'M 23+ if 1 ' 1 1 -ld The Student Council has played an active part in Smethport Geofge Shifey High School forthe past six years. Howard Hull was the first pres- ident, and Mr. Rugh was the first faculty adviser. Since that time there have been seven presidents: Courtney Howe, David Hallstrom, Tom Kohn, Don Shirey, Bill Angell, Bob Lindquist, and George Shirey. Mr. Glarner became the adviser in l952. Through the leadership of President George Shirey, and the supervision of Mr. Glarner, the council has been very successful this year. Some of the accomplishments of the T954-55 Student Council are: Some members of the football squad were sent to Port to visit their school the day before the game to try to create better sportsmanship between the two schools, Snooks Cooper and Jackie Green were sent to the State Student Council Convention at Abington, Pa., an efficient hall patrol system was set up under the leadership of Alan Wright, paid assemblies were ordered for next year, pennant pins and string ties were sold by the members of the Council. The other officers of the Student Council besides President, George Shirey are: vice president, Alan Wright, treasurer, Snooks Cooper, and secretary, Jackie Green. We would like to thank the Student Council members for helping to make our school better through student government and we are especially grateful to Mr. Glarner for helping in many ways to make our Council successful. 14 A n un 1-1 C , ml 'lu .I ln... is H lu f . Looking back from the vantage of thistwelfth year we recall the problems, pleasures, foil, laughter, and tears which these years have brought us. The knowledge, experience, and confidence which we have gained in the passing of these years is the foundation of our future. . Many successful days are past. Through the guidance, devotion, and instruction of the faculty, we crossed into new fields to assume a greater dignity--and with this dignity, a greater responsibility. We, as a class, are proud of our accomplishments in fellowship, scholarship, and activities. We hope that, after we are graduated, we will continue to develop, to grow in the spirit instilled in us, and to be true sons and daughters of our Alma Mater. Barndt Vice -president B. McKay President The old halls of learning greeted us, the class of 56 as we assembled once more for a year of fun and study. Of course we elected the cream of the Crop as class officers. The highlight of our iunior year was the receiving of our class rings, in December. A spring feature which brightened an already dazzling year, the Junior-Senior Prom, was a big success and will long be remembered. Our athletic-minded youth participated in all the sports. Newspapers acclaimed various outstanding victories achieved by these boys. We foresee a bright future when we return next September to assume our places as seniors. Randall H. Comes Kent Smith In September l953 the curtain rose on a four act play, The Success Story. This cast consisted of eighty-five students. The first act was the beginning of a long and gradual climb to a successful climax. The first scene revealed us as shy, self-conscious freshmen making new friends, and getting acquainted with new teachers and the school in general. The second scene we were planning our Freshmen Frolic, which was successful for a first dance. The last scene, most important of all during the first act, had now come. This was to choose the courses that would aid us in the careers we chose as our life's work. We had a successful freshmen year, be- cause ofthe fine cooperation of the class and very capable class officers. The second act began the following September when we were up one step higher on our road to success. lt saw us proud to be in our first year of senior high. ln the first scene we elected class officers: Kent Smith, Harry Comes, Connie Larson, and Judy Randall--president, vice- president, treasurer, and secretary, respectively. During the second scene we planned the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. This dance was a huge success. The third scene and othersare yet to come for the completion of the second act. lt is our goal to finish all four acts with hopes of achieving success from all the unusual experiences, fun, and nard work we have put forth. 46 1 ,ai- Andrews, J . -. l QQ' 'I 'af' ix' 'QP' 1-5 Andrews, S. Lathrop O'Connor Mr. Mader Shirey Cunningham Pe truzzi Hickey Goodwill Parker Hauck Angell Moran Siegel Dunn Larson Barr This year, the Hubbers, under the guidance of Coach Wayne Mader, started out strong against St. Bernards and broke into the winning column with a i9-O victory. The following week we played host to the Coudersport Falcons, who had beaten us for 5 years straight. The Falcons staged a terrific second half, and rolled up I2 points. However, because of our l4-point first half, led by our hard-running halfback, Dave Petruzzi, the Hubbers managed to stay in the winning column. Then polio struck in Smethport, and our season was temporarily brought to a halt. The regular schedule resumed when we met the rugged Youngsville team who managed to score a 2-point decision after a very bitter and hard fought battle, 27-25. On October 30, our annual Homecoming Day Game was played against the St. Marys eleven. It was cold and windy, but this didn't hold down the Hubber's spirits, as burly little George Shirey with his 3TD 's led the team to a 34-7 win. The next Saturday on a rain-sogged field, every football strategy they tried seemed to work as Port Allegany rolled over SHS, 39-7. On Armistice Day, the Smethport eleven went to Otto, Here, once again, it looked as though the Hubbers would go down in defeat as Otto led I3-O at the end of the first quarter. After our bad beginning, the Orange and Black put on a great show, stacking up 27 pt. to Otto's 7 during the last three quarters. Final Score, 27-20. We take this space to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of the squad--the defensive players, offensive line, and most important, the reserves. No team can be successful without them. Although only a Class B school, the Hubber trackmen beat all of the best Class A schools in Northwestern Pennsylvania and Southwestern New York State. The Hubbers finished the season with their fourth straight District IX PIAA Class B Championship, McKean County Championship for the first time in recent history, and were the first team to beat a strong Warren High School team in 20 meets covering a three-year period.
