A Solid Beginning m other Nature graced Slippery Rock University with great weather for the first semester of 84 85 academic year with temperatures in the 50 s and 60 s through the months of November and December. It was at the beginning of the second semester that old man winter de cided to even the score by sending the temperatures in January and February down to the minus 20 degree mark with wind chill factors that ap proached the minus 70 s 3 There’s No Place Like Home Prior to the cold weather; Mother Nature Still looking after us, Homecoming became one of the greatest in SRC history. The theme of this years Homecoming was There's No Place Like Home . The Homecoming celebration began with the annual parade down Main Street with the Marching Rockets in all their glory. The N. Kerr Thompson stadium then held a pep-rally for the upcoming battle with the nation's sixth ranked team. NCAA, Division II Clarion Cniversity. The fireworks at the stadium took a back seat to the excitement of the crowd which then moved to the Cniversity Cnion for a dance hosted by the rock group Friction . 4 More To Do Than Study 8iown Me Cutctieon All Work and No Play 8 Once you become an upperclassman things get tougher. Classes and studying take up most of your time. You've grownup since the first day you arrived, the Rock is really your home now. You became involved, you tried things you never thought you would. General Studies blocks are almost filled, you now have to be gin work on your Major classes. By the time you reach your Junior year those jeans are now your favorite. 9 There was always something more interesting to do than study — party, go to a game or dance: anything was better than studying. Homecoming was a big thing: the parade, fireworks, tailgate parties and the game all brought friends together. Sometime around mid term you remember the real reason you came here in the first place. Cramming for exams, endless papers and proficiencies are the norm your first year. Your freshman year is like those new jeans you got: kind of uncomfortable until you've gotten them broken in. 50 10 Tis the Season . . . 11 Anticipation for graduation grows. You've put in your time. You want to test your wings. The last year Sen-ioritis prevails, which gives you the best excuse not to do something. The routine that made your life anything but boring the past four years is almost over. 12 13 As you walk to receive your diploma, the one you worked four hard years for. you begin to wonder where the years went. Remember the day your parents first dropped you off. the terror excitement you felt when you met your first roommate? Upperclassmen knew you were a freshman: they let you make a fool of yourself without putting you down because they remember what they went through that first year. The Rock became your new home . The first time you walked into the cafeteria and stood in line: you were sure that Rod Serling was going to announce that you were now heading into the Twilight Zone. You knew when it was Parents' or Visitation Day because they always served hot dogs. The food that had about six different names but was still the same old thing. You've finally made it. the tassel's on the other side. Mow comes the part harder than your first final, its time to say good bye. We may say good bye to the campus professors and friends but the memories and Spirit of the Rock will be with us always. 15 Student Life 17 unwa hat is the Rock?— buildings? — classes? — professors? — tests? — roommates? — Ora spirit that encompasses all of these and more? We came here seeking knowledge that would help us start lives of our own. some of us just out of high school and some of us with years of life already behind us. As freshmen and sophomores we all faced the disappointments of filled classes, confusion, and little colored cards that needed signing. We used to think that the upperclassmen were laughing at us. Yet now we realize, as upperclassmen ourselves, that they were only laughing at themselves and the memories they forged. It is in seeing ourselves, that the spirit of the Rock is born. Slippery Rock University is not a cold institution: It is a living. growing spirit — an invisible companion that remains with us throughout our lives. 19 There is alot more to the Rock than classes and study. Remember your first party? Remember Homecoming? — the sports? — the concerts? — the movies? — the plays? — the entertainers? — and those late night games of Trivial Pursuit? We have worked hard to reach our goals. No one can ever take away from us the memories of our experiences at the Rock — the friends — the classes — the professors — the roommates — the buildings and staff. A part of everything that constitutes Slippery Rock University leaves with us. Friends became brothers and sisters as we all aimed at that all important graduation. Comradery is big at the Rock. While Slippery Rock is not the largest university in the nation, we can all boast of the size of Slippery Rock's heart. This heart took all of us in and made us part of one family. 20 22 The true meaning of Homecoming becomes clearer each year of our studies . . . 