SSD O l N! . ......f W f ll 4 QQ,... f ,g I q -fjllumnne clone., fXf Sll lllll The year is l956. Graduation is upon us. This yearbook willsoon be the only link between the past and the present. A nostalgic memento of carefree school days that will be at first accorded the highest place of honor in our rooms and then will be pushed from table to bookshelf, from bookshelf to bottom drawers and Finally--in a cleaning out of our old school- day mementos--will be packed, together with an old football letter and diploma, in o cardboard box and stashed away in a dusty attic, to be forgotten. Then one day we stumble on it in a search for something else and sitting on the attic floor, the days we spent together will come back once more. What is it that you'll remember---the first thrill of being a freshmonp the time the extra point was kicked at a crucial moment, the pride as the school band copped first honors at a contest, the special something you felt as you walked in the first snow flakes of winter, the warm applause as the final curtain of the senior play descended, or the dream-world beauty of the Junior-Senior Prom as girlsin pink con- fection dresses brought forth a proud smile from special beous? As you sit there on the attic floor, and a flood of memories suddenly crowd the present from your mind, do not Forget that all these things were and are truly ours and shall be kept alive in this book. ' September IO, l955, found the Hubbers playing on the rain swept Bradford field against the St. Bernard Ramblers, the Ramblers held the top end ofa 7-6 score. Again on the road the Hubbers came out on the low end of a 20-O score in a game played in the 96 degree heat on the Coudersport Field. The next two weeks the team fared no better as Sheffield and Gtto took the winning column by 33-0 and 7-6 scores. Revenge was ours the next weekend as a 20-l2 score showed a victory over Renovo. The Hubbers broke as a very powerful Ridgway, Youngsville, and St. Marys were topside on such scores as 27-7, 47-O and 32-6. The next weekend saw a large crowd at McCoy Stadium to watch the usual rivals, Smethport and the Port High Gators, battle it out. After gaininga7-6 lead in the first quarter, the Hubbers fell behind I3-7and tasted an eventual 33-l3defeat. 72 Jlllllllll V1-lil l'l'Y F00'l'IlALL J. V. FOOTBALL The Baby Hubbers had an average season this year having a record of one win, Five losses, and one scoreless tie. The scoreless tie was agreat moral victory for the boys as they held the Bradford Frosh team, which Finished the season undefeated. The J. V. team Showed plenty of fight and good hard football to the fans this year. You will see many of these players on the starting lineup of the Varsity. J. V. lineup was: Ends . . . . This year the Smethport Hubbers, coached again by Mr. Vesber, were the defending Champions of the North Tier League. The Vesbermen entered the annual Kiwanis Club Tournament at C l a rion over the Christmas vacation and came out third place victors. There were eight teams competing in the tourney. The team lost its second game of the tournament to top-seeded Shannock Valley High School, who finally emerged the winners by defeating Johnsonburg in the final game. ln the first game Semethport defeated Clarion, which is coached by Mr. Norman Zwald, former athletic instructor at Smethport. There were seven seniors on this year's squad. They are Skip Rote, Bruce McKay, Clair Burdick, Bill Simms, Rodney Hauck, Blaine O'Connor, and Wayne Burt. Rounding out the twelve-man team are Chuck Cooper, a talented sophomore who sees plenty of ac- tion on the starting team, Phillip Hauck, a sophomore, and three iuniors, Phillip Denning, Eric Johnson, and Harry Comes. The only starter from last year's team was Mel QSkipD Rote, who has been the team's leading scorer and backbone of the attack. This is a team which never gives up and has proved very good in the league, be- cause of their never die efforts and their superb defensive play. The Vesbermen did not equal the previous team's record of 21-l , but have still carried on the good name of S.H.S. and have been very powerful in the North Tier League. They emerged the victors of the first half of the league. The team consists of three freshmen and nine sophomores. Their captain, chosen by the boys, is also a sophomore, Fred Larson. They are coached by Mr. Rhoads, who has done an excellent job. He has tried his best to teach them good sportsmanship along with the pla S. Y Practice makes perfect is an old saying and to prove this all you have to do is go down to the g m any night between 6:45 and 9:15 and you'll see the J.V's. plugging on the court For all they're worth. The Five boys who usuallystart the games are Fred Larson, Dick Burdick, Louie Neely, Phil Hauck, and Russell Denning. These boys along with Bunny O'Connor are the top six men For points. These six boys play more than the other members because they are better than the average rarely miss a practice, and they really work for all they get. We have some good material in the second string for our J.V. team next year and some good material For the Varsity for the next three years. Our Baby Hubbers have learned that basketball is Fun, that good sportsmanship is needed, and to win isn't the only reason they're out on the Floor playing. We're sure that all the Fans have loved watching our J.V's. play and the encourage- ment we gave them by cheering helped them to win.
