 [245] ] [onsense It is quite a simple airy affair to write a nonsense column but only the best that mon- ey can buy is chosen because we want only the best that money can buy so we got Forey Cord, Grouchy Barx, Hey you Brown, B. Barnard Haw, and Alf Hill Hurray! to join in the spirit of the thing (the nonsense col- umn). They have been working like little Trojans, and their combined efforts have pro- duced this stupendous, all-singing, all-talking, all techni-color work of art. Per Bacco , cried the villain, for he was in on it too. We 1729 girls began in 1836 and by 1974 there were only a few of us in college. About 6 were taking general honors and the remaining 5280 were still going strong try- ing to pass posture picture (alliteration is best in composi- tions of this sort) tests and make-up examinations. But then one can understand that 26 girls can ' t all have the same mentalities. That is one of the remarkable things about this remarkable college of ours — we all seem to be remarkably different, but of course, not entirely because most of us wear shoes and stockings, except that some people prefer just shoes. [246] I remember distinctly how upset we girl chums were when our last and very most favorite step sing was brok- en up. It seems that everyone had flunked out and the next class had to sing instead, but then it was a fair plus chance for them to show their mettle. Or maybe we were there after all. Anyway, pause, whom should ap- pear around the corner but Chit ' 32. Eileen ' 32 was howing cabbages when she noticed the intruder. Stop thief! she cried, but no answer. If Smith ' 32 had had the presence of mind she would have answered, but at that time Parker ' 32 was stranded on a high note. The crack tumbling squad was on hand — Plumly ' 32, Rugh ' 32, Wemple ' 32, and Woods ' 32 formed a beautiful pyramid and brought her safely back to mother earth. I) Fudge making took the college by storm. Stapleton ' 32 was our blue ribbon girl, but being overly modest she refused the prize of a neat little Leghorn and passed it on instead to Gernda ' 32 who had really talked her out of it. Scott ' 32 and Staley ' 32 glossed the hard feelings diplomatically away and by Carnival time everybody was hap- py. It was a rip roaring, whipper snapping, side splitting affair just chock full of good clean fun. Woods ' 32 and Steere ' 32 cheered while the rest of the class joined in a hearty and lusty cheer. And after that college was dismissed and everyone went home tired but happy. And so to bed. [247] They will not find us changed from them they knew — but can you recognize us? FOUR LONG YEARS AGO [248] The Editors of the 1932 Tear Boo wish to express their gratitude to the following members of the college whose advice and assistance has made this volume possible.
