Hugh N. Lunn WORDS OF WISDOM He left the past year's dwelling for the new, Stole with soft step its shining archway through, Built up its idle door, Stretched in his last found home, and knew the old no more. - Oliver W. Holmes SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Mrs. Eleanor Abplanalp Secretary Once again it is a pleasure to congratulate the Nunun- dah Staff, Mrs. Lombard, faculty advisor, and Mr. Carruba, art instructor, for the publication of an outstanding yearbook. These are not idle thoughts. I believe this fine educa- tional endeavor truly represents the new era of growth which we are now experiencing in the Smethport Area High School. The live and devoted teachers who compose the faculty of this high school are sharing many and varied educational experiences. The physical and psychological environment so conducive to proper learning is being evidenced beyond expectations in this fine new building. Our Nation as brought forth in the recent election must always be a nation of responsible individuals. This is per- sonal with each individualg however, a responsible person is a well educated person. The good school, therefore, is an institution which puts forth a maximum effort to give every prospective citizen that quality education so necessary to a rich, full life. Each year I can well say we are improving and moving a little closer to attaining this ultimate obiective. HIGH SCHOCJL. Our Alma Mater has given us many happy memories which we shall cherish for the years to come. As we look back, we can remember the first time our class was together as o group-the Harrisburg trip, including a tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield and Hershey Park and a visit to the capitol building. We were new to a new school as freshmen and proud to be the first freshman class of Smethport Area Junior-Senior High School. The Sadie Hawkins dance highlighted our sophomore year. A rustic atmosphere was lended by the persons of Lil' Abner, Daisy Mae and Mamm and Pappy Yokum, andthe dance was a great success. Blue Hawaii , our colorful homecoming float, won second prize. Our Junior year we received our anxiously awaited class rings. Bowling l908 was our entry in the Homecoming O O parade. We were filled with pride on May 9, 1964 when we unveiled Grecian Odyssey as our lavish prom theme. Proud of our past accomplishments as a class we entered our last year. We were expectant of a successful senior year, and all our hopes were fulfilled. Our Christmas Ball was a great success. Our trip to New York City, financed by three class proiects - magazine sales, the sale of Christmas items, and the class play, was a memorable experience. We were especially fortunate to be able to attend the New York World's Fair. Awards night, class night, baccalaureate and, finally, graduation will be the last events of our senior year. We shall never forget the wonderful class spirit that carried through all our years together. Soon, however, our ways will part, and the time will come to say good-bye to our Alma Mater . Those chosen to lead our class through our eventful year were the following officers: President, Rowena Fay: Vice-President, Robert Cosper, Secretary, Julie McKeirnang and Treasurer, Donna Armstrong. Our student council representatives are Barbara Chase, Gloria Wright, Robert Cochran, and Philip Griffin. Due to the hard work of the class members, we have been very successful with our floats for the Homecoming parades throughout our high school years. In the eighth grade, we took first prize with The Twilight Zone . ln our sophomore year we won second prize with The Burning of the Court House. We have been very fortunate in having very helpful class sponsors. This year's are Mr. Gates and Mr. Bucarelli. With hard work and sincere effort, we shall have a successful and unique Junior-Senior Prom. As our senior year approaches, we are looking forward to our New York trip and graduation. Now, in the first year of Senior High, our class is doing very well. As in the past, the class is represented in a great many activities. Mr. Romani and Mr. Valenti are our capable sponsors. The first major class activity we had was the 8th grade Harrisburg trip. This trip was financed by the sale of items by the students. Third prize was won by our homecoming float that year. During our high school years, the class has given many dances. This year, according to tradition, we spon- sored the Sadie Hawkins dance. The class is proud of the first prize it won for its homecoming float World War lII . The prom and other activities lie in our future. The student council members are John Hertlein, Carl Nelson, Susan Brown, and Roi Ann Gustafson. The class officers elected this year are as follows: Timmy Hess, President, Rodney Kelly, Vice-President, Bruce Thomas, Treasurer: Sue Ann Moore, Secretary. In view of our past accomplishments and good class spirit, the future of the class of 67 looks exceptionally bright. In the seventh grade, we had the experience of having different teachers. With the help of our class advisors, Mrs. Francisco and Miss Randall, we held three successful dances and entered a float, Mashed Potatoes , in the annual Home- coming parade. Last year, we sold candy, cookies, stationery, Easter rabbits, Seneca Highland newspaper subscriptions and S.A.H.S. pins to help finance our trip to