. 1 SMITH COLLEGE YEAR BOOK 1931 CLASS OF 1931 5MITH COLLEGE IMiTH COLLEGE CLASS OF ODD □ Helen Paull Kirkpatrick, Editor Matilda Bradford Day, Associate Editor Janice Edna Tarlin, Business Manager MMM ' RZJZ ZMJZMMMM SOPHIA SMITH . THATfar- -seeing pioneer who, with stal- wart and undaunted will, more than a half century ago, laid the foundation of Smith College B THE SOPHIA SMITH HOMESTEAD DEDICATION TO WHOSE personal interest and helpful advice have been continually en- couraging throughout our college course Alma Mater Words by Henrietta Sherry, ' 10 Mimic by H. D. Sleeper To you, O Alma Mater, O mother great and true, From all your loyal children. Comes up the song anew. Where swings the red sun upward, Where sinks he down to rest, Are hearts that backward turning Still find you first and best. Chorus And gladly singing to you always Our loyal hearts with joy shall fill, O fairest, fairest Alma Mater, You hold and claim us still. You gave us dreams unnumbered, And life we had not known, And now, O Alma Mater, We give you back your own. For memories, for friendships, That bless each passing day, Our toil unsought we render, Our debt unasked we pay. I)i mocritus III to His Ri aim r Gentle reader, thou must not presume that this treatise intendeth to slander, calumni- ate or cavill in jest against any unoffending member of this august college. Indeed, Democritus would not willingly write that which should in any way dishonour such a flourishing and ample foundation as Smith College — ENTHI APETHI , nor would he willingly censure the divers members of its commendable senior class. As the politic Kirkpatrick hath it, I am a LaFolIette for the reform of this institution. So likewise Democritus is for the reform of the dizzards, who, desirous of glory, per- petuate impudent and arrogant calumnies of their fellow scholars. Accuse him of being a plagiarist, a trifler, a trivant, but accuse him not, gentle reader, of being a scurrile detractor. Continued on Page 117 [113] 1141 - t v.;-. Till ' . NEW CURRI- CULUM, which was unchained and admitted to the campus on the entrance ot this martyred senior class. We have submitted ourselves to the dangers ot hydrophobia I which Aurelianus sa s affects the brain) from the bitings of this monster to such a degree, that we shall be known to posterity by our strength .md strong seasoning as The Curried Class. ... It hath been observed that the mastery of more than one tongue becometh a tongue-twister to certain of our members, and it hath also been observed that none are so blind as those who cannot C. Alack! Speechlessness is dumbness and blindness causeth stumbling by the wayside. And this class that was to the numbers of many hundred hath been so diminished, decreased, curtailed, and pared by the snippings of the New Curriculum that we may say with Lucy Gray, Now We Are Seven. (Democritus doth not often give vent to his emotions, but he hath at this moment detected one tear in the memory of the rusticated scholars [those elsewhere] ' with whom he had joined in guessing an answer.) II. IT HATH BEEN CALLED A REGULA INSTITUTION It hath been affirmed by Bruno Lucullus that The bridge of education is one of sighs, t but it hath been affirmed by an august administrator of Collegia Smithonia that The eddies, whirlpools, rapids and whirlgigs of student minds and personalities which Qoweth under the bridge are subservient largely to the whims, phrenzies, inhibitions and counsels of those parents who are the source of that which comprises for four years the college body. Such a mother, such a daughter; their very affectations and infirmities Lemnius contendeth may many times be imputed to their parents. So, may the rules, regulations and restrictions which abridge this education be imputed to the parents! It hath been writ that the students may not motor after the lamps are lit, or leave the grounds of the institution without penning words of explanation on a blue card, or leave a dormitory until the clock hath tolled seven of a week day and eight of a Sunday, or (if they be freshmen,) enter the confines of a vehicle with a gentleman without the written permission of their parents. Until recent days, there hath been little stirring in the mud-paved streets of North- ampton after ten; the students have been for the most part then asleep. One year ago, however, the student body led by one Marco, hath protested and evinced a regula noia which alloweth the student to enter the