EDITORS ' MESSAGE The editors of the 1966 ECHO have created this yearbook with one primary pur- pose, to give the readers a running account of this year ' s activities of the Smith Academy students. By highlighting our senior year, we have tried to show what our high school career has meant to us. Through our academic struggles and ex- tracurricular activities, we have learned to work together as participants in com- munity living. We are indebted to many people for the success of our yearbook. Our thanks especially go to Mr. Skarzynski and the other members of the faculty for their interest and co-operation throughout the year. To Mrs. Spakowski, our advisor, we extend our heartfelt thanks for her helpful counsel. We express our apprecia- tion also to the many students who contributed write-ups and helped with the solicitation of ads. Let us not forget our sincere thanks to the advertisers and patrons without whom this yearbook could not have been published. I, as editor- in-chief of this yearbook, especially would like to thank all the editors who were so generous with their time and talents. Within the covers of this yearbook we hope you will find a true portrait of Smith Academy, a vital force in our community and in the lives of its students. Muller We, the class of 1966, dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Flor- ence E. Muller who has willingly sacrificed her time to help us overcome the obstacles which we have encountered. We deeply appreciate the sincere effort which she has made to encourage us to develop our individuality. IN MEMORIAM Patricia L. Zembiski December 21, 1948 - April 1, 1965 Sent to you is our last farewell Amidst the clanging of many a church bell. Many shall miss our demoiselle Truly deeper than one can foretell. Difficult is it to overcome the deep sorrow, Or hold back that out-breaking cry Of those who depart from us — today or tomorrow, But surely this should accompany all who die. Her smile will never begin to fade, Radiance and warmth it had shown, Revealing in Heaven — as the home of holy-made With character of an ever-cheerful tone. Long will rest the fervent memory For the girl who meant much to us. Yes, quite hard is it to combat the tears Which support the faith that rules all dear. by Thomas Ursia PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE To the Class of 1966: Like every other high school graduate, you, as individual members of the gradu- ating class of 1966, will face critical decisions which neither wealth nor educa- tion will be sufficient to allow you an easy resolution. Maturity may promise the offer of an answer, for often, what has endured previous trials may endure yet another, and experience will be the product. We hope this has been the product of your education in Hatfield. As you enter the modern adult world with all of its exciting and fearsome de- mands, you can be secure with one thought. The most critical problems existing in the world have all been created by the people living in the world. Under- standing the answers to these problems simply requires 1 of you an under- standing of the people who created them. But caution forces me to quote the words of the English philosopher, John Locke, for his Essays on Human Under- standing. No man ' s knowledge here can go beyond his experience. Whatever decisions you will have to make in the future, allow your experience to share with your emotions in the answer. This is the true path to maturity and to material prosperity. With it will develop a spiritual prosperity which no price tag can place a value upon. Music for the evening was provided by Bob Jeffway and his band. Soon the long awaited hour drew near and the traditional grand march began, directed by Mrs. Muller and led by the class president, Martha Bel- den and her escort. There was a stillness throughout the room as the most important moment of the night arrived and Helen Mary Zgrodnik was crowned queen by Superintendent John A. Skarzynski. Her court was composed of four lovely girls: Jean Appleton, Marcia Goclowski, Barbara Monahan, and Carol Stempel. As the end of the evening drew near, all couples were reluctant to leave the beautiful scene and will always think of it as These Mo- ments To Remember. Under the direction of Mr. John Naumowicz, the Thespian Society successfully produced the come- dy Hillbilly Weddin ' on November 5, 1965, at the Hatfield Town Hall. This comedy in three acts was about the adventures of a well-to-do aunt and her nephew who, due to automobile difficulties, were forced to seek lodging overnight in a hillbilly cabin. This play also involved the ad- ventures of Paw Belsnickle as he tried to find suitable husbands for his daughters. This year ' s Spring production was an experiment in Smith Academy ' s music department. Through the combined efforts of the Glee Club and the Thespian Society, an operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, was successfully produced on May 13, 1966. Many talented students participated in the presentation of this, production. The operetta is the story of a young man, who due to a misunderstanding, was indentured to a band of pirates. The major-general must give up his daughters to the pirates who are noblemen in disguise. M. Belden, N. Kochan, T. Ursia, H. Belden, S. Yarrows, J. Naumowciz 39 40 PUBLICATIONS The editors of the ' 66 ECHO worked continually dur- ing the school year to make their yearbook the best one