Harrisburg. Our big money-raising proiect that year was our movie, Spencer's Mountain , which was a great success. The trip was enioyed by all, and we feel our hard work was well worth the effort. This year, we entered Smethport the College Town as our float in the Homecoming parade. Laura Lee Burdick was our attendant on the Queen's Court. The big event for us was the annual Thanksgiving dance. Our class officers this year are: President, Theresa Jarrett, Vice-President, Clara Parker, Secretary, Donna Rossi, and Treasurer, Brenda Michielson. Cathy Donovan, Sabina Fay, Jack Mead, and Milton Wright were chosen as our Student Council representatives. Our capable class advisors are Miss Himes and Mr. Cimbal. We are looking forward to our future activities, the Sadie Hawkins dance, the prom, the New York trip, and graduation. It provides an opportunity for students who have had or would have difficulty with various subiects in other classes by giving them an opportunity to work at the level and speed best suited to their abilities. Each student receives instruction on an individual or small group basis in English, Arithmetic, Spelling, Social Studies, Reading, Health and Science, and Citizenship. Senior High level students may enroll in the vocational agriculture or vocational home econ- omics courses. Junior High students take industrial arts and home economics. All students take art and music from faculty members in those departments. There are seventeen students in the Special Education class, including four seniors who will graduate this year. During each school year, we make several field trips to various local points of interest, have many classroom projects, and, finally, a class picnic on the last day of school. The Special Education class is a class of opportunity and we are proud to take part in it. Special Education students are shown with their re- spective classes. llfl 'Wfmfiwmg Q '-fx lie' Q 1 In lf, E 'E x 9ff 'si uvfrnzwezaf-cg-,aww my wg, - if SPORTS s VARSITY FIRST ROW: Thomas Hanson, Richard Foes, Lawrence Minnier, Timothy Chase, Joseph BVDWVL Tl1e0d0Ve l'lYde, Al'l7l 0f1Y PIUCEY, Steven P0ll0ClM TCVVY Palmefi l-e0 'U d l-UWVGYIC 5WeeleYi J0 '95 Houck, Bren' V0SSlf-lf, Ddniel Nichols. The only two losses were inflicted by teams that finished the season undefeated. The opening loss to Bradford Central Christian was a heart-breaker for everyone. On fourth down and long yardage, with the score tied at 7-7, the Ramblers scored the winning touchdown on a freak play, pulling out the game with a I3-7 SCOFE. After this opening loss, the Hubbers really got going with wins over Coudersport, 26-0, and Otto-Eldred, 52-l3, before losing another heart-breaker to Sheffield, I3-6. In the fourth quarter, with the score standing at 7-6 in favor of Sheffield, the Wolverines scored from one yard out for the deciding touchdown. This loss meant the Allegheny Mountain League title went over to Sheffield. Following this loss, the Hubbers were to lose no more. They went on to win over St. Marys, I8-I2g Ridgeway, 33-l2g and over Port Allegheny, our arch-rival. ln the fourth quarter, after having stopped themselves most of the game, the Hub- SCOREBOARD S.A.H.A. 7 B.C.C.H.S. 26 Coudersport 52 Otto-Eldred 6 Sheffield I 8 St. Marys 33 Ridgway 6 Port Alleghany I 9 Portville 32 Emporium 86 OPP. This win was the third in a row over Port for Coach Donovan's Hubs, the only time in the history of this great rivalry. Coaches Jim Donovan, Clarence Strable, and Neil Bailey had good reason to be enthusiastic about the coming football season as there were seven veterans of two previous seasons plus four other Iettermen from the previous season returning to the squad and several J.V.'s who were to play important roles in the coming campaign. The Iettermen for the I964-65 season were: Jim Hauck, Wal- ter Rees, Dick Orlandi, Bill Ford, Joe Rossi, Ted Hyde, Dan Nichols, Dave Murray, Larry Minnier, Jim Thomas, Tim Chase, Bill Grega, Brent Vossler, Tom Hanson, Rich Faes, Joe Sweeley, Tom Tessena, Tony Placer, Paul Hergenrother, Clark Brown, seniors, Steve Baker, Mike Taylor, and Jim Olson, juniors. Ready for take-off. On Your Mark! Mr, Strable and the gang. I think you beat the gun, Dan. Big, bad Tom. ,Ag .il Track is the big sport in the spring of each and every year. The hopefuls come out to try their luck and the experienced members of the squad try to retain their positions on the squad. Most of the boys going out for track have lifted weights and have done exercises for months previous to the opening of practice. Such marks the opening of track season at Smethport Area High School. The 1963-64 squad was young and lacked experience. Thus, they lost more meets than they won. This year we hope will be different. With most of last year's squad returning, the track coach, Clarence Strable, looks for a winning season. The boys are willing to prove his predictions to be true. The Smethport track team meets such schools as: Port Alleghany, Bradford, Kane, St. Marys Public, and Elk County Christian at St. Marys. They meet schools from all parts of Northwestern Pennsylvania in the District 9 Meet. Last year the Hubbers placed fourth in the rugged competition. BANK Mary Lee Raymond, Donna Armstrong. The school bank is for the 'student body and facilitates the proper functioning of the various activities in their financial