SHAKESPEARE SUPERINTENDENT AND PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE JOHN A. SKARYZNSKI Remember Class of 1960, as you leave Smith Academy, whether you go to further your education or whether you seek employment for what might be your life- time profession, you are to become the future citizens and leaders of our nation. The strength of a democracy lies in the integrity of its citizens. Even in this space age, a life of character is a life dominated by true moral principles. The true leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. The glory of our nation has been, that, in times of crisis, gifted citizens arise who, with a total commitment to the wel- fare of the nation, ignore personal popularity, and often financial gain, to serve the ends of justice. With these thoughts in mind, go and take your place in this ever changing world and may God bless you in your every endeavor. MRS. JOAN B. THIS IS YOUR LIFE — CLASS OF 1960 In 1956, you were one of the thirty-three timid freshmen enter- ing Smith Academy. Since then the school has never had a dull moment. You were very happy to welcome two new pupils: Patty Molloy, a transfer from Northampton, and Sondra Kellogg, a transfer from Williamsburg. Under the trustworthy leadership of your class advisor, Mr. Symancyk, you held your first class meeting to elect your officers for the forthcoming year: President, Kenneth Kulesza; Vice-President, Richard Sadoski; Secretary, Betty Stempel; Treasurer, Edward Malinowski; and Student Council Representative, James Majes- key. After becoming accustomed to your environment, you were allowed to put on your first dance on April 26 which was a complete success. As the ending of your freshman year drew near, many of you were thinking how fast the year had gone by and about all the wonder- ful and eventful days to be remembered forever. After a restful summer, you came back to pick your class officers for the Sophomore year. They were: President, Kenneth Kulesza; Vice-President, Patty Molloy; Secretary, Barbara Goclowski; Treas- urer, James Majeskey; and Student Council Representative, Edward Malinowski. John Karakula joined your class in September and you very glad to welcome him. Remember how excited you all were the day you received your class rings? How thrilled you felt to have the security of belonging to Smith Academy and be part of its functions! That was the year you put on two school activities: The Autumn Leaves Hop and the Lollipop Hop. Many of your classmates went out for sports and did a fine job! Entering in September as a Junior gave you a sense that you were growing up and would soon be on your own in this wide world with many responsibilities. Class officers were elected: President, James Majeskey; Vice-President, Barbara Goclowski; Secretary, Patty Molloy; Treasurer, Sondra Kellogg; and Student Council Representative, Bar- bara Filipek and Kenneth Kulesza. You lost two students and gained two: Shirley Niksa, a transfer from Northampton High School, and John Baker, a transfer from Frontier Regional. That year you were in charge of initiating the humble Freshmen by having them perform ridiculous stunts and long speeches. In the middle of this unforgettable year, each one of you Juniors was required to deliver a declamation before the entire student body. Ten of you lucky people were then chosen to say your declamations at the Town Hall with Sondra Kellogg and Kenneth Kulesza coming to the top as the winners! You then ad- journed this year with the Junior Prom Rhapsody in Blue. The hall was beautifully decorated in various shades of blue. Then it came - your Senior year! Your classmates elected to serve as your class officers were: President, James Majeskey; Vice- President, Paul Labbee; Secretary, Barbara Novak; Treasurer, Sondra Kellogg; and three Student Council Representatives, Barbara Goclow- ski, Robert Dulaski, and Kenneth Kulesza. One of the highlights of this year was the Senior Play entitled Class Ring. You will certainly never forget your Washington Trip with its picturesque sights and un- forgettable times. On Commencement day, you stood on the stage of the Town Hall, wearing graduation caps and gowns, and waiting for the moment when you would receive your diploma. Like all other Senior classes, you were sorry to leave, but eager to start your life in this great world. By 9:30. thirty-one of us and our chaperon, Mr. Moczulewski, with the group from Hopkins and their criaperone, Miss Jacobus, were at the Northampton station anxiously awaiting the train. Our trip officially began when we met the Chester group and their