CLASS OF R ,6 Q MWY' f TEMPO 6 g QMILEYJUNIOEJ W HIGH QC!-1001. 'mr X gif' A N V x. g ,',,f5,x DENVER, CJCLORADO QM Jeckca fion This yearbook of 1964, is dedicated to john Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States. john F. Kennedy Was born May 29, 1917, inaugurated, january 20, 1961, and assassinated November 22, 1963. He was a kind, gentle, handsome, intelligent man, a man who Wanted peace on earth, and freedom for all men. Greater love than this no one has, that one lay down his life for his friends. President Kennedy was one of these men with that love. He was a man with the tempo. He has gone, but life lingers on. 2 X 4' 7 Owv Tempof i The tempo is in everyone's life. Life is a race, for all of us have different times and directions to go. Tempo means time, and time waits for no one person. To know your tempo you must know yourself. Your tempo can not be limited and if you set the right pace you will reach your goal. A life that gives nothing does nothing, or wants nothing---is worth nothing. Do you ever stop to think who you are or where you are going? You have been at Smiley three years. Have you grown up or old? Grow up in wisdom and not old in years. Find the right road and follow your heart. lt has a beat that keeps in tempo. Time is the only thing between youth and adulthood. You are at the crossroads. Which direction are you going to take? This is the time to make up your mind. The tempo can give you individualism. Are you going to set your own tempo, or are you going to let others set it for you? Here is your opportunity to advance yourself with an education and instill in you an attitude to want to become a better person. lf you set your tempo too slow, time will slip by and you will not have reached your goal. ln this time when there are more and more of us increasingly in competition with one another we find we have so little time. When we have extra time and we do not use it to its full capacity, we will soon become victims of soft living. Our values, our standards, our manner of living will become nothing if we do not run our right tempo. Tempo is only part-follow its beat, trust in God, see all, and do not be afraid. When you first read this, it will be a warm, spring day. As we grow, we must plan ahead. What will you be SMX doing ten - twenty - thirty years from now? The world in which we live is changing constantly. You, as a ninth grade pupil, can look back and see many changes that have taken place in your school, your country and yourself in the past three years. Un- doubtedly there will be even greater changes in your next three years. We, at Smiley, hope we have helped give you the foundation on which to base your decisions as you meet H changes in the future. Marvin A. Powell Principal f i. .L Mr. Schultz Mrs. Welch DF- Stone The students of Smiley say a special Thank You to Mr. Powell, our capable Principal, to Mr. Schultz, our Assistant Principal, to Mrs. Welch, our Dean of Girls, and to Dr. Stone, our School Coordinator, who have dedicated to us their unselfish and prolonged efforts. 6 Tow owvTeaclw1w - Z? T , s 1 Knowledge is life. It enables man to live, to eat, and to continue to breathe. Without intelligence, the basis of knowledge, man would not be able to learn and develop those techniques which enable him to produce those things that are necessary to live . Nearly every human'is born with a certain amount of intelligence. But no matter how much intelligence this person has it will not help him unless he tries to stretch his mind to its capacity. God gave each human a different amount of intelligence to take care of every job. Everyone must look for and find his potentialities. What good would it do a man to have the necessary equipment unless he had learned the techniques? This is the reason for our schools of today. Our teachers are here for a reason--to develop our minds--to help us adjust to our tempo--to help us set a pace. They help us find what we want out of life. They help us create our ideas and opinions. All through our school years our teachers have unselfishly devoted their time and efforts to teaching us. They have given us guidance to help us overcome our problem and have taught us to face them bravely. They have tried to instill into our hearts a need for learning. But they cannot force this upon us. They can only show us the way--the rest is our responsibility. Our teachers are the ones who give us life. They enable us to produce those things that keep us in existence. They, are the ones who help us find our goals. For all these efforts we have a special Thank You for each and every teacher. We owe a great deal to him. Through him our class has had many exciting, and educational experiences. It seems impossible to express our appreciation to him ad- equately--but since words we must use--we hope he will accept our thanks--as something meant very sincerely. Thank You, Mr. McCracken, you are a very rare and wonderful person. We were indeed fortunate to have you as our sponsor. Y ff X Toft1wniutivgwdeclassoff1C964.. IX All teachers know before they even see a new class, as we knew before we saw your class in 1961, that the group and the individuals within the group will all be different. Obviously, each will be different in appearance, but most importantly each will be different in style, taste and tempo, those hidden parts of personality. These years have revealed your distinct and unique personalities. Your collective and personal uniqueness has been our satisfaction. At the close of three years, we must pause and admit at least partial defeat. When you were quiet it was difficult to assess your tempo, when you were loud we criticized too quickly, when you appeared to be average we brushed past you too casually. If, however, you find some fun in learning, if you see your fellow student as a real individual who operates at different but valuable tempo, and if you are able to make a place for yourself, using some of the skills acquired here, then we, your teachers, can look with satisfaction on these past three years with the class of 1964--a group of nearly SOO individuals, each operating at a different tempo. Needy Famlhes Christmas Baskets for the Red Cross Above: Yearbook Sales Below: Journalism Board We are in the closing moments of our ninth grade year. We are filled with the hope of conquering fear and obtaining success. We see before us two roads. We find we have a decision to make. There is one road that is worn. Many a traveler has traveled this road because they were afraid to set their own tempo. But the other road shows few footprints for only a few individuals have traveled this road. Soon you will wander through this world. There will be times when you feel that you will stumble and fall but if you have found yourself and set your tempo you can smooth the bumps in the road. You will be an individual and you can help yourself. You will remember your teachers whose influence may never stop in your life---whose devotion and concern have lifted us upward. You will remember your friends who have walked beside you in sorrow and joy. It would be very difficult to live without their love. Life also has loveliness to sell---loveliness which is the face of Godg and in life you will find beauty. Time itself will grow beautifully dim.