23 24 25 26 27 new 28 29 Marching to the beat of the Rock 30 31 32 Homecoming Queen and King Tracy Wison and Mark Nardo 33 34 35 36 full time enrollment of 6.400 students was one of the largest in $R(J history. New programs and specializations were added to the curriculum this year. The Business Administration program was restructured to create three separate departments: Accounting. Economics Finance, and Management Market-ing. The Theater is now separate from the Communication Department. A Bachelor of Science degree is now available in Music Education. The “Writing Across The Curriculum was adopted and requires all students to take two writing emphasis courses in their major. f 37 rrj 38 39 We expand our horizons. We now have detailed knowledge of subjects we once could not pronounce. Though the path of our future may yet be unclear, we move forward better prepared to face the challenges of the world beyond the halls and classrooms of Slippery Rock University. 40 Si 41 43 Presenting.. Each of us. directly involved or not, had a place on every team and participated in every event. The Rock's spirit made us what we are — Proud — Strong — Giving — We are winners where there are no scores. We are the victors where no conflict exists. Only to life’s game do we stand as competitors. Remember — Our name will be strange or odd only to those who lack the understanding of the meaning of Slippery Rock. The Rock's meaning dwells within us. Records fell as our Slippery Rock Golf Team displayed the character and spirit that has made our team welcome at invitationals and tournaments throughout the country. Coach Albert Schmittlein exudes pride when, speaking of our team, he relates. Mo matter where our team goes, they hear. The Rock's here.' We all have to feel pride in the accomplishments of these golfers. When the all-time record was broken at Penn State by James Hagstrom. a part of us was there. Anytime and anywhere our team goes, they represent more than the athletics of the Rock. They represent exactly what and who we are — and — they do that well indeed!! “Our responsibility does not. as professors and coaches, end when people graduate. This from coach Schmittlein shows the dedication he has for his people. He credits the natural ability and hard work of the team members more than his own hard work, weekends away, and many hours helping someone correct a swing or a slice. Dr. Al Schmittlein is Slippery Rock in his dedication, attitude, and action. Coach Egli has had 35 team members, in his career, selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association's — All Area first team, including two from this year. Goal!! Score!! are words that have become familiar to junior-forward Jeff Quinn who led the attack having 16 goals and 4 assists. Defense on the other hand made our points count. Junior-goalie Adam Fredrick more than made points count by having six fantastic shutouts and an average of 1.186. Williams. 84 Winning four of its first five contests, it looked like SRC] would once again dominate conference play. However, a thinning bench and a tough non division schedule combined to create an insurmountable obstacle that kept our Men's Basketball team from making the Pennsylvania Conference Playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Injuries may have thinned the bench, but not the hopes of our cagers. as they diligently played on. The loss of graduating seniors like Mike Spanitz. Mike McConnell and Jim Stapleton will create an absence sure to be felt as these three were among the top five scorers this season. But. with others returning like top scorer Kevin Mountain Man Williams, the creative rebounder. Dave Timko. and the now experienced freshman such as Franos. Pullium. Jones. Women’s Basketball 86 Winning ten of its last twelve games, SRO's Women Cagers finished a season stronger than ever. The 1410 overall record hides the success and talent of our team and its members. Starting a season that began with 8 out of 10 games on the road, our lady hoopsters were a bit inconsistent. But. as the season wore on. they came back and finished with a winning season, stealing victories from worthy opponents. Sadly missed will be our only graduating senior. Kelly Kirkendall. whose baseline jumper. 11.2 ppg average, and her 150 rebounds contributed much to this year's success of the team. With women such as All American candidate Diane Walker, as well as L. Heilman. V. Long, T. Moynihan, S. Fuentes and R. Women’s Gymnastics 88 McCuWxoo Coach Lynn Spadine's Slippery Rock University Women's gymnastic team displayed the precision and grace that has become the standard for members of SRCJ's team ... Individual excellence by team members merged to give SRU's gymnasts one of the highest point averages ever. Senior Julie Morrow, sophomore Kathy O'Keeffe and Sonia Carter added personal performance and accomplishment to the team effort. Morrow ranked second in the PC and is a three time All American. Ralph Voit finished his season with an overall record of 26-12 and with Paul Lawson who finished 12-4 went to Oklahoma City to represent the “ROCK in the 55th NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. We could see that experience developing in sophomores such as Gary McHugh. Brian Laird, and Scott Brown. We felt the ambition of the freshmen like Marc Bartolomucci. Ed Burkhart.
