My ,fm .Qi LAC Presented By THE SLOCOMB HIGH ANNUAL STAFF Slocomb, Alabama With the passing of time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and fainter and then die away like the school day memories of our grandparents. We hope, that in this year's SIGMA ETA, we may bring back some of those lost echoes. Mr. and Miss Slocomb High, JUNE SMITH and DOUGLAS CAMPBELL, are symbolic of students at S. H. S. whose lives have influenced ours ancl whose imprint will remain among our cherished souvenirs. 2 We dedicate this 1957 Sigma Eta to COACH DAVID SNELL in a reciation of PP his congeniality, his loyalty, and his sincere interest in every phase of our activi- ties at Slocomb High. He is never too busy to serve as counselor, adviser, or friend His ready wit and his understanding of the young-in-heart have endeared him to us all. And so we say with a warm smile and a hearty handshake: Thanks, Coach! We think you're tops! -M U ,7'igi. f 64' 1' -o-5 , -V in I . I S X , , 3 I MRS. IDA BELL PHINNEY MRS. We have shared many things since that first day in the seventh grade, and we shall always cherish these moments to remember . There have been times of happiness and times of sorrow, but with the able guidance of our kind and understanding teachers, under the direction of our principal, Mr. J. B. Davidson, we are about to end our high school education. Here is a glimpse of each of our six years in high school. Although it was a pretty big change from elementary school to our first year in high school, we loved it and shall never forget it. lt took some time but we were soon used to changing classes. These people composed our Jr. 1 class: Royce Bradshaw, Wynell Tate, Jimmy Pitt Silavent, Sara Fondren, Martha Joy Battles, Martha June Farmer, June Smith, Jane Nell Davidson, Billie Grace Ketchem, Era Jo Harris, Patricia Waters, Robbie Fondren, Martha Jo Childs, Sandra Hidle, Tommy Roberts, Gerald Bowers, Ellen Bolin, Sarah Hughes, Maxine Clark, Keller Hollis, Huey Helms, Douglas Campbell, Joe Earl Helms, Danny Gouge, Jimmy Rex Gilley, Nelda Lott, Harold Holloway, Sue Fondren, Grover Smith, Joe Spivey, Harry Joe Phillips, Buddy Parrish, and Gerald Smith. Our home room teachers were Mrs. Elizabeth Watson and Coach David Snell. We really felt big because we sat right across from the seniors in chapel. This year we really felt mature. We were veterans in high school now--although we seemed to be the only ones who thought so. Sara Myers joined us from Hartford and Clayton Cox came from Malvern. Miss Norma J. Foster and Mrs. Flora Dalton had to keep up with us, it was no easy job, but they kept us straight. All of us were pretty good artists by the end of the year because Mrs. Flora Dalton made us draw the whole Alabama History book. The girls were separated from the boys, which we thought was a great tragedy. Frasier Clark came to us from Columbus, Georgia, and Addie Merle Clark from Malvern. Mrs. Kathleen Richards and Mr. Joe Earl Sellers were our Keepers . Billie Grace Ketchem was an attendant in our beautiful and color ful May Day Festival and Addie Merle Clark was Homecoming Queen. We had a large addition to our Sophomore class--James Bedsole, Rupert Gray, Kenneth Everett, Jimmie Lou Hall, Harold Barber, Leon Hall, Ann McClenny, Huey Brannon, Judy Grantham, and Elouise Merritt came from Malvern, Jannie Baxley, Nellie Lane, Ann Hamm, Bobby Flournoy, Lavaughf Phillips, Norman Jenkins, Jerry Adams, Eugene Holloway, Hattie Bass, and Sara Hall came from Fadette, Virginia Simmons came from Rehobeth, Helen Bottoms from Ozark and Charles Thorne from Tate Our home room teachers that year were Coach and Mrs. David Snell. All of us nearly drove them wild, but Coach Snell paid us back in Biology class. He made us learn the life cycle of every plant in exis- tence, and we won't even mention all the things we had to learn about animals, but we survived. June Smith and Ann McClenny were our favorites for the annual. This was a tragic year in our high school career. We lost two of our members, Keller Hollis and Lavaughn Phillips, in an automobile accident on February 13. This was a great shock and a great loss to our class and school. Michael Walker and Benny Lassiter joined us from Rehobeth this year. The Juniors and Seniors enjoyed a visit to Paris at our beautiful -Junior-Senior banquet, thanks to the efforts of Miss Celeste Foster and Mrs. Glenn Buttram, our Junior Sponsors. We all had awonderful time Our senior year is a big year for all of us. We have finally reached the end of our high school education. It has been a full year for every senior. Under the able guidance of our understanding and patient sponsor, Mrs. Ida Bell Phinney, we have made it through the year, and she has made itpossible for us to go to Washington D. C. and New York City. This, of course, is the high light of the ear and is enjoyed by all who make the trip. Billie Grace Ketchem won the school and county Birmingham New Oratorical contest and Martha June Farmer won the American Legion oratorical contest for the school and count . Douglas Campbell and June Smith were elected Mr. and Miss Slocomb High, and Grover Smith made the S. E.A. C. and All-Geneva County Football Team under the direction of our head coacl' Mr. Doyle Kizzire. Sue Fondren was Halloween Queen and Jane Nell Davidson was Good Citizenship Girl . Our class history would not be complete without mentioning Mrs. Annie Lorrie Stutts. She is always willing to help any of us in anything--anything we call on her to do. We deeply appreciate the many times she has given her time helping us. The untiring efforts of Mr. Jeff Strickland, our band director, and the helpful co-operation of Mrs. Helen Dalton in the publication of our school yearbook will always be remembered by the class of '57. Many of us will continue our education and man of us will go out into the various walks of life, but no matter where we go or what we may do, we will alway have these moments to remember .
