Johnson l904 - 1957 We, the students of Smethport Area Joint High School, realize perhaps better than anyone else just how much Mr. Johnson has been missed. Somehow he combined all the desirable traits of our fathers, ministers, and teachers. We will always hold deep in our hearts the memory of his ready advice and constant help. This memoriam is only a small token of our esteem, and only one of the many ways his works will be rememberd. 4 wrt sssc M 'X 'Z e 3 we if A Foreiofxon 5 Ded' Odom TABLE OF Student C Advertising 9 I -gg Autographs '-4 ounci I 6 Administration and Faculty 7- I2 Seflforg HOUOFS 13-35 Senior 3 36 class Wiffk 37.39 Senior Snaps 4 0-4 1 42 Sjuhlbrs o Juf5fOD7o'eS 43-46 r 49,54 55,61 HfQhlfg1,,S ' of fhe A4 . Here at Smethport, some of these things are: the Senior Play, the Senior trip, the Yearbook, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Not the least of these is the publication of the Yearbook which becomes at once a record of students, teachers, Board of Education mem- bers, and school personnel in general as well as a retainer of many memories. Therefore it becomes the privilege of each graduating class to produce a book ot lasting value, and to conduct themselves in such a manner that senior events are outstanding. The Senior Class of 1958 has shown superioraualities in all fields of endeavor, and this edition of the NUNUNDAH is an excellent example of that superiority. I congratulate them and wish them success in the future. 8 . Q I V -. Q1 QE H Jw in Qi 7: ffifiki S ,Il if .1 if hz 1 Q f , W? , .,,., Mg J 1 Q 1,, V P, QE Q gt FACULTY Agdetion och- . . . Our representatives to Student Council were: Dick Larson, Beverley Van Gorder, Ann Megivern, and Lois Grohe. Louie Neely served as the Student Council President. We wandered about the halls wondering where to go, and we also were looking at all the new faces. As we looked at these faces, we may have wondered whether this boy or girl would later become our closest friend. We gradually came to know each other and held our class meetings. We elected for our class President, John Hummel, Vice-President, Charles Johnson, Secretary, Susan Shelander, and Treasurer, Georganne Wright. For our Student Council Representatives we chose Janet Peterson, Marcia Johnson, Linda Cutting, and Jo Ellen Brown. At the end of the year we held a class picnic at Cuba Lake. Our Sophomore year held in store for us more excitement. We held the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance with Happy, Ed, and Jack playing for us. This turned out to be very successful. Later in the year we held a Hoe down and many record dances. Our class officers for this year were: President, John Hummel, Vice- President, Charlie McCarthy, Secretary, Sandy Stilson, and Treasurer, Linda Cutting. Our Student Council Representatives were: Marcia Johnson, Linda Cutting, Janet Peterson, and Audrey Stratton. Now, we are Juniors. We have lost only a few of our members since our Freshman year. We have elected for our class officers: President, John Hummel, Vice- President, John Recny, Secretary, Georganne Wright, and Treasurer, Linda Cutting. Our student Council Representatives are: Marcia Johnson, Janet Peterson, Linda Cutting, and Jo Ellen Brown. Plans are under way for our Junior-Senior Prom, and we have received our class rings. 44 Vincent Acre Nancy Bells Donald Bickford Shirley Bloomster Jo Ellen Brown Sam Costa Linda Cutting Walter Daniels Patty Defibaugh Bob Dickinson Jody Digel Phyllis Ferraino Tom Field Leroy Freer Almon Ford .ludyann Gongaware Tom Gorrell Grantland Gruver Barbara Harris Gloriana Harris Shirley Hess Patty Hendrickson Dixie Hewitt Harold Hitchcock John Hummel Mildred James Myra James Charles Johnson Kathleen Johnson Marcia Johnson Bob Kline Tom Larson Bonnie Lathrop Lynda London Barbara Ludwig Neil Madison Nancy Marsh Dennis Maynard Charles McCarthy Judy McDowell Richard McDowell Patty McGee Sally McKalip Bob Morrison Luther Mullen Sandra Nick Sue Partchey Janet Peterson Jack Petruzzi Mary Placer John Recny Judy Rice Larry Rice Joseph Rinehart Fay Robertson Barbara Rose Walter Russell Susan Shelander Rosemary Siegel Jane Stiles Sandra Stilson Dan Stoneking Audrey Stratton James Tanner Carolyn Tarbox Nancy Van Dyke Donna Very Bonnie Williams Rosalie Wolfe Ida Work Georganne Wright James Yeager I if ti! ?' .. , , , - f---i-- sf-..,,.i 1 1.44 'f fs in 'iw-us. -isrlr if- f f- ?,,,.gi EW, me swf Eg WEE W W Q , MH! We were represented by l3 boys on the football squad, ll boys on the basketball team, 7 girls on the cheer- leading squad, and several point winners on the track team. Gail Guenter, Gini Gosney, Fred Lasher, and Joe Newhouse represented our class on the Student Council for the first half term. As our outstanding social event of our sophomore year we sponsored the Sadie Hawkin's Dance which was held in the gym on November l5. We had a fine band, lots of decorations, and the dance was declared by many to be the most successful Sadie Hawkin's Dance they could remember. During our Freshman year we started the practice of having a record dance after home basketball games on Friday night. They were all a success. During the remainder of our high school careers we hope to prove more fully that the class of '60 may be depended upon to perform our duties to our Alma Mater. 