And her victory won. Hail to Smethport! Hail to Smethport! We are ready to defend her May she never die. And her color's, too. Hail to our dear Alma Mater Orange and black are floating o'ver us Hail to Smethport High. O'ver our school so true. FOREWORD The NUNUNDAI-I Staff of 1957 believes that this 10th Anniversary edition of the NU- NUNDAI-I marks an occasion when it is appropriate to reveiw the origin of one of our High School's finest traditions---its Senior Annual. NUNUNDAH in the present series was first published by the class of 1948. This class chose the title NUNUNDAH because they wished to help popularize this traditional Indian place name. The title had been used once before by the class of 1939 in a special year book, but it was not until nine years later that our year book became an annual publication. The NUNUNDAH of 1948 quoted the following from The History of McKean, Elk, Cameron and Potter Counties: The Allegheny River enters McKean County in the west center of Liberty Township, coming down from the heights of Potter County, receives the waters of the Portage at Port Allegany, and of Nunundah Creek south of Larrabee. Many years ago, Q10 J. Hamlin, completing his historical notes of this county wrote that Potato Creek is named from the Indian work Nun-un-dah, which means potato. Mr. Hamlin stated that Indians long ago lost some potatoes in the stream from the up- setting of their canoe and they called it Nunundah. In 1832 he placed a potato before an Indian school teacher, asking for its Indian nameg the teacher replied Nunundah.' In later years he interviewed members of the Cornplanter and Seneca bands, who gave it the same name. Up to the period of Mr. Hamlin's death he always regretted the action of his fellow citizens in adhering to the anglicized form ofthe euphonious Indian name 'Nunundah' . 3 DEDICATIO T0 We dedicate to Our Parents This edition of the NUNUNDAH. To show our thanks for all they've done, 'Tis through their efforts our graduation will come. They tried to teach us right from wrong, Working beside us, confiding sorrows and song. They willingly helped us Sponsor dances and sell bake stuff. We will never be able to repay these debts, Or return in full the many other assets. As we seniors travel our separate ways, With treasured thoughts of our school days. 4 Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mrs. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mrs. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. QUR P RENTS and Mrs. Hollis Andrews ana Mrs Wayne Barnett and Mrs Milton Barr and Mrs Ward Bickford and Mrs Paul Campbell and Mrs Richard Chase and Mrs Robert Cleveland Ruby Connors and Mrs. Alex Cunningham and Mrs. Jake Daniels and Mrs. Leith Dennis and Mrs. Russell Denning and Mrs Ralph Dickinson and Mrs. Albin Faes and Mrs. Steward Goodwill and Mrs. Albert Green and Mrs. L. Remember, upon your graduation, the diploma that you will receive is merely a sym- bol of your having completed a required coLu'se of study. The true meaning of gradua- tion comes with maturing years. The enriching experiences and fun of your high school training and activities will become much more real and self-evident as you pursue your higher education, trade, or occupation. By virtue of having completed your education in the high school, you are enabled to live a happier, more useful, complete life and you are better citizens of your com- munity, state and nationg your diploma-is not a symbol, but its true meaning is em- bodied in you, a fine competent American youth, well prepared to assume and think through the many responsibilities of your generation. The cast consisted of eighty-five students. The first act revealed us as shy, self -conscious freshman making friends and planning our Freshman Frolic. The second act found us one step higher on the ladder of success. We were proud to be entering Senior High. We elected class officers who were to retain their position during the following three years. We sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Day Dance which was a huge success. The third act saw us as confident juniors who looked up only to the seniors. We ac- complished much that year as we purchased our class rings, held numerous food sales, and traveled to Hawaii for our Prom. The play was soon to be concluded with the cast reduced to fifty seven. The opening of act four displayed us as Seniors nearing the end of our association with Smethport High School and the class of 1957. We had a wonderful year. If you could once again enact it, what would you choose? An athletic event, the Halloween Hop, your first date with that certain someone, the Christmas Ball, an activity, Twerp Week, signing of the NUNUNDAHS, your last Prom, Class Day, New York Trip, graduation night? As you reminisce what is your reactiong relief, triumph, success, or tears? We,as a class, are proud of our accomplishments which we obtained by the guidance, devotion, and instruction of the faculty. We are now ready to begin the climb on the ladder to success. But in our hearts and minds we will always remember our dear Alma Mater. 