Farewell classmates, teachers adieu, Here at the cross roads we must part from you. Hope calls us onward, bidding us be true, But memory binds us ever, to our dear S. A. and you. Here at the cross roads we ' re parting . . . Each one must journey alone, Each one must choose his own pathway, Building from days that are gone . . . And when we face life ' s stern battles, May memory bring us the sight. Bright with her promise eternal, Bright with her promise of truth. Class Poem After four cheerful, gol ' den years We are going to leave all behind; The stately red brick building With ivy-covered walls, And quaint old stairway; The spacious green lawn Shaded by the great elm trees; The dear familiar classrooms, The worn books, And well-autographed desks. We go and leave behind Our friends, Our teachers, And our guides. On a June day we say farewell; And — wistful, eager, hopeful — We look beyond the distant horizon Toward the unknown future. Our new friends, Our work, Our success, And our life . . . PURPLE AND WHITE ECHO Class History Three years ago, forty five -ambitious students entered Smith Academy. The first few months were difficult ones, but with the urge of determination, we succeeded in the first lap of our journey. For our first class officers we elected Richard Morse as president; Frank Krawczyk, vice-president; Regina Skorupski, secretary; and Andrew Skorupski as treasurer. The class advisors were Mr. Larkin and Miss Lyons. We were feted with a freshmen reception given by the class of ' 39. A grand time was had by all and Vaga Marcinowski captured the first prize for the best performance. We enter- tained the other classes at our Christmas Party. The second lap of our journey, as sophomores, was not as difficult as the first. We elected as class officers for that year Robert Yarrows, president; Frank Krawczyk, vice-president; Regina Skorupski, secretary; and Edward Slusars, treasurer. Our class advisors were Miss Allaire and Mr. Kalloch. In October we sponsored a Halloween Party which was very successful. For the third lap of our journey, new officers and class advisors were chosen in order to permit rest to those who had helped in the tedious task of leadership. At the meeting, Joseph Maksimoski was chosen president; Robert Yarrows, vice-president; Hantley Bruscoe, secretary; and Robert Saydlowski as treasurer. The class advisors v ere Mr. Kalloch and Miss Cullinan. In October we sponsored a freshmen reception in honor of the new freshmen. During the third lap of our journey, Regina Skorupski. Evelyn Janos, and Peggy Deinlein were chosen as Pro Merito members, because they had attained an average of eighty-five per cent or over for the first three years. Also, we had our annual Junior Prize-Speaking Contest. Declamations were held and the following students were chosen to speak in the annual alumni prize speaking contest: Florence Dippolt, Evelyn Janos, Janet Mullins, Regina Skorupski, Zygmount Dzwil, Robert Yarrows, Frank Krawczyk, and Stanley Reimszewski. The alternates were Florence Zuroff, Adveja Krukoski, Felix Jaworoski, and Alfred Skoczylas. The winners of this alumni contest were as follows: first prizes, Florence Dippolt and Zygmount Dzwil, second prizes, Evelyn Janos and Robert Yarrows. In May, we had our Junior Prom for the benefit of the Washington Trip. We had a money raffle for this same benefit. For the fourth and last lap of our journey, we elected the following officers: Robert Yarrows, president; Joseph Maksinoski, vice-president; Regina Skorupski, secretary; and Vaga Marcinowski, treasurer. Our class advisers were Miss Ryan and Miss Stoddard. Frances Kacinski, Florence Zuroff and Florence Dippolt were chosen as Pro Merito members. In November, and again in March, we sponsored Square Dances for the benefit of the Washington Trip. These dances proved to be very successful and profitable. In April, we sponsored a turkey drawing for the benefit of the Washington Trip, and our own classmate, Florence Zuroff, was the lucky winner. During the week of April twenty-first, ten seniors took the Washington Trip and on their return they reported an exciting trip and interesting visits which they made. The students were under the guidance of Principal Hiram F. Battey of Deerfield High School and Mrs. Battey. In May, Principal Larkin announced the honor students whose outstanding work during the four years in school qualified them as graduation speakers. Regina Skorupski was valedictorian, Evelyn Janos salutatorian, and Peggy Deinlein received third honors. Building for Democracy was the theme of the graduation program. Evelyn Janos had for her topic The Dream of Freedom; We and Our Heritage was given by Peggy Deinlein; and Which Way, America? by Regina Skorupski. HELEN BESKO ' 41