50 Tom Abbey Jim Acker David Anwyl Jerry Baker Maxine Barnett Jim Barr Carol Barrie Kathy Beckstro Lee Brace Mary Britton 'X v XA! VARSITY FOOTBALL The Hubbers, under the capable hands of their new Varsity coach, Jim Donovan, and assistant coach, Jack Pennington, started practice at McCoy Stadium on August l9, l957. They practiced hard and were rough and ready for their first game. They proved this by the scores of their games. The first game was postponed because of the flu epidemic among ours and St. Bernard's players. After the boys started rolling, we won our first two games: Bernies l2-O and Coudersport l3-7. Otto really took a beating when we defeated them 39-O. The Hubbers ran up another big score when they defeated Sheffield 4l-6. The Smethport team anticipated their fifth victory when they headed for Renova and they got it 32-O. The Ridgway game was wiped out by the flu so Coach Donovan scheduled a game with Warren since they were also idle because of the bug. A Class A school didn't bother the raging Hubbers for they crushed Warren 38-9. Another new team, Cuba, New York, was scheduled for our Home- coming game. What a shame if our Homecoming should be spoiled by a defeat! The Hubbers sensed this and won the game 29-6. Then the big game with St. Marys, who were also undefeated. Our downfall came here when the Flying Dutchmen defeated the Hubbers 27-O. The last game with our great rivals, Port Allegany, was the biggest upset of the season. The Gators defeated the Hubbers l2-O. Willie Cunningham and Chuck Cooper, our rugged fullback and quarterback respectively, were the members of the team selected for the Allegheny Mountain League All-Star Team. These boys are pictured in the circles above. Congratulations to the Hubbers, Coach Donvon, and Assistant Coach Pennington for the best season in many, many years!! Our marching band this year was one of the best ever. lt is composed of the members of the Senior Band. The marching band's faithful at- tendance at all the games despite the rain and cold was very encouraging to the boosters and team, Displaying perfect co-ordination with their unusual half-time performances, they left an impression which will long be remembered by the community. Included in the six-march program were Hesita- tion Strut and Wagon Wheels, but their serenity was always shown when they concluded with our Alma Mater . SENIOR B ND ln the spring of 1957, our band competed in the District Forensic Festival at Clarion, Pennsylvania, and the superior rating enabled all lO5 musicians to travel 600 miles by bus to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to participate in the State Festival. The rating was excellent and the trip was one to be long remembered by all, especially our capable director, Mr. Partchey, or Prof to us. In the mid-summer our annual Block Party was held and a great success it was. The money made, Sl8O, went into a general fund used to buy the equipment necessary for such an organization. Even during the fall months our band was kept active. Since the foot- ball field received new flood lights, enabling the games to be played in the evenings, our loyal band spirited the players on to many a victory. During the winter we practiced hard for the Spring Concert, which was held April 2l. This was a joint affair with Hamlin Township in which the proceeds were contributed to the Carl W. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. At about the same time, 9 members participated in District Band, held at Coudersport. Our officers are: President, Wayne Church, Vice-President, Carolyn Wells, Secretary-Treasurer, Ruth Bennett. Prof reluctantly admits, The band will suffer greatly when the present Seniors graduate and it will take some time and a lot of work before those vacancies can be satisfactorily filled. 78 512. The Vested Choir, which is composed of students from the high school, has accomplished much in this past year. ln the spring of l957, the choir attained a superior rating at the state contest ot the P.F.M.L. in Bethlehem. This year, we started by giving an assembly for the students in October. After a few months of hard rehearsal, the choir presented the Sacred Christmas Concert. Among the songs sung were O Holy Night, Silent Night, and What Child is This. On January 3l, nineteen of the choir members participated in County Chorus which was held in Port Allegany. Seven members attended District Chorus held in Montoursville in February. One of the members, Bob Morrison, went to Oxford to attend State Chorus. In our annual Spring Concert we sang Once in Love With Amy, America Our Heritage, Roots and Leaves, and Blessing, Glory, Wisdom and Thanks. Solos were sung by Wayne Church, Kay Newton, Jack Petruzzi, and Bob Morrison. ln late March some of us journeyed ta Clarion to participate in the District contest of the P.F.M.L. The final appearance of the Choir was made at Baccalaureate and Commencement. 80 MIXED ENS-ENIBLE Back to Front: Monty Jennings, Pat Confer, Wayne Church, Ann Megivern, Bob Morrison, Marcia Johnson, Kay Newton, Kathleen Johnson, Sue Partchey, Carol Kelly, Jody Digel, Jean Parker, Dana Fizzell, Jack Petruzzi, Janet Peterson.