dormitory of a Saturday evening as laic ti eleven o ' clock. Such mischief this alloweth! It is of advantage to those who attendeth the cinema, the evening mass, or those who do regulate their health and spirits by a brisk and prolonged exercise of the limbs. Likewise this senior year hath uncovered a still larger privilege, that of fuming in the dormitory living rooms after partaking ot the mid-day and evening repasts. III. OI THE SPECIES OF MEMBERS Within such trafrkkings of the college are those who have bound it together by their upright and gracious endowments. There is Katherine Park Whose nimbus of red-gold hair Hath crowned the president ' s chair in this our last year, as hath Martha Berry, Harriet Loutrel and Helen Ward in previous years. There is Lorna Macdonnall who doth elicit harmonies from the piano and from the Judicial Board; Harriet Loutrel whose counsel guideth the council, and Frances Rich who gathereth together the complaintes of the college houses; Caroline Woodhull whose Christian precepts lighteth the S. C. A. C. W4 These are but a few of the weaker sex who have inculcated and induced into the riotous and contentious students a pervading spirit of law and order. As much to be honored, lauded and applauded as these, are those scholars who by reason of recognizing the purport and import of a college education, have ferreted out the knowledge, information, enlightenment to be found in the tomes of the librarie. There is Isabella Athey whose knowledge exceedeth all understanding, Isabel Stearns, Elizabeth Perkins and a dozen others who may well say with Horace, The gods were kind In giving me a great and modest mind. Then, too, there are those whose pen writeth all manner of clever essay, narration as found in the Sequence, reformed and edited by one Mary Fuller Chase, of great renown not only for her Sequence but for her important Uiirers, her Florida oranges and her namesake of professorial rank. There is not to be neglected Sylvia D ' Lugasch whose subtle humour maketh us to slap our sides with laughter and whose production of Mary Rose maketh us to languish in sincerest tears. There is indeed Olga Drosh- nicova whose diminuitive figure doth not diminish the gravity of her opinions, the magnitude of her treatises or the quality of her caviar. There is also to be commended Jessie Tierney who hath edited our Weekly Tabloid and Grace Mitchell who sitteth at the head of the Press Board to inform the greedy countrie of the events, doings, and activities of this wicked and immoral institution. COURTIERS OF 1 AMI In this Catalogue, however. There ' s no perfection so absolute That some impurity doth not pollute. So we find that a tew precocious but too eager young ladies have been guiltie of seeking out the professors .itter their lectures, detaining them from their viands with divers and sundrie questionnings. It hath been rumoured that certain lean professors have been dn en to bind themselves together into a Rolling Stone Societie, tor it is well known among you that a rolling stone gathereth no MOSS. Let it also be known that there are those who show their intellectuals in a more subtle wav, not depriving their professors ol their victuals, but cramming them with delicacies at the Mary Marg as it hath been Quaintly a bbreviated by the scholars, where divers of them sit sipping tea with the professors of their choice. Likewise among us are those females who aspire to covet, but oft-times only simu- late those attributes ot great minds, and go about affecting the intelligence of the gods ol Olympus and the genius of the great American critic, pronouncing judgment on T. S. Eliot ' s Wasteland. They pretend their conversation to be subtle and pregnant with meaning and that which is simple in their conversation they call whimsy. As Green hath exposed the upstart crow with a tiger ' s heart wrapt in a player ' s hide, so mav we smile at the upstart lackeys with their terra firma hearts wrapt in the navy ' s robes. Not to be ignored, likewise, are those healthful, enthusiastic, vigorous shower- singing athletes as Carol Smith, who perfecteth their bodies and giveth soul to Depart- ment of Physical Education, as it hath been s atirically called by some. In addition to the running, jumping and swimming exercises are those Maddie Wag-jaws who carry muscu- lar manipulation to the extent of chinning themselves on Beechnut sticks, a dangerous and most nerve-wracking spectacle for