yet. New ideas were initiated to create a con- temporary instead of a traditional feeling within the yearbook. The editors devoted each Thursday for this purpose. The members of the ' 67 staff got a head start and worked side by side with the ' 66 editors. The Falcon Flyer ' s interests were improved and broadened, creating more of a school newspaper than a one-page notice of school events. Write-ups were dedicated to all school activities, and sports events were featured as major articles. Students, of course, enjoyed the gossip section most where they found out what their fellow classmates did for ex- citement and what was going around the school. Inspiration long in coming. The main goal of the track club this year was to familiarize the partici- pants with the proper use of equipment in order that those returning next year would be able to enter in area track and field meets. The javelin, discus and shot put were covered this year, as well as the 100 yd. dash and the triple jump. Members of this club practiced during their own free time and have already set several excel- lent timings and distances. Next year we all look forward to seeing S.A. pro- duce a spectacular track team. BASEBALL wm 0 $ ,W ROW ONE: Coach Andrews, L. Prucnal, K. Zerneri, M. Vachu- la, R. Pel is, D. Paddock, P. Skorupski.G.Vac- Coach Andrew ' s Falcons finished the season with a Hampshire League record of 6-8, a considerable im- provement over past years. The accent this year was on experience, due to fine performances by two and three year veterans. Credit must also be given to Coach Andrews whose instruction and initiative gave the team confidence and encouragement. Experience will play the major role for next year ' s team. The full team is expected to return next sea- son with the exception of Dave Sikorski, the only se- nior on the team. Dave did a commendable pitching job and was assisted by every member of the team, including a fine third base rookie, Ken Zerneri. It is hoped that next year ' s season will be as successful for the Falcon ' s as this year ' s season was. hula, V. Lisewski Jablonski. D. Sikorski, R. Burrington, T. Wickles, D. Tourna- ment, but were defeated in the first contest. . The Falcons ended their season with a 10-2-0 record in the Hampshire League and a 13-3-1 rec- ord overall. Bob Pelis took the honors in the Hampshire League for number of goals scored with 17. Next year ' s team looks very promising, losing only one senior, the captain Alan Prucnal. ■■■■i w aHHH Jg WW f?4ay f d L. J.V. BASKETBALL D. Jablonski, B. Malinowski, V. Lisewski, R. Burrington, T. This year Coach Joseph Savage put together a splendid J.V. team whose hard work was well re- warded by an undefeated season. Although the Junior Falcons and their opponents were well matched, the Falcons combined skill and spirit to establish a winning 19-0 record. The J.V. outlook for next season is an exceptionally fine one due to this year ' s promising performances of sophomores William Betsold, Victor Lisewski, and Thomas Wic- kles, and freshmen Gary Burda and Walter Popko. • ' ' Sift ' 4mm 55 VARSITY BASKETBALL ROW ONE: W. Once again the Smith Academy Varsity players of the 1965-66 squad captured the Hampshire League Crown after losing four of the five starters in ' 65. Coach Max Moczulewski predicted a fifty- fifty season, but the team came through spendid- ly for him after having had to rebuild from the previous year. The Falcons bench consisted of mostly Junior Varsity players, who came through well when needed. The Falcons had a fine 16-3 record, (16-2 in Hampshire League), losing twice to St. Michaels, and once to East Longmeadow. The Falcons also were invited to the Small School Tournament, but were defeated by Turner Falls in the first game. Next year should be very promising for the Fal- cons with all but one player returning, the only senior on this year ' s squad, Alan Prucnal. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL VARSITY: ROW ONE: S. Majewski, S. The Girls ' Basketball team, under the direction of Miss Kozera and Miss Pipczynski, enjoyed a fairly good season. Playing energetically, the Varsity won five of the twelve games played. Although the Junior Varsity didn ' t do as well this year, the future looks brighter for these fighting ball play- ers. The Varsity also participated in a Basketball Tournament at Frontier Regional High School. They were victorious, winning their first game, but were defeated in the semi-finals. The Frontier Regional Girls ' Invitational Basket- ball Tournament Association awarded Martha Belden a $250 scholarship, and Sally Majewski was named to the All-Stars team. Although the team will lose Martha Belden and Karen Fitzgerald, the team looks forward to a successful season in the coming year. JUNIOR VARSITY: ROW ONE: J. Fitzgerald, C. Cantwell, E. Boyle, M. The entire squad consisted of: Sarah Belden, Eileen Bruscoe, Cindy Mullins, Kyra Petrick, Monica Pickett, Karen Wilkes, Varsity; and Christine Doty, Louise Roga- leski.and Irene Smiarowski, Junior Varsity. Sally Belden served as the team ' s mascot. The squad entered two cheering tournaments this past sea- son, doing their best in both. After lunch the se- niors visited Rockerfeller Center and Radio City. Departure was at 10:00 from Kennedy Air- port and the families were all waiting for the tired but happy seniors at Bradley Field when the jet landed at 10:30 Saturday night. Holy duck feathers!! S.