chaperone in Springfield. Lunch on the train was eagerly awaited by all. After a hot, tiring, bumpy ride, we arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, at 5:45, where, motor coaches transferred us to the Old Bay Line pier where we boarded the City of Norfolk for an overnight sail to Norfolk, Virginia. Staterooms were assigned, and dinner was served en route. The evening was spent getting acquainted. Friday, April 15 Everyone aroused cheerfully at 6:00 with a bright outlook for the day to come. We had breakfast aboard our steamer, City of Norfolk, and then boarded a bus for our pleasant trip to Williamsburg. At Williamsburg, we saw an interesting movie about restoring the colonial site and went on a guided tour which included; the old Capitol where Patrick Henry made his famous speeches and the Gaol where Blackbeard ' s pirates were imprisoned. While in Williamsburg, we ate dinner at the Colonial Restaurant, and then traveled to Jamestown and Yorktown. After a day of sight-seeing, we journeyed back to our boat at the Norfolk Pier. On boat, we ate supper and enjoyed an evening to ourselves. During the night, our boat ventured to Baltimore. Saturday, April 16 Still traveling by boat, we all arose early full of vim and vigor to eat breakfast at 7:00 in the dining hall. Then, at 8:00 we were on our way to Washington by the motor coaches. En route to Washington, we stopped to see the Franciscan Monastery, the newly built Immaculate Conception Church, and passed by the White House. We then arrived at the Annapolis Hotel, where we checked our baggage and were served lunch. After lunch, we went on a guided tour, which covered many interesting sites, such as the United States Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Institute. After touring all day, we returned to the hotel to freshen up before supper. We had the night to ourselves and everyone took advantage of it. Sunday, April 17 After a sleepless night, Easter Sunday, a beautiful sunny day was one of our busiest days. At seven, everyone went to his respective church and attended services. At 10:00, following breakfast at the hotel, we left for an interesting tour of residential Washington. After we crossed the Potomac Paver, we found ourselves in Virginia. Our first stop was at Arlington Cemetery to see the Tomb of the Unknown Solider and the changing of the guards, and then to the famous Marine statue. Lunch was served at the famous Pen -Daw Restaurant. Traveling over the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, we visited the famous home of George and Martha Washington, where we spent the re- mainder of the afternoon. Returning for dinner at the hotel, we then took a night tour to the Lincoln Memorial and the Archives Building where we saw the original copy of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution of the United States. After we returned to the hotel, we had the evening to ourselves. Monday, April 18 After having breakfast at the hotel, we then visited the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where we saw the printing of U. S. stamps, bonds, and paper money. We then went to the Washington Monument and many of us climbed to the top. After re- turning to the bus, we went to Union Station for lunch. Departing from the station at 12:45 via the Pennsylvania Railroad, we arrived in New York at 4:35. We were then transferred by motor coaches to the Taft Hotel on 7th Avenue, at which time rooms were assigned. Following dinner at Maisel ' s Restaurant, we attended the Broadway Hit Please Don ' t Eat the Daisies at Radio City Music Hall. After the show we had the evening to ourselves, and many of us took full advantage of a night in New York. Tuesday, April 19 Tired, we got up at 8:00 and had breakfast on our own. At 10:00, we had a choice of either going shopping or to the United Nations for a guide conducted tour. Here the group was split, but then joined for lunch at Maisel ' s Restaurant. At 2:00, we went by motor coaches for a guided tour of Downtown New York, passing through Wall Street, the Bowery, Chinatown, Fulton Fish Market, and the East Side. The motor coaches then transferred us to Grand Central Station and departure from New York at 5:05. Dinner was served aboard the train. We arrived in Springfield at 8:04 and waited for the train to Northampton until 8:30. We arrived at Northampton at 8:54 safe and sound, but everyone was exhausted from touring and insufficient sleep. All in all, everyone enjoyed themselves and would love to have the chance to go again next year. JrOL oJcZr% y% . ■v . 1 ' • r MUM II 111 «t tfl . WILL i |M .J ; ■■■■P.
