Prentiss in appreciation of the sincere effort he has always given as our class advisor and teacher. We shall always remember him for the way he made our problems his. Principal ' s Message To the Class of 1965: Throughout the latter years of your lives you have been made aware of the great competition we as a nation must face in the world of today . It is to our pride and to your honor, that you have been prepared to take part in this competition. Yet we hope you have gained more than factual knowledge for this competition. As you enter this changing, competitive world, it is our hope that you have gained a sense of duty and obligation. Many of you will rise to positions of great responsibility. All of you will be required to make decisions that require sacrifice . When these events take place, we hope you can remember the meaning of these following lines. We like to believe they embody the educational goals of Smith Academy. We hope they also describe your worldly goals. Love thyself last; cherish those hearts that hate thee; Corruption wins not more than honesty. Still in thy right hand carry gentle peace, To silence envious tongues: be just, and fear not: Let all the ends thou aim ' st at be thy country ' s, Thy God ' s and truth ' s; then if thou fall ' st, O Cromwell, Thou fall ' st a blessed martyr. Thespian Society This year the Thespian Society put on two successful productions entitled LOCK, STOCK, AND LIP- STICK, and MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. The former, the Senior Play, was put on November 6, 1964 at the Hatfield Town Hall. The comedy in three acts was about the troubles at a school when a lady guidance counselor comes to a school. The latter was the school play which was produced May 21, 1965, also at the Town Hall. This comedy written by Christopher Sergei was about a family which was supposed to move when the World ' s Fair was about to start. Stanley Malinowski, Frank Glenowicz, and Margaret Yangin- ski were outstanding in both plays as the stars. Under the guidance of Mr. Naumowicz were the following officers : Pres. Yanginski; V. Pres. Yearbook The 1965 ECHO has been greatly improved and it is hoped that the students and teachers enjoy this issue of the yearbook. Additions and improvements include colored endsheets, sepiatone throughout the book, and candids to show both sides of the well-balanced student at Smith Academy, along with the best paper. The editors and the staff worked diligently throughout the year to raise the money needed and to put together the yearbook. The staff wishes to thank Mrs. Spakowski and all those who helped to make this edition a success. We would also like to wish the 1966 staff luck with their anniversary yearbook. It will be the ECHO ' s twenty-fifth birthday. They will probably introduce many more new items into the book which we could not. Various members of the staff were assigned to write articles in the area in which he wanted to work. The ECHO was published during the Christmas season and Easter, In addition to these Mrs. Pruzynski started her school paper staff on a new venture this year ... In January a one page ' newspaper called the FALCON FLYER was published once a week, usually Tuesday or Wednesday. With its seventeen members it held its annual literature contest. Judges from the society were David Brennan and Margaret Yanginski. High school judges were Mr. Moczulewski, and Mr. Savage, Junior high judges were Mr. Naumowicz, and Mrs. Muller. Prizes were awarded on Class Day, June 16 in groups of three to both the senior and junior high divisions. Students could enter essays, poems, or short stories. At the Class Day exercises Mr. Naumowicz awarded pins to ten seniors. The class of 1965 designed these pins for the seniors before them also. The prizes from the contest were also awarded that day. Falcons Finish Fourth Although the Falcon ' s fourth place finish was not an overly impressive one, there were, as there usually are, outstanding performances by individual team members. Co-captain Bob Symanski at left halfback made the All Hampshire League first team, with Bobby Pelis (inside right) and Bill Hoffman (fullback) receiving honorable mention. Pelis and freshman Bruce Malinowski did most of the scoring for coach Spike Nadolny. The most optimistic note for next year comes from the fact that Coach Nadolny will have a goodly number of experienced players returning, only one of them a senior. Behind the scenes. Our Motto — Work; don ' t goof off! Get that goal! Although winning the same number of games as last year ' s team and finishing the season with a 3-11 Hampshire League record, Coach Andrews ' Falcon had a very good season in one respect. Once again the accent was on youth and once again a very good group of freshman will probably keep it that way for awhile. Freshmen Tommy Wickles (at shortstop) and George Vachula (at second base) did very commendable jobs both on the field and at the plate and will more than likely be regular starters next year. Bruce Malinowski, Vic Lisewski and Rich Burrington also held their own. If a replacement can be found for ace pitcher Bob Burke (this year ' s and last year ' s Most Valuable Player), perhaps things will begin to move next year. Our lucky charm. What ' s the big joke? Accent Still on Youth KNEELING: Malinowski, Brennan, Poole, Marcinowski, Mr. Andrews, Sperry, Flouton, Pelis, Des- mond, Burrington, Lisewski, Burke, Vachula, Sikorski, Prucnal, Wickles, Vachula, Malinowski, Prucnal, Maiewski, Wilkes, Olszewski, Mr. Healy. 