Most of us entered SA HS as seventh graders. We walked the steps of the unsure, the searching. As the years passed we found, by the inspiration of our faculty, that our steps were to be steps towards success. It was not easy, at times it was not enjoyable, but we forged ahead. Each step led us towards our goals. In this yearbook you will see what steps can be taken at SA HS. Perhaps you will find an inspiration to guide your own steps. Most of all you will find honor the foundation for your steps. 'u 4 In all area of learning our school endeav- ors to help each student attain his potential. These efforts are clearly seen in our faculty, building, activities and curriculum. In every way SA HS strives towards our gaining a foothold on the steps to success; it is our IN- SPIRA TION Excellence in scholarship should be the primary goal of every Smethport Area student through our teachers and counseling staff and programs like Na- tional Honor Society, A FS, and Nation- al competitive examinations, we find the motivation to develop in SCHOLAR- SHIP 6 7 8 Smethport Area has sought since its founding to try to give every stu- dent the opportunity to assume lead- ership in some activity. The success of all activities rests upon the willingness of students to assume individual responsibilities; believing that this helps stimulate and develop charac- ter. The prominence of the school is seen in the fact that the students can continue to improve through the steps they take towards CHARACTER and LEADERSHIP 9 Our pride in Smethport Area Junior- Senior High School prompts us to take in- terest in the functions of our school. There are many ways in which we are privileged to serve it, from individual efforts to the many organizations. Just as it is important to as- sume constructive roles in society, it is the responsibility of every student to take an ac- tive part in SCHOOL SERVICE 10 II Students find that not all learning is confined to the classroom. STUDENT LIFE Six years of seasons, and seasons to come We begin with summer, and have lots of fun. BOROUGH OF SMETHPORT 14 Winter 20 Our steps move ... up that steep incline That draws us ever closer to graduation time And though our paths lead each their separate ways We’ll remember the ending of our beginning steps all the rest of our days. 21 Our administrative staff strives constantly to improve the education of Smethport Area students to prepare them for a successful life. A DM IN I STRA TION Superintendent Harry Jr This volatile year of 1968 evidenced many changes. Any change, even for the better, is always accompanied by discomfort, frustrations and the possibility of failure. Let us all become what we were created capable of being. As it has been written, Do noble things, not dream them.” I trust that fcach of you will always engage in activities which will stimulate your imagination, improve your perspectives and develop into a creative, con- tributing person. 24 High School Principal Fred Zampogna Congratulations to the Editor, and Staff and Adviser of the Nunundah for a final documentary record of the activities of the school year. You have an annual for which you can be proud. You, your teachers, and your Principal have had the honor of instituting many, new experimental innovations, etc.—some successful. The Board of Education, your parents, and the people of the Smcthport Area School District have provided us with much new equipment, changed rooms for meeting places for work on these innovations. How- ever, these do not make a good school They become a good school only when students and teachers work together. The gates of learning arc open to you. Dedicate yourself to the work and learning which will open the door of opportunities that await you when you graduate. Smcthport Area High School has achieved an educational milestone in a complete school plant and a comprehensive educational program. To each of you, best of luck and good wishes for a successful year. 25 Board of Education Conrad F. Michielson, DDS David Pytcher Mrs. Anne Yoder 26 Neu member to be appointed Beverly McGavisk and Sue Ro$si Eleanor Abplanalp 27 Steps are directed along the right path through their efforts. Aiinjvj MRS ANNE M. ANDERSON, M S. Guidance Counselor Guidance From seventh grade up, Mrs. Ander- son has helped, not only guiding our steps in course selection, but with per- sonal problems as well. As seniors w-e probably appreciate her work more than ever; because through her efforts we arc prepared to take the giant step into our future. Special Education It takes a special type of person to teach those who have problems in learn- ing. To help prepare these boys and girls to fit into our society and to lead useful, satisfying lives a special type of communication is needed between the teacher and student. Driver Education In Driver's Education we learn safe driving habits, knowledge of the laws and to be an asset on the highway. Physical Education Athletic conditioning provides a fine outlet for our excessive energy and high spirits. We not only learn to work as a team through our gym course but gain satisfaction in personal accomplish- ments. Through a variety of new' activities and sports we learn body coordination, team spirit, physical fitness and all around good sportsmanship. In the end it might have been easier to sit on the sidelines and watch but it would not have been nearly as much fun. MRS ANITA D JOHNSON, B.S Girls' Physical Education MRS LARRY G CLARK, B.S MRS JEANNE CALDWELL, R N Health I and II Home and School Visitor MRS MAE C. FOLEY, R N. School Nurse Health Dispensing aspirin, checking our aches and pains, whenever an emergency arises, it is our nurses to whom we turn. In our health courses we are provided with information to promote good physical and men- tal health. We become aware of both our good and bad health habits. Good health is essential before we can take our next step. DOMINIC A ALFIERI, M Ed Physical Education 31 Art We have fine art facilities in our school. Students in the junior high have the