It should also serve, I believe, as an example of the ability of the students of Smith Academy. This year we have continued the use of hard covers on our yearbook as it is our feeling that this type of book may provide a permanent record of the school year. I would like to thank all the members of the staff who have worked so diligently in order to make this yearbook a success, especially the staff of editors who have devoted much of their time and effort. I am sure I voice the feeling of the entire staff of The Echo when I say that I hope this yearbook brings you unlimited enjoyment. Albert Cechvala Editor-in-Chief Dec icajfion We, the Senior Class of 1961, are honored to dedicate our yearbook, The Echo, to Mrs. Margaret P. Pruzynski, who merits our respect and admiration as our teacher and class advisor. During our four years at Smith Academy, we have been guided by her wise counsel and encouraged by her undiminishing faith in us. We only hope that we may at some time help others as she has helped us. Therefore it is with deepest gratitude that we dedicate this yearbook to you so that it may be a lasting memorial to your insight and integrity. ADVISOR Mrs. Mary A. To the Class of 1961: As you leave Smith Academy, whether you go to further your edu- cation or whether you seek employment for what might be your life- time profession, remember that you are the future citizens and leaders of our nation. The strength of our democracy lies in the integrity of its citizens. In this fast but ever changing world, live a life dominated by the true moral principles. Be a true leader by knowing the way, going the way, and showing the way. The glory of our nation has been, that, in times of crisis, citizens arise who, with a total commit- ment to the welfare of the nation, ignore personal popularity and often financial gain, to serve the ends of justice. With these thoughts in mind, go and take your place in this ever changing world and may God bless you in your every endeavor. : John A. Glass Jiisii ort y Only four short years ago our class entered the portals of Smith Academy full of ap- prehension and fear. Now, with the invaluable knowledge which we have gained, we are preparing to set out into the world to make our bids for success and become the leaders of tomorrow. On a sunny September morning in 1957, twenty-nine freshmen entered Smith, won- dering what was waiting for them within the doors. We were very pleased to welcome Maureen Molloy, a transfer student from Northampton, who proved to be a tremendous addition to our class. Under the leadership of our class advisor, Mrs. Pruzynski, our class elected the following officers: President, Mary Ann Osley; Vice-President, Thom- as LaBelle; Secretary, Carol Maslanka; Treasurer, Albert Cechvala; Student Council Representative, Judy Porada. On September 30, we became full-fledged Smith Academy students as the godly juniors put the lowly freshmen through the rigors of initiation. In April we made our social debut with the Freshman Dance which proved to be a tremen- dous success. A large crowd danced to the music of Dick Duda and his orchestra in the Town Hall which was lavishly decorated. With the coming of June we were surprised that our first year in Smith Academy had passed so quickly. Returning to the now-familiar halls of Smith Academy, we found that we had only twenty-five members. We had lost Robert Start, Richard Vachula, Claire Calenski, and Judy Buckman. After holding class elections early in the fall we chose the following officers: President, Albert Cechvala; Vice-President, Mary Ann Osley; Secretary, Carol Maslanka; Treasurer, David Byrne; Student Council Representative, Judy Porada. Late in October we staged a successful social event, an Indian Summer dance, with the Town Hall colorfully decorated with pumpkins and cornstalks. The highlight of the year was the ordering of our class rings, which we all happily received in February. Re-entering Smith Academy as proud and mighty upperclassmen, we, as juniors, elected the following students to lead our class: President, David Byrne; Vice-Presi- dent, Carol Maslanka; Secretary, Judy Porada; Treasurer, Patty Wilkes, and Student Council Representatives, Mary Ann Osley, and Albert Cechvala. Claire Galenski joined our class along with Ray Tremblay, a transfer from Chicopee. This year it was our enviable privilege to welcome and initiate the freshmen. Hilarious stunts and a dance following provided an enjoyable time for all. The next major activity was the much dreaded prize speaking. Emerging as victors were Maureen Molloy and Henry Wykowski. On the evening of May 27, we put on our memorable junior prom, Stair- way to the Stars. As classes adjourned that year, we looked forward to our final year, one we vowed would be remembered. Eagerly returning for the culmination of our four years at Smith, we promptly elected our class officers: President, David Byrne; Vice-President, Carol Maslanka; Secretary, Joan Goller; and Treasurer, Patty Wilkes. Elected as Student Council Repre- sentatives were Albert Cechvala, Mary Ann Osley, and Maureen Molloy. We found that again our class had been reduced in size by the loss of Henry Wykowski and Claire Galenski. We held three very successful food sales to finance our Washington Trip. In November, the Senior play, The Ghoul Friend was held with many seniors taking part. In February, we held a combined Valentine and victory dance to celebrate the winning of the Hampshire League by our basketball team. On April 17, THE DAY arrived - the day we left for Washington on our class trip. After an eventful week, we returned to Hatfield for the few remaining weeks of school. On June 16, we stood on the stage of the Town Hall, each to go his separate way, eager to undertake the challenge of life. Smith Academy compiled a tremendous record of 9 wins against only 2 defeats, and one tie, winning the Hampshire League Crown. The starting lineup for the Falcons was Wilkes, Byrne, Kovalski, Rudy, Michaloski, Korza, Burnickas, R. Slysz, Pelis, B. Slysz, and Petro- wicz. Answering Coach John Symancyk ' s call for a 1961 baseball team were 15 boys, all enthusiastically looking forward to the first game. The team opened the season with two independent games against Chester High and Smith School. The other rivals included the Hamp- shire League teams of Amherst High, Hopkins Academy, Frontier Regional, Arms Academy, Pioneer Regional, and St. Michael ' s. Because the majority of the team was composed of inexperienced players, Smith Academy won only three of the fourteen games played, but in each game, the entire squad played with undying spirit. With all but one member of the team returning next year, the team can look forward to a good season in 1962. uous Uarsifu jasAetball FIRST ROW: T. Michaloski, M. Wilkes, R. The Smith Academy basketball team followed in the footsteps of last year ' s Falcons and made Western Mass. history by winning the Western Mass. Tournament for the second consecutive year, the only team to achieve this feat in the history of that tournament. Although four of last year ' s starters were lost through graduation, the Falcons completed the regular season undefeated. The boys suffered their first loss against Hartford High of Hartford, Connecticut in the New England Tournament. The Hampshire League and Western Mass. In truth, these girls never lacked spirit and always fought to the bitter end. Regard- less of the score, Coach Atkinson could rely on her girls to give their all, whether the result was victory or defeat. ( i jee veacA eaoers Left to Right; C. Pickett, J. Zembiski, C. Besides encouraging the boys to win, the illustrious nine, with their rousing cheers, captured second prize at the Frontier Regional Cheering Tourn- ament, and also placed second at the David Prouty Tournament.
