ANNE ANDERSON At various times throughout our high school life we, the '49ers, have been obligated to Mrs. Anderson for her help and advice. As class adviser she has been generous in giving her time and effort to make our projects successful. She could always be relied upon to put her artistic ability into decorations for our numerous social activities. For this and for all the help she has given us in making this year book a success, we gratefully and respectfully dedicate the 1949 NUNUNDAI-I to Mrs. Anne Anderson. 5 CONTENTS I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XXI XII. A LNIA JOHNSON, ANNE ANIJIERSON We are about to leave the place Where the major part of our last four years has been spent. To all of us this period has been one of achievement to a greater or lesser degree. No one can accurately prophesy what will be our lot in the future. Parents, friends, and teachers with their Wider experiences, will perhaps be our best advisers. May the members of our class be successful in their various endeavors. Wlien we leave these portals of learning, we must not forget that it was within them that we received our academic training. Although we shall be scattered over all the world, there will still be many memories to bring our attention back to our high school days. Perhaps some of these will be the Prom, the athletes, the musicians, the Flash or some other event in which the '49-ers took such a prominent part. We leave behind to our sponsors, our faculty, and our school our highest esteem and appreciation. May we, in the words of the angel to Abou Ben Adhem, not be found wanting. 12 ANDERSON, ALY'A GRETA Gret.va Senior Dramatics 4g V csted Choir 3, 4g Chorus 2, 4, Triple Trio lg Flash 2, 3, 4. R osiz NAPOLITAN, TED V iasmm Finally came the day when the members of the Class of '50 could legally adopt the name of upperclassmen. The Hrst outstanding contribution of the class was a fine array of ten gridiron stars. They comprised the backbone of the S. H. S. undefeated team. The high- light of the season was the picturesque Homecoming Event. On the night of the goblins and witches, a highly successful incident was stagedg the junior Jamboree. At intermission, several of the girls presented a floor show. Another contribution was the Hswell gangi' of cagers. Two players were con- tributed to the jayvees, including the captain. Four members of the championship Varsity and the chief medicine-man were provided by our class. Also added to the cause was our class adviser, Mr. Vesber, who coached the Varsity to victory. When we returned from Christmas vacation, our long awaited class rings were there. Although they were long awaited, some disappeared rapidly! Still another achievement, the musicians contributed by the ever helpful Class of '5O. Eleven are in the ranks of the bandg while eleven are members of the Vested Choir. The last big event was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom sponsored by the juniors. This was a huge successg obviously, as everything undertaken by the Class of '50 has been and will always be. 26 JUNIOR CLASS Ai'1?:l .. A' L X i n K. McCord A. Mealy J. Duffy 4 D. Hallstrom S. Ross SEVENTH and EIGHTH GRADES Our seventh grade consists of forty-seven pupils this year and eighth grade of thirty. There is considerable talent in the combined groups, especially in music. They are well represented in the band and junior choruses, and three eighth grade girls are in senior chorus. ' In junior Dramatic Club we have striven for better expression. We have had fun learning poems for choral speaking. A group of seventh grade girls gave several selections in a pleasing manner at the Travelers Club. A play was given for the grade children at Christmas time, and the seventh grade gave a St. V alen- tine's play. Part of our work was the study of Shalcespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Some of the seventh grade are learning selections from Patrick Henry's Liberty or Death. Before the end of the year we hope to do some of our Work for an assembly. Mary Ellen Ross, the one ninth grader who joined our group, has been outstanding and very helpful to the club. , r 35 Wh GRADE . RUGH The matter of giving the students an oflicial voice in the administra- tion of the school has been contemplated for many years. This issue finally led to the adoption of a student council plan for the 48-49 year. Using the national constitution as a pattern, the law of such a council was formulated and adopted by the student body. The members of the council, fifteen in number, were chosen by their classmates. The council is headed by Howard Hull, who was elected president in a campaign which had its similarities to genu- ine politics. Mr. Rugh served as faculty adviserg he was also instrumental in the establishment of the system. Various projects were undertaken, meeting with various degrees of success. It is hoped that in the future the council will aid more and more in the improve- ment of our school. With joint cooperation between admin, istrat.ion and the students, this end can be obtained. , 38 E 5 E fc i fg E. 2? ? E i P . A .1 -,c.f -N .. - . L . 