Delta Delta Chapter was established at the then Slippery Rock State College in 1970 Ever since. Alpha Sigma Phi has grown Immensely on this campus, encompassing a multitude of able men and engaging In a variety of activities. Our purpose is to create an environment of friendship and brotherhood aiding these able men into developing themselves more fully and meaningfully. Furthermore, we stress scholastic achievement and promote everlasting bonds among brothers and the community. The activities of Alpha Sigma Phi range from leadership workshops and social formats to services to the community at large such as helping with the organization of the Homecoming parade and other University related activities. We also take pride in contributing to charitable organizations as The American Heart Association and Children s Hospital through innovated activities as the annual spring Dance Marathon. We have also given a donation to the Black Action Sociaty. here at S.R.U. and co sponsored a church service with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Later this semester we will celebrate our fourth year here at Slippery Rock, and sponsor a can food drive for the Slippery Rock Community. In the 1929 Slippery Rock yearbook on page 8, Jim Kline, a photographer on this staff, found the following; “To the retiring member of our faculty, Dr. George L. Hamm, we are indebted for the name of our book. When a name was needed for our year book, Dr. Hamm, who at the time was the Latin teacher, was the one sought to suggest it. He advised the combination “Saxi” from the latin word Saxum, meaning rock and “Gena” from the verb gigno, meaning to spring. Unfortunately, I could not keep all the promises that I made. I tried to cover all sports, student activities and fraternities and sororities without bias or favoritism. To the regret of those troups with inadequate coverage my apologies. I could not come through with two pages for all greeks not because of no time or no photographers, but due to the apathy of certain groups or individuals in charge of their PR. As for clubs. I sent our numerous letters and ROCKET announcements about photo sessions, but still I had trouble gaining support from the student body. I feel that this book is an outstanding example of what only a handful of energetic and creative individuals can do with limited time, co-operation, and equipment. To my staff: Thank you for all your support and enthusiasm for photography and this book. To Dr. Pettys and Stan Shedaker my sincere thanks to you both for supporting me and for helping with the promotion of the Saxigena. Certain sport coverage was poor due to limited time and conflicting schedules of the photographers. I too apologize for this inadequacy. You will find though that this book is filled with page after page of student activities, special events, and numerous social events that happened during the 1983-1984 school year. Something new has also been added for the benefit of the Seniors — pages devoted to Senior Brags and several spreads on both Fall and Spring graduations. For those of you who bought this book, please enjoy it! The 1984 Saxigena, Slippery Rock's 63rd Yearbook, was published in an edition of 600 copies by the students of SRUP and printed by Herff Jones Yearbooks of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The paper is Eurogloss pages 1-48. 80 A Calsis pages 49-272. It is bound together in an 8 1 2 x 11 Smyth sewn, round back and hard cover with headbands. Type format is Deluxe Collegiate, with HJ 500 gloss paper, printed on 272 pages. Body copy is 10 point, captions are 8 point, subheads are 24 point, Souvenir Light Italic respectively. The senior portraits and groups were photographed by Davor and all photography was printed by Davor Photographers located in Bensalem, Pa. Special thanks to Cecelia Kasnick and Chris Powers for all of the last minute help. Without you two, this final deadline would not have been met. All those late hours of drawing lines, typing brags, and hunting for specific photographs paid off in the culmination of this journal of the years events.