privilege of working with many media in their classes. Some areas are sketching, painting, rug-making, sculpture, pottery making, silk-screen techniques, printing, and lettering. Advanced art is a senior high elective w-hich meets daily. Students who arc very interested in art find this class both instructive and interesting as the)- refine their skills. There are two art clubs, one junior high and one senior high. Those participating find enjoyment and education in projects, art appreciation, and field trips. Music SAHS offers a wide and varied music program. A majority of the stu- dents are involved in one or more music activities. Every person is offered musical instruction free of charge on one of the many school-owned in- struments. The junior and senior high bands provide enjoyment for all in their concerts, parades, and football shows. A new addition to the senior high band is the color guard. Each majorette and color guard member received a flashy new uniform this fall. General music classes provide a background and appreciation for every student. The senior choir is working towards new- choir robes. Students who achieve well have the opportunity to participate in district, choral and in- strumental festivals. ANTHONY E. BRZENSKI, M S. Coordinator Instrumental Music MRS SHARON A HUDAK, B.S. Jr. and Sr. High Art SHARON JEUTTER, B.S. Instrumental Music GERTRUDE WITTER, B A Vocal Music Language Reading and Library Our language department gives us an opportunity to broaden our understanding of people the world over. French I, II and III, Spanish I, II, and III and Latin I and II, are offered to the students. In this day and age it is not enough to be proficient in our own language, we must be able to communicate our thoughts and ideas to people everywhere. Reading courses are offered in our seventh and eighth grades. Through reading we are able to increase our understanding of man and benefit from the experiences of others. Our up-to-date library makes it possible to share the experiences, thoughts and achievements of many other people and provides us w'ith the facts and research material needed to broaden our knowledge in everything imaginable. MRS RHEA B. FRANCISCO, B.S Reading LARRY G. MILLER, B.S. French GLADYS JAMASMIE, M A. Spanish BETTY BROCK, B.S. Librarian 33 English In this our second year of team teaching we have accepted this method as a better way of teaching and learning. The method of imparting knowledge through team teaching exposes you to a variety of teaching methods as well as teachers. As upperclassmen, we are introduced to great literary works the world over, better composition writing, an extensive vocabulary, interpreting and analyzing that which we read. Through our English training we are able to communicate our thoughts and ideas in w'riting as well as speaking. We are living in a society where the spoken communication is often as influential .is that which is written. LANCE LAVERNE LEWIS, B A. Our speech class provides us with the fundamentals of communication, the use of body, voice and good listening habits, good speech making in everyday conversation and for special occasions,—learning to listen—to think about—to understand and to evaluate. GEORGE S. APALISKI, B.S. Senior High English 35 Vocational Agriculture Students selecting one of the many agricultural programs offered in our high school are preparing for employment in today’s most important industry'—Agriculture. It is obvious that agriculture is in need of young people, well-trained in scientific methods and technological know-how. To meet this need basic training is provided at our school level through the various Vocational Agriculture Programs. The vocational agriculture course of study includes instruction and train- ing in the following areas: Poultry, Dairy Livestock, Conservation, Farm Crops, Vegetable Gardening, Forestry, Ornamental Horticulture, Farm Management, Human Relations, Agricultural Resources, Agricultural Me- chanics, Related Science, Economics, Marketing and Agricultural Business Opportunities. Courses are adjusted to meet student, community and agri- cultural occupation needs. Industrial Arts LEWIS CHAMBERS, B S. Vo Ag. Industrial Arts courses help to provide information and experience, aiding the student in the selection, use, care and repair of the products in industry with which he is associated. It involves the use of materials, tools, processes and products as well as language arts, science and mathematics. Through industrial arts the student develops an interest in vocational activities of a constructive nature which may be a help in pursuing a vocation enjoyable to him. RICHARD F MALUSON, B.S. Arithmetic and Gen. Math One of the most significant objectives of math is to teach logic. By providing thorough and careful training in concepts and techniques, mathematics prepares the students for the- needs that related fields may require. With more students interested in computer education—they will need math. The curriculum not only serves the function of training students in basic mathematics, but also for providing more advanced training for those who are capable. Our math courses encompass General and Modern Maths, Algebra I and II, Intermediate Algebra. Geometry. Advanced Math and Business Math. To meet the needs of the future our math program must provide us with the proper background in all fields so that whatever direction we go, whether it be college, business, trade school or just working for ourselvtt, we will be prepared and more likely to succeed. Our school offers general courses such as General Science, Earth Science, and General Biology which pro- vide the necessary' background. Using the concepts learned in these courses, the student understands and becomes more interested in the world around. For students who wish a deeper understanding of the Sciences, BSCS Biology, Chemistry, CHEM Study, Physics and Organic Chemistry are offered. These prepare the student for still further work at the college level. Included in all science