49 m KNEELING: Prucnal, Burke, Symanski, Glenowicz, Hoffman, Jagodzinski. STANDING: Sliwoski, YagodzinsM Pelis, M. Moczulewski, Puchalski, Skorupski, Osley. ' Hampshire League Champs It was a real red-letter year for the 1964-65 Falcon Express. Anticipated as a weak, rebuilding year after the loss of four starting seniors from last year ' s second-place, 13-5 team, it turned out to be probably Smith Academy ' s and Coach Max Moczulewski ' s proudest. The Falcons, picked to finish third or fourth, rolled over the Hampshire League competition (many games were close, but the express always had that vital reserve power needed to come out on top) and remained undefeated until their last league game, a very close one, when they were tripped up by a revenge-seeking St. Michael ' s team, and ended the season with a 17-1 record. To top off everything, the team went to the Western Mass. Tournament, losing to Holyoke High by a score of 44-42. The key to this particular team ' s success was undoubtedly its balanced attack. The five starters (Bob Burke, Bob Symanski, Bob Pelis, Bill Hoffman and Frank Glenowicz) all were capable of and had twenty -point performances. Four of the five finished the season with double-figure averages, and the other player just missed with 9.2. The team was in a huddle. The coach was at the head. rfoSr Jy wri flB| - JBkfH Hm. j H B E Mr ] K9 i , fl H iJ ySj By M ., r J K r r ' JC j ' v Ban ■ fB m w ■? s 1 I Si i Ttff .: v ! it 7 if iff ? ' iifc | ■ l In IS fjiS D. Maiewski. Smith ' s Future Noise-makers This year Coach Joseph Savage put together Smith Academy ' s strongest J. V. team in many years, and certainly one of the strongest in the past Hampshire League season. Thanks to the consistent high scor- ing performances of John Yagodzinski and Richie Sliwoski and good play from regulars Alan Prucnal, John Osley, Dave Puchalski and Chet Skorupski, the junior Falcons beat most of their opponents by wide margins on their way to a 16-2 record. A strong junior varsity team such as this one will certainly be a boon to varsity coach Max Moczulew- ski, who is losing four of his five Hampshire League champion starters to the post-grad world. Coach Carolyn Kozera sparked the varsity to a 5-8 record, and Coach Bernadette Pipczynski did a good job with the unexperienced junior varsity squad. Both coaches added much spirit to the games and found that the girls were always willing to fight to the end. Many of the new players especially surprised everyone with their basketball ability. Marcia Goclowski, Donna Symanski, and Christine Sliwoski were the girls working behind the scenes. The hopes for an even better team next year are high, since only one player is graduating and the captain will be editor of the yearbook. S. Belden, M. Dzwil, H. Sikorski, B. Slysz, P. Jaworski, C. Mullins, E. Bruscoe, C. Bourque, J. Adamites. Cheerleaders The only veteran cheerleader on this year ' s squad was Helen Sikorski, captain. Other varsity cheerleaders were Jayne Adamites, Celeste Bourque, Eileen Bruscoe, Cindy Mullins, and Bonnie Slysz. JV cheerleaders were Sarah Belden, Marie Bzwil, and Patty Jaworski. Go Purple! ! Over the Rainbow Saturday evening, May 23, 1964 the annual Junior Prom was held at the Hotel Northampton in the Currier Ives Rooms. Multicolored crepe flowers carried out the theme, Over the Rainbow. They were placed around the Queen ' s throne. A white picket fence set the throne off from the dance floor. The music for the evening was provided by Gus Perfito arid his band. The traditional grand march was led by Class President Frank Glenowicz and Donna Donnis. The class voted before the prom that no girl who was queen before could reign that evening. Members of the band chose Sandra Baceski as Queen of the prom. Her court was com- posed of the following girls: Suzanne Yarrows, Jeannette Backiel, Marcia Goclowski, and Cessie Cybulski. The prom proved to be an occasion well worth remembering. Suzy Yarrows and Tony Wendolowski enjoy one of the coaches in front of the site of the Prom. The Class arrived at the Kennedy Airport on Thursday. They were able to see the famous Easter show at Radio City. All of Friday was spent at the World ' s Fair. Editor ' s Message To keep pace with other yearbooks across the nation, the editors of the 1965 ECHO decided to include many innova- tions. These include colored endsheets, fewer division pages, different lay-outs, metallic printing on the cover, and more candids of the students and teachers. Candids were put in the yearbook to show the activities of the students in and out of classes. These innovations were made possible through the help and co-operation of many people. On behalf of the yearbook staff, I would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Skar- zynski and the members of the faculty for their aid and co-operation throughout the year. I am also grateful to all the students who helped with the solicitation of ads and the typing of yearbook material. At this time I would like to acknowledge the hard work and sincere effort of the vari- ous editors who contributed so much of their time to the yearbook. Furthermore, I must not forget to mention our advisor, Mrs. Spakowski for the contribution of her valuable advice. In conclusion, our sincerest thanks go to the ad- vertisers without whose financial support this yearbook would not be possible. In our yearbook we have tried to illustrate for the community a picture of Smith Academy during this year. Here we have tried to depict the students in their times of joy, their times of sorrow, and their periods of mental anguish. In short, we have tried to show you the many sides of Smith Academy.