14 BARNETT, SHIRLEY MARIE Young and Foolish Shirley is the class devil who is always seen smilingg She has quick eye for Shorthand. I am the halls of SHS. Beneath all the pencil marks and drawings are my ears. Ihear things like this: Who's taking you to the dance? Wasn't that a good game last night? and Got your history done? In 1954, I decided to keep close track of that group of frightened kids starting their high school career as freshmen. During their freshman year the only money -making projects they held were baked food sales, and of course, dues. After school was out in June, they left me behind and went on a class picnic to Cuba Lake--lots of fun, at least that's what they claimed as they came back in September for an interesting Sophomore year. As Sophies they were more ambitious and held two dances, both successful--the Sadie Hawkins Dance and the Sock Hop. They were honored by having two sophomores--Phil Hauck and Chuck Cooper--repre- sent them on the Varsity Basketball Squad. Also for Wayne Church's attendance at District Chorus. Finals, summer vacation, and again on September 5, I opened my doors to the same old gang, now Juniors. Money-making projects included selling School Daze Autograph Books and joining forces with the other three high school classes to put on the Holiday Ball which, Ihear, showed a profit. With ears alerted Ihear comments on the Prom, the Banquet, and methods of raising money. I smile to myself to think that in another few months all talk of sponsoring the Prom will be behind them and just as with other classes Ihave heard over the years, the topic will be, Just wait until we 're Seniors. 42 JU IDRS , , -A, .ag 0 'Q 1 xx' tu .fi 6 I 'X' 'all K ,I ,, 5? .... Coach Wayne Mader had great expectations for his Hubber squad this year. His boys had the makings of a championship team, and under the supervision of Coach Mader, they started the seasor. with a 12 -'7 victory over St Bernards. Our guests the following week were the Coudersport Falcons, who had defeated us the previous season. However, the tables turned and we found the l'Iubbcrs on top, with a 20-6 victory. Our first away game of the season was a night contest with the Otto Terrors, It was a battle all the way, but we were nosed out by the Terrors with a 13-12 victory credited to them. Next, the IIubbers met the defending champs, Sheffield, Wolverines, and defeated them, 18-13. Our game with Renova showed the lIubbers were playing a poor brand of football, as the game ended, with a 12-12 tie. Our second defeat of the season was at the hands of the strong Ridgeway Elkers The Hubbers played a terrific second half, but could not overcome the Ridgeway team. The game ended with the score, 27-14, in favor of Ridgeway. Homecoming found us battling Youngsville, but the Hubbers again went down in a close one, 7-6. We then met the undefeated St. Marys Flying Dutchmen team. The Hubbers played one of their hardest and most terrific games of the season, but lost, 14-O. Our last game was with our traditional rivals, Port Allegany, at which the Hubbers again put up a tremendous fight, but were defeated by the Gators , 20-13. fill Q- ... gm. . The Sinethport High School Varsity Team, under the capable guidance of Coach Vesber, opened the season im- pressively and were favored to win the North Tier Championship. However, the team didn't quite live up to its expectations. The lIubbers defeated Otto, Oswayo Valley, Coudersport, and Port Allegany to finish the first half of the League as champions. ln the second half they were defeated by Otto, Port A llegany, and Coudersport. The tie between Port Allegany and Smethport was played at Bradford Junior Iligh Gym where Port Allegany emerged as the victors by a large margin. The starting five for the season wereg Phil Denning, Captain: Fred Larson, Chuck Cooper, Phil llauck, and Louie Neely with Bob Lathrop and Jiggs Comes substituting. We were very proud that three of these boys made the All-Star teams. They were: Phil Denning, First Team, Chuck Cooper and Phil llauck, Second Team, It can be said with modesty that our Varsity team played good ball all season, because competition was ex- ceptionally keen this year we did not win the North Tier League. 66 J YVEE FOOTB LL X I 1 W X ClIlU1L113IlQlI11, Lccl, liuxumcl, Abhcy, MCC:111I1y, Smchlllnicr, hllioll, Kline, MI. Under the able leadership of our President, Glenn Cunningham, Student Council of 1957 has achieved much. With the co-operation of our faculty advisor, Mr. Robert Glarner, and the twenty-one students in Student Coun- cil, the following accomplishments have been made: A name plate for last year's President, Jackie Green, was orderedg hall plaques were chosen for 1956's Vale- dictorian, Debbie Willson: and Salutatorian, Larry Strattong the Assembly Program was set up for 19583 and a Suggestion Box was placed in the main hall for students' ideas of betterment of our school. A Pep Club was formed to promote better school spirit. HUBBER buttons and pennants were 8180 sold to pro- mote school spirit. A student bus transported students to away football games. A trophv case was made to dis- play many hard-earned trophies in Athletic, Musical, and Scholastic contests. lay Vee Cheerleaders were se- lected for the first time. Also, for the first time, Student Council sponsored Homecoming Day. A lost and found department was organized for the benefit of the students, and a Faculty-HUBBER Basketball game was played for the students entertainment. We staged a very successful Talent Show in the Spring. As we look back over the year, we all agree that Student Council did a fine job of governing our school activ- ities.