courses are laboratory periods. In these sessions the students learn to observe, reason, and sift informa- tion. Students are taught to look more deeply at the common things, as well as at complicated reactions. JOSEPH V. BRANCATO. Many areas of home making are considered; each is directed towards a better understanding of home life. In junior high the courses teach basic skills, the girls sew, cook, and clean in the home-like suites. They spend a great deal of time in formal and informal discussion of family re- lationships, personality, child care, and home management. The study of home economics in the senior high is elec- tive. The basio covered are similar, but in more detail. Budget planning, child management and training, tailoring, upholster- ing, canning, and entertaining are among the subject areas covered. MRS KATHRYN HARVEY Home Economics, Jr. High MARYON PAINTER, B.S. Home Economics, Sr. High 40 Business Education An excellent business education is given at SAHS. By means of detailed courses such as Business Law, Recordkeeping. Office Practice, Shorthand, Typing and hard work our students become the best prepared young men and women in the area. Students who desire training outside of the classroom can partici- pate in on-the-job-training. This year twenty-two stu- dents are participating in the program. The shorthand classes have a new and valuable- machine to aid their studies. The Classmaster Dictat- ing System allows each student to work at his own pace and thus learn more thoroughly. The basic geography course is environmental studies. Two years of American history give each student a fine background in the knowledge of our nation. Ancient history informs us of life, its problems and accomplish- ments. We learn of our government in courses such as Problems of Democracy and Civics. Other areas of study such as non- w'estern cultures, recent American history, general w’orld history, and current events help SAHS students to meet and achieve a good life, in this, our world. Seniors OFFICERS . Kathleen Peterson, Secretary Susan M. Peterson, Treasurer Edward Housler Co-President Rebecca Gustafson Co-President John Thomas Co-President Though our steps after graduation take us in many different directions, we will always cherish the fond memories that were ours alone—the Class of 1969. Suddenly, then, it started. The confusion, the uncertainty, the mass bewilderment and everything that went with our first get- ting together as a class. Our first election of officers really united us. We began to recognize faces that would soon become our best friends through- out our school days. Eagerly we worked on our Homecoming Float and won hon- orable mention with the reenacting of the Building the Shawmut. With brand new officers and Harrisburg as our goal we stepped out as a class who was going some place. Where? We weren't quite sure but we were on our way. Harrisburg never looked so far away as when we were told we would have to finance the trip individually. Freshmen at last! Now at least we had a name and were allowed to select an attendant for the Homecoming Court, and finally our float won a prize. As Sophomores we were still underclassmen but at last we were in Senior High. Our float “Jack and the Bean-Stalk” w-on third prize. The highlight of our Sophomore year was our annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. The Prom, The Prom, The Prom . . . were our only thoughts even as the year began. Our plans were for the biggest and best Prom in the history of the school. And when it was all over— The Garden of the Gods” was acclaimed the most successful Prom. After class night we were officially Seniors. This w'ould be our last year together. All of our projects were very successful, but nothing will take the place of our edition of the yearbook. 46 47 KENNETH BAILEY LEONA BAILEY DEBORAH BARRETT ... Ere we forget all the joys that were ours today. Prom As Juniors the moments we will remember most are those of our Junior-Senior Prom— May 10, 1968— The Garden of the Gods. It truly was a garden for the gods. At each glance the pages were turned back in history to the pillars, chariots and foun- tains of ancient Rome. A seventeen piece orchestra from Mansfield State College, The Esquires, was one of the highlights that made our Prom unique. Our king and queen, Chester and Britt, were crowned as a cascade of balloons and gold- en crowns swirled around them and the band played The Cor- onation Waltz. In true Roman fashion a candlelight buffet supper was served. We continued our night of festivities at the post prom party. Endurance records were set as the party ended with a six o’clock breakfast. Garden of the Gods—a night of dreams come true. 77 Homecoming 78 Ing Queen I Homec {Susan Peterson Connie Cullen Junior Attendant Kay Me A nallen . Everyone voted for Li’I Abner, Daisy Mac and Mammy and Pappy Yokum in the true spirit of the hillbilly. A country music group and appropriate decorations transformed the gymnasium scene into an old- fashioned barn dance. Each girl was out to get her feller’ and we hope she did. The team came back from a pre-league loss at BCCHS to defeat their opponents in seven consecutive games. Although well prepared and in top physical condition the Hub- bers were overcome in the few remaining moments of the final decisive game with Port Allegany. This wound up Smethport's football season with an impressive 7 and 2 record. Ed Housler was a linebacker on the first team of The Big Thirty. There are so many enjoyable things we have done and more yet to come. We won first prize again with our Homecoming Float, The Hubber Dragon. We want to thank our class sponsors, Mr. Miller, Mr. Valenti, Mr. Sample, and Mr. Brancato for their help. Our representative in the queen’s court was Connie Cullen. We are having another first this year with our production of The Miracle Worker under the direction of Miss Sandra Johnson. Patty Griffin and Linda McGary starred. Class rings have come, the prom is on its way, and soon we will be seniors.