others. V. PROGNOSTICKS OF DOMESTICITY There are those in our class, neophytes at the gates of Romance, idealists, senti- mentalists, sensitive souls, who no longer wish to call their souls their own, but rather desire to merge them with the whims, phancies, ideals, conceits of a male soul; who have wandered at divers times and some habitually, along the banks of a nearby body of water searching for Paradise. As it hath been observed in Bartlett ' s Quotations: Men may come and men may go, But this goes on forever. The melancholy of the more unfortunate romanticks causeth such anguish, grief and vexation of spirit that the parties so troubled are wont to go to St. Vitus for succour, and after they partake of his Studes Saturday Night cure, they are speedily made well. So large a number seeketh St. Vitus that the quaint custom of stagging hath been abolished this year, and the melancholy seniors, aspirants of a better state, have lost their last foot-hold in the marriage-market. Get thee to a nunnerv. rni] Yet methinks we must not venture to terminate this argument without mention of those young ladies of talent as M. E. Jones, Evelyn Boardman, Helen Hunt and Jane Hawkes, whose art is displayed within these covers; those Franciate Americans who last year hunted the Muses in their sacred haunt, Mt. Parnassus, Paris; those whose allure- ments includeth good marks and remarks and remarkable good looks, as Frances Rich, Sally Thatcher, Nan Hall, Ann Booth, Josephine Post. VI. FINAL PROGNOSTICKS It were vain to commend all those gifted, beautiful, kindly, intelligent females which comprise this our class, or those formerly in our class who were rusticated, expelled, or driven forth by the rigours of the New Curriculum. Let us conclude rather with a prophecy of the future which the historie of this 1931 promiseth to fulfill . . . We, that are University Women, like so many hide-bound calves in the pasture, will tarry out our time, wither away as a flower ungathered in the garden, never used; or as too many candles, illuminate ourselves alone, obscuring one another ' s light. If, after long expectation, much expense, travail, earnest suit of ourselves and friends, we obtain a small preferment at last, as a hosiery clerk, our misery will begin afresh; we will be suddenly encountered with the flesh, world and Devil! But lest I overtrouble you with a picture of that unfortunate, harpy-like, troublesome, gargantuan monster, UNEMPLOYMENT, worse than any monster herein mentioned, let me say, Farewell and be kind — to Vocational Guidance. This one last note in four years swelling tone, Must live in ivy that shall grow upon this stone. With mounting ivy, then, we leave our song, That each in future years may grow more strong. We plant the ivy as a guardian here, To keep the memories of those things that we hold dear, To watch over walls, and trees, and skv, To catch the echo as the years are passing by. With mounting ivy then, we leave these days, As we go forth upon our different ways. With mounting ivy then we leave our song, That each, as future years increase may grow more strong, To mingle with the ivy of the past, And with other echoes, as our song is dying fast. All students are eligible for membership and about 1700 have availed themselves of this privilege this year. The activities sponsored by the Association since its organization have increased from four to twenty-five. They include team sports, individual sports, camping, winter sports and dancing. The Athletic Association Board is composed of the officers of the Association, the representatives or managers of the various sports, a publicity manager, the Chairman of the Outing Club, the Chairman of the Dance Group and the Boat House manager, and a member of the Department of Physical Education. Each manager of a sport is responsible for her sport during its season and helps the instructor in charge of the sport to conduct the tournament or meet or recital with which her sport concludes its season. The following events are sponsored by the Association: Fall: 1. Freshmen Reception — a demonstration of sports and dancing. 2. Fall Crew Competition (for form). 3. Fall Field Day. Winter: 1. Basketball Tournament. 2. Swimming Meets. 3. A Dance Recital. 4. Demonstration of Physical Education Activities. 5. Bowling Tournament. 6. Ice Hockey Games. 7. Squash Tournament. Spring: 1. A Lacrosse Week — special instructor. 