4, ,ii ' 5 WWW ' .. , T, an V 3 fd . Miss Day assisted us in our work at holiday time when Thanksgiving Baskets were sent to needy families in our various communities. At Christmas time toys and clothing were distributed. Many of the toys were made by the boys in shopg others were painted and repaired before packing. Our annual dinner honoring new members was held in January. All the girls look forward to this gay event. Guests at the County Home are given Easter Baskets. These are all made by members of the Girl Reserves. 49 DISTRICT ORCHESTRA SMETHPORT DISTRICT FESTIVAL HOST The Central District of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Associa- tion niet in Smethport january 13, 14, 15, for its annual Orchestra Festival. The festival participants arrived Wednesday afternoon, evening, and Thursday morning. The residents of Smethport and vicinity opened their homes to the visitors with their usual gracious hospitality and the itinerant ministrels reported unanimously a grand time. A vigorous program of rehearsals under the direction of Bernard Mandelkern terminated with a brilliant performance Saturday night of a rather difficult pro- gram of orchestral literature. A matinee performance was presented Friday afternoon to approximately 900 boys and girls. A number of schools in the county sent upper grade students to the Friday concert. Saturday night, a capacity audience of nearly 1000 was delighted with the high degree of musicianship displayed by the orchestra of 126 players. 50 A , . -1 Hwtmgggs-gn, '7 'N'? 759anpun ' ' Utmfzvwngq, ' ' f 'N1wl0vv,u-vu' ' 'f1V cv no . 1 avr.-fvf-Pv?x1:ii!0?!v-ty,-x,v,g,,7I.-, IW., I ,I I - -z ony, F' A 4 ' W ' if l ' . . t 1 2 Q ' f I. The Chorus made its Hrst appearance between the acts of the Tom Sawyern operetta and again at the Sacred Concert presented at Christmas. Of the songs we sang We particularly liked Sylvia, This Is My Countryf' I Love A Parade, and L'The Snow. Besides hard work at our many rehearsals, we had fun singing three-part harmony in our all-girl chorus. New robes were ordered in the fall, and they arrived in time for our Christmas Concert. Everyone, both members of the choir and the audience, was very well pleased with them. Our Sacred Concert, on December nineteenth consisted of two solos, and Angels We Have Heard On High, Silent Night, and the famed 'KI-lallelujah Chorus by Handel. Vivian Hirsch sang the solo in Birthday of a King, and Ann Potter sang the solo in NOI1! Holy Night. We sent five members of our choir to District Chorus at Centre Hall, Pennsyl- vania, March third, fourth, and fifth. This was a great honor, and the choir was pleased that.so many of its members were chosen. They were Dorothy Jean Hauck, Dolores Witter, Robert Digel, Ronnie Johnson, and Ralph Brace. The Choir was very proud to have one of its members, Ralph Brace selected for All-State Chorus Festival at Pottsville March thirty-first, April first, and second. Thirty members of the choir participated in the County Chorus held in Smeth- port May fourth. Ronnie johnson took first place in the 'tty-outs for soloists and sang L'The Lost Chord. The Vested Choir climaxed the year with appearances at the Baccalaureate and Commencement programs. 55' JUNIOR BOYS' CHORUS JUNIOR GIRLS' CHORUS I CREED OF THE JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS' CHORUS Mrs. Maenhout is our shepherd, We shall not Willlt. Their record was one of the finest ever witnessed by Smethport High School as they drove to an undefeated season of six victories and a tie. They were great in their football ability and power, but most of all, they acted in a true sportsmen-like manner which is characteristic of true champs just for the records we will run down the schedule. T Coach Jay Elicker unveiled his team against a strong Coudersport eleven. This game was marked by fierce playing on both sides as S. H. S. finally came out on the winning side of the ledger, 13-7. ' The following week they tackled George junior Republic at Grove City, whom they easily trampled 24-7. Sheffield succumbed to the Hubbers 26-12 to make it three straight and the followers of this team began to realize that this team was off to a good season. Traveling to