DEDICATIO T0 We dedicate to Our Parents This edition of the NUNUNDAH. To show our thanks for all they've done, 'Tis through their efforts our graduation will come. They tried to teach us right from wrong, Working beside us, confiding sorrows and song. They willingly helped us Sponsor dances and sell bake stuff. We will never be able to repay these debts, Or return in full the many other assets. As we seniors travel our separate ways, With treasured thoughts of our school days. 4

FOREWORD The NUNUNDAI-I Staff of 1957 believes that this 10th Anniversary edition of the NU- NUNDAI-I marks an occasion when it is appropriate to reveiw the origin of one of our High School's finest traditions---its Senior Annual. NUNUNDAH in the present series was first published by the class of 1948. This class chose the title NUNUNDAH because they wished to help popularize this traditional Indian place name. The title had been used once before by the class of 1939 in a special year book, but it was not until nine years later that our year book became an annual publication. The NUNUNDAH of 1948 quoted the following from The History of McKean, Elk, Cameron and Potter Counties: The Allegheny River enters McKean County in the west center of Liberty Township, coming down from the heights of Potter County, receives the waters of the Portage at Port Allegany, and of Nunundah Creek south of Larrabee. Many years ago, Q10 J. Hamlin, completing his historical notes of this county wrote that Potato Creek is named from the Indian work Nun-un-dah, which means potato. Mr. Hamlin stated that Indians long ago lost some potatoes in the stream from the up- setting of their canoe and they called it Nunundah. In 1832 he placed a potato before an Indian school teacher, asking for its Indian nameg the teacher replied Nunundah.' In later years he interviewed members of the Cornplanter and Seneca bands, who gave it the same name. Up to the period of Mr. Hamlin's death he always regretted the action of his fellow citizens in adhering to the anglicized form ofthe euphonious Indian name 'Nunundah' . 3