2. Red Cross Swimming Week. 3. Horse Show. 4. Field Day, Float Night, and Dance Drama. Innovations this year: 1. Alumna: Games. Hockey and Basketball. 2. A second Basketball tournament for class sections. 3. A Squash Tournament. 4. Some officiating of High School Games. 5. Classes of dancing taught by students. 6. Badminton and Deck Tennis introduced. 7. Crew opened to Freshmen and Sophomores first year. 8. Fencing put in as election in required schedule. The Athletic Association is continuing its policy of helping the Department of Physical Education to offer a program as broad as possible that each student may find some activity which is suited to her physical ability and skill. In so doing it is to be hoped that each student will have the opportunity of experiencing that same pleasure in participating in dancing or sports as was at one time the good fortune of a limited number of students. The play is a rollicking comedy, and was very well acted. The jug around which the play revolved was an astounding piece of work, made by Signorina Vezzetti. Miriam Ramer was excellent as the irritated owner of the jug, Mable La Montagne the unfortunate mender who shut himself in and was afraid to get out for fear he would break it, and Jane Kidston the perplexed lawyer. The climax of the play was when the owner became too irritated for words, and kicked the jug into a thousand pieces. The play was preceded by a delightful Tarantella danced by six Juniors, and a group of Sicilian folk songs by E. J. Parker. Mary Rose, by James Barrie, was given on December eleventh and twelfth by the Dramatic Association, and was entirely and very ably directed by Sylvia D ' Lugasch. The play was a difficult one to do, but was a remarkable success. Edith Cramer as Mary Rose, though she looked a bit too much of this earth, gave a very good interpretation of the difficult part. Mr. Leland Hall was her father, and proved that acting should have been his profession. Mr. Putnam was very good as Simon, and very funny. The scenery, done by Ruth Mitchell, was perfect, especially the island. Miss Burnett ' s Dance Group gave an unusually good performance this year on January sixteenth, and repeated it on February twenty-sixth with a few slight changes in program. Ragamuffin was especially good in the first performance, danced by Betty Joy Street. The Air for the G String which they have done before, was repeated with its usual success. The dancers showed exceptional talent. The scenery was very nice, but we missed the modernistic castle which was so good last year. Miss Burnett should feel very much gratified for the continual success of her group. The language departments have exceptional senses of humor, as was shown again by the performance of the French f aculty of Knock or Lc Triomphe de la Medecine, by Jules Romains, on March eleventh and twelfth. Monsieur Guiet played the role of Knock, the new doctor in the healthy country, and is an excellent actor. He directed the play as well. The ancient automobile in the first act, driven by Mr. Vorenkamp, was extraordinary, and the wheels actually turned around. Mr. Robert as the retiring doctor was very good. Mr. Hall appeared with his customary success as the Premier Gars, and was accompanied by Mr. Vorenkamp as the Deuxieme Gars, and brought down the house. What keeps the Student ' s Building on its feet and the Dramatic Association from destruction through the years is Jerry Brick. There is nothing that he does not know: from acting and make-up to making a panelled door in three minutes, and the Dramatic Association owes him a large debt of gratitude. tftffl fr 226] 12271 Year Book Board Helen Kirkpatrick Matilda Day Janice Tarlan Helen Ward Lydia Chittenden Rachel Darling Virginia Danson Katherine Scranton Janet Morison Elizabeth Thatcher Helen Smith Marion Rice Elizabeth Perkins Elizabeth Robert Mary E. And ivied walls in echo soft reply: Seniors, hold fast the mem ' ries of these days. Turning from here you face the distant Mays, Leaving the steps that you have held this year. Juniors, accept the trust and hold it dear. Singing to you a song now growing old, Telling a thought the years have often told. Thirty, with saddened hearts we see you go, Sun of your college days is sinking low. And as the sunset hues mingle with shade. Tones of our farewell song softly will fade. Lost in the night, its echoes die away. Slowly we take these steps at close of day, Thinking of you, Thirty, days that are done; Love follows you always from Thirty-One.