Renovo to participate in the contest for the Railroad Trophy, the Warriors of Smethport got a new experience as they played their first game under lights. A night game to them was no handicap as they proved this by coming out on the long end of a 12-0 tally. Homecoming Day with its ceremonies brought out the biggest crowd in the history of the school as the County Seaters played before 1800 enthusiastic spec- tators. The victims of their fifth consecutive victory were the Y oungsville team who just couldn't stop the Orange and Black, they went home suffering from a Z6-7 set-back. The traditional rivals from uthe banks of the Allegheny were the next ones to try to halt the powerful Elicker-men from S. H. S. They did their best, but it was none too good as Port was blasted 26-0. The finale came November II, at McCoy Stadium as the Hubers tried to complete the season all-victorious. Thcy met Kane in an evenly fought battle which turned out 7-7. In the estimation of the fans the team was superb. They showed their appre- ciation and admiration for the Hubbers by sponsoring a huge banquet for them. The results of the season may easily be summed up in the words of our capable coach, Jay Elickerg They had faith in me as I had faith in them. 61 JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL During the past season, Coach Frank Rugh led his team to a record of one win, one tie, and one defeatg considering the inexperience of the team, their record is a fine achievement. This year was the first time that Smethport has had a J. V. football teain and their record speaks for itself as a successful undertaking. Some of the players who have gained the needed experience will be varsity-men next season. ' They filet Otto for the first game of the season on the Terr0rs Held. This game was outstanding for its defensive play as the Hnal score of the game was a scoreless tie. The next team that they met was Emporium, whom they conquered 12-7. The Hubbers showed themselves as an offensive threat in this contest, outplaying their opposition. Their last game of the season was played at Emporium under lights. In this game the Raiders showed themselves the superior team as they took the Hubbers 20-7. 62' FOOTBALL BANQUET Two hundred people assembled in the Smethport High School Gym, December 11, to pay honor and tribute to Jay Elicker and his undefeated football team of 1948. This huge, gala affair was promoted and sponsored by the Down- town Coaches Club. Among the guests present were Johnny Nelson, toastmasterg Father Webster, speaker of the evening, coaches from surrounding schools, Howie Willis, Paul Griffin, Dr. Livermore, and some S. H. S. football players of former years. The program was started by Nelson's nightly broadcast over station WESB. He interview Coach Elicker, Howie Willis, and Dr. Livermore, then he went on to tell some of the highlights of the Hubbers' 1948 season. Father Webster gave an excellent after dinner speech, he held the interest of everyone throughout his entire talk. He alluded to the similarity between victories and defeats met on the gridiron and those met in everyday life. One of the more interesting parts of the program was the awarding of letters and gold footballs to the lettermen of the team. Approximately twenty members received these, with eight men having played their last season for S. H. S., as they graduate this year. Among those who will be missing from next years lineup will be Captain Jack Bishop, Jim Swanson, Tom Peeler, Bill Halpenny, Bill McGavish, Rudy Kohn, Dick Weaver, and Harold Irons. 63 VARSITY BASKETBALL Lettevfmen Howard Hull Fred Anderson Harold Hull Tom Peeler Dean Rice Norm Billings Kenneth McCord Dave Hallstroin Bill Youkers Position Guard Forward Guard Forward Center Center Guard Guard Forward N umber of Y ears Lettermevz Class 2 Senior 2 Senior 2 Senior 1 Senior 1 Junior 1 Junior 1 Junior I junior 1 Sophomore REVIEW OE THE SEASON As one's eyes slowly drift thru this book, moving leisurely from page to page, it is only natural that they should pause and linger for quite some time on this page. At the mere sight of it, something else transverses before our eyes, a vision of past glories of a past team. The first image that we see is Ted Vesber being appointed as head coach of the Varsity, taking a weak, inexperienced team and molding it into the exact opposite. The opening game of the season gave Smethport a preview of what was to come. The team was mainly defensively powerful, but it had an offense capable of exploding at any second. It wouldnlt be fair to the team if this page didn't include the records that they set for there isn't a single, existing doubt in the minds