REYNOLDS The closing bell has rung: The swishing sound oT books and papers and coaTs is heard: The noisy, disordered jumble oT everyone Trying To leave The room aT once dominaTes The scene: and Then The conTusion is over. I'm leTT alone in The quieT soliTude oT home room. The warm aTTernoon sunIighT sTreams in Trom The back window, and my ThoughTs wander To days long gone by. A pleasanT haze seems To darken The room unTil my eyes are no longer able To disTinguish familiar objecTs. The hazy misT slowly clears and There beTore me is a jolly group oT boys and girls, recognizable buT yeT remoTe. Why iT's our class!-As Treshmen-They look as if They are having a wonderful Time as each new Thrill oT high school meeTs Them. I look away Tor a momenT and Then gazing back I Tind a new scene. The same boys and girls are dressed in TaTTered jeans and calicos. Why iT musT be Sadie Hawkins' dance. The group oT sTudenTs Tades away and a new seTTing Takes Their place. A number oT darkies are siTTing on a sTage and wiTh Their boisTerous merry-making are keeping Their audience in laughTer. The sTage quickly changes To a Japanese Tea Garden, respIendenT in loTus blossoms and soTTIy- glowing lanTerns. A passive Buddha is gravely keeping waTch. And Then The view changes To The suburbs oT London, and There is eccenTric Uncle Fred wiTh his loony Triends chasing abouT an old English manor. The scenes are changing more rapidly now, and I geT only a glimpse OT a ChrisTmas Ball, a preview oT class nighT, and Then graduaTion. The IasT Two are very dim and The deTaiIs are noT Too clear. The noisy, merry group fades Trom sighT and sound Till I can hear only The sIighTesT murmur and see a TainT blur oT color. Then The room is darkened. Once more I look abouT me and I Tind mysehfalone again wiTh The warm sunlighT playfully scaTTering IiTTIe sunbeams over The Tloor. WiTh a sigh OT regreT I pick up my books and move To join The happy group ouTside. A Teeling in- side Tells me ThaT someThing is losT which will ne'er be regained. Our childhood musT be buried wiTh our memories, and we musT hasTen ever Torward To our goal as happy adulTs in a democraTic world. I 6