affairs. It is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday activity period. During this period, the bank handles all deposits or withdrawals for the various classes and activities. To make a deposit the treasurer must first make a list of the amount of currency, coins, and checks. This deposit will be double- checked by Mr. Schell, Mary Lee Raymond, or Donna Armstrong. Then a deposit slip will be made out in triplicate, one for the bank's records, one for the account for which the money was deposited, and one for the treasurer's records. When a treasurer wishes to pay a bill, he must ask for a requisi- tion to be filled out in duplicate and signed by the advisor and the treasurer of that activity. After he returns half of the requisition, and the check is written it is signed by Mr. Schell and the Principal, Mr. Zampogna. It is then placed in the sponsor's mailbox. Deposits are made every Thursday in the Smethport Area Joint High School Activities Account at the Hamlin Bank. Sharing in a delightful task: Donna Armstrong, Mary Lee Raymond, Mr. Dale Schell. All the girls try to follow the slogan: Pure thoughts, Pure words, and Pure actions. The club colors of red, white, and blue exemplify sacrifice, purity, and loyalty. Our club this year has a larger membership than ever before. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Lom- bard and officers, Cherylene Howard, Wanda Greek, Beth Ann Sayers, and Karlene Keller, it is sure to be the best yet. It takes more than a good adviser and good officers to make a fine club, it takes members who care about their club and the work it does. We all feel that this year each member strived to make their club the best. To send our officers to Grove City College to attend the Officer's Training Conference each year we have various money-making pro- iects. This year, we sold stationery and photo albums. During the year, we carry on service pro- iects such as visits ta the county home and our contributions to World Service. In this way, we try to live our Tri-Hi-Y purpose. FIRST ROW: Carol Silfies. The drill team is a new organization this year but a very promising one. lt will add, in future years, color, spirit, and dazzle to many school events. Before the formation of the team, girls had opportunity only to partici- pate in such activities as band and cheerleading. Now, they have an excellent opportunity to take in this activity which will add much to our sports program. The team is composed of over fifty members and works with flags, pom poms and hoops in the drills. 1 ' s . 6 I ' I Wx . ' Gloria Nelson. FOURTEENTH ROW: Kathy Bish, Laura Anderson. Gold and white centerpieces and menus and napkins with Grecian motifs carried through the theme of the evening at the banquet. A scene of breathtaking beauty greeted those later attending the prom. The deep blue of the Aegean night, rows of columns entwined with ivy, a beautiful mural of cool blues and greens with stately Grecian temples high above a white- capped ocean transported everyone to the romantic world of a Grecian terrace, a garden sequestered from everyday world. As the candles flickered on the tables, an ocean breeze could almost be felt and after the music played by Ray Arnold and his orchestra, the sounds of a gentle Grecian night could almost be heard. The hours spent thus withdrawn on a Grecian Odyssey to a far-away, iomantic place will remain ever in the memories of those who attended. Kerr Ted's Barber Shop The Tourist-Trap A MESSAGE ERCDIVI OUR EDITOR The Nunundah Staff of 1965 has completed another yearbook for the board of administration, faculty, student body, operating personnel, parents, and alumni. For the board of administration our book shows that through their decisions and interest we have been given many educational facilities and opportunities for gaining a high school education. Their efforts have given us many well equipped classrooms, laboratories, music and art departments, and home economics and vocational agricul- tural sections. They have provided courses of study for us whether we be college bound or headed for the everyday working world. For the faculty we have tried to show the many ways their willingness to help and their active devotion have guided us as a student body toward our future paths. Their worthwhile advice has helped us overcome our many troublesome problems. We are grateful to the faculty for furthering the development of our personalities, and bringing out the best in the worst of us. Through their co-operation they have organized and helped maintain our numerous activities. For the student body we have provided memories in this book from cover to cover, whether they be in personal contact with a teacher, a friend, an activity, or a sport. May these remembrances be always near, ever dear. For all others who have helped in any way toward the operation, maintenance, and continuance of our high school, we are sure you will find some personal contact within the pages of this book. I, as editor, wish to thank Mrs. Dorothy Lombard, our advisor, and the Nunundah Staff, for their splendid co-operation and hard work concerned toward the completion of this yearbook. May you be iustly proud of the part you played. X 5 TRY ' 'x X , Q ,D -A ,K w ' 'Q P. f .... ri A I, .-77- X -h -- W I ,314 1 1 ...I xaty V gnu' .Ah .- --, ,, ' Us :ii 'S ' tus -..- - EY?