of anyone that it was the best team that has ever emerged from the halls of S.H.S. Following are a few of the new records established by this team: best season of 18 wins-5 losses, winning of I3 consecutive games, fewest number of consecutive losses QZQ, only Smethport team to reach the playoffs, and finally the distinction of being tied with Otto at the end of the regular season for league leadership. Next season should be very good as five lettermen return and good, prospective J.V.'s move up. Missing from next year's team will be Fred Anderson, consistent scorer, Butch Hull, versatile ball-handler, Tom Peeler, rebound artist, Jack Bishop, sturdy guard, and Captain Howard Hull. A truly fitting epithet for this team would be, Cherish in Defeat-Honored in Victory. 65 UNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Many people have heard that oft-quoted, familiar statement, the record speaks for itself. This fact never has been uttered in a truer sense than with the 1948-49 Junior Varsity basketball team of Smethport High School, for their record of 19 wins against only two defeats is emblematical of their accom- plishment. Much credit can go to Coach Bob Glarner, who guided and instructed them through their marvelous season. The J.V's. opened the campaign with a series of seven straight wins over their opponents. Returning from Christmas vacation, they dropped two games but swept the remaining contests to compile an enviable string of twelve consecutive victories. This -l.V. Squad was a team in the true meaning of the word. lt worked with a team-like precision, with everyone striving toward that ultimate goal which all teams seek, that of Victory. Some of these players will see action in varsity ball next year, and it is there that the past season's training will become more de- veloped and brought to use for S. H. S. in a larger sense. As the fans enjoyed following them during their past season as proteges, so will they watch them with a keener interest on the Varsity as they continue on their road to glory. 66 TO THE MEMORY DR ALVIE R LIVERMORE 189 1949 DOL XVIII IONIC BI R1 All NIBI RID IOR HIS DI I I' AND SINLI RI IYIIRISI IN IHI IOCAI SLHOOIS INIIHUSIASINI POR XII-III IILS XVXS LNLIAIVIFD, AND IHL I IXI RAIORL CUP IIXS BI I N A LOVI II D AV ARD POR BIANX XFARS of 5 - H .H . 4. , I , , 4. I-TALM-:NNY The Varsity S Club was .reorganized in the fall of 1947. To become a member of this club you must have a varsity letter in at least one major sport. The sole purpose of this club is to raise money for the senior jackets. The club chose 6 girls to assist in this. At the football games refreshments were sold, while at the basketball games only candy was sold. On November 11, after the last football game, the club sponsored a dance, which was well attended. This year's jackets are the most expensive ever to be bought. They are black jackets with an orange stripe down the sleeve, and orange trimmings on the collar and cudis. There will be a football or basketball on the back. They are also reversible. The following boys will be the lucky recipients of these jackets: Bill McGavisk, Tom Peeler, Jack Bishop, Bill Halpenny, Dick Weaver, Chuck McKeirnan, jim Swanson, Rudy Kohn, Harold Irons, Harold Hull, Howard Hull, and Freddie Anderson. Also four trackmen from last year: Morris johnson, Cork Hull, Don Mencer, and Jerry Covert. Everyone will certainly agree that these boys have well earned these jackets. 69 BOYS' BASKETBALL CLUB S GIRLS' BASKETBALL CLUB TED VESBIQR, Sponsor lE.I57ia'1A S, ' ' - ' ' ' , -, w - ' - 1 UA .ff-1 af - . ek 7:3535 , M3 W, Qiwsvu 1' A ,QNX ' 1' ,gg , MM CWD I, me M gwigdiw '. mug. ,N-...' , -I M' 151545121 ,f 1 3 f .. -- - 1 - , . There are many more that would be quite impossible to include: the story of how each day's work was completed and masteredg how hard everyone worked towards the success of the play and Prom. Yes, each and every student has his own individual story of success or failure. Our purpose was to create a book that we could look through in years to come and silently console ourselves that those were the happiest days of our lifef' We hope that we have not failed in this undertaking. May our work herein serve as a basis for your judgment. The U49-ers wish to express sincere gratitude to the following for their assist- ance in the production of this yearbook: Mr. Albert 1. Harrington, director of the advertising campaigng Miss Martha Colegrove for her generous assistanceg Mr. Ernest Monsch and the Smethport Chamber of Commerce for the use of the aerial photo of Smethport, and also to the many friends, patrons, and merchants whose contributions made this book possible. 80 MR.
