Campus never really looked this way before; Then I remember — I remember the other time I felt this way. It might have been yesterday, but I know it wasn't. It was four years ago. The high school senior's first college visit. I blink my eye. September: I was here, again. The first caf meal with mom and dad. It was a trip in self-consciousness, not really a big deal. All facts considered, a bad dinner. (Whatever it was, I acquired a taste for it.) Confused, bored. Lost, and lonely — “What do you want from life? My first letter from home, little sister said: “And the cat misses you too. I smiled all day. (I missed the cat) Lost keys, locked out, old friends. New friends, no friends, eating alone in the caf, learning to Decode washing machine lids, and All-Tempa-Cheer's directions. Retraining to stand, walk. talk. hear, and drink in Kiester parties. Maybe it's all a dream: tomorrow the alarm will announce. “Welcome to the second day of Orientation! No chance. An alcohol awareness seminar— I was too hung over to attend. “You don't look like a freshman. It sounds like such a compliment. I passed my first roommate by Old Main. He's doin' all right. Let's see: Wanting to be a poet, listening to my favorite Kansas Album every day for three weeks, then dropping and breaking it. Writing lines of poetry out by Lake Hi-Rise. The guys caught me once; After that whenever they wanted to get rid of me they'd say: “Hey Dave, why don't you go write a poem about it?' I still have them: I'll show you if you'd like. Caring, not caring, then caring again about grades. Jobs, resumes, grad schools. Bob's subs, and five guys Spending their last pennies on a case of Iron City. Falling, drunk, in the snow — hiking back to the hall. Doing dishes, arguments with roommates, and bringing The Valu King bill within 7 cents of my life’s savings. Lessons in love, and hangovers: these along could fill a novel. It would be hard reading, and more likely than not. boring. I'm still gripping my diploma, now more tightly Than five minutes before. My palm is sweating. I stand, here in the darkness, with one foot on the ground. I'm careful about where I'll place the other, And I hope it takes me forward. o vr mimn Booe . Here's a review of the 1982-83 Slippery Rock State College varsity sports season that produced national rankings, a television appearance. All-Americans. Pennsylvania Conference Western Division titles, new coaches, and excitement and enjoyment for the Rocket fans. It all started in autumn, as the fall teams said down the foundation of winning, that would be followed by its winter and spring counterparts. The fall sports provided the fans with their impressive standings, and a fresh start for the 1982-83 sports campaigns. Cinder the helm of first-year head coach Don Ault, the Rock Football team turned around a 2-7 record to a 7-3 mark, tying for second place in the Pennsylvania Western Division. A group of experienced veterans and talented newcomers lead the Rock in the 1982 campaign. The gridders opened the season with a 21-8 win over West Liberty in the first annual Butler County Football Classic. The Rock then suffered a setback to Towson State, before winning their next two. including their first conference win over IUP. 14-13 in a Homecoming Day victory. A last minute surge failed, as the Rockets dropped their first conference loss to Edinboro, 10-7. The Green and White made another television appearance, this time on a local ABC telecast, and upended Clarion in a 28-17 victory. The gridders then won their next three with decisions over Lock Haven (13-10), Shippensburg (24-14) and Miliersville (20-17). The gridders ended the season on a losing note, coming at the hands of California State. 14-12. Individually, the Rock faired well as a number of gridders received honors, including Coach Ault, who was named Pittsburgh Post-Gazette District small college Coach of the Year. Selected to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette District small college All-Star team were Jack Muller. Tony Emanuele, Rich Allen. John Dahlstrand and Jeff Williams, first team. Mike Fomiris was selected to the second team. Muller. Emanuele. Allen and Dahlstrand were also named to the ECAC Division II All-Star team and the Associated Press Little All-American team. Eleven Rockets were named to the PC Western Division All-League team. They were Muller. Emanuele. Dahlstrand. Williams. Allen. Fomeris. Wade Acker. Jim Watts, Shayne Stone, Barry McCracken and Don Christian. When things go right for the Slippery Rock soccer team, they go right. The hooters not only won the PC Western Division, but they beat rival Lock Haven, the first time in six years. The team finished their season with an 11-3-1 mark. Coach Jim Egli's men won their first three vames. giving up only one goal. The Rock dropped their first to Frostburg in the fourth game of the 1982 season. The Rockets then won eight while losing two and tying one. Charles Boateng was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association Area All-Star first team, while Ed Molina was chosen to the NSCA second team. Boateng and Molina were also chosen to the PC All-League team. Three Rocketmen chosen for the West Penn Intercollegiate Soccer Conference All-Star team were Boateng and Jim Vaglia. first, and Molina, honorable mention. Wake Forest transfer Bob Petrini placed second in the NCAA Division II national Cross Country championships to pace the men thinclads to a 6-1 record. Petrini also broke seven course records and captured the PSAC Individual State Championship. Coach Bill Lennox's harriers placed 11th overall in the NCAA Division II regional qualifiers. Invitational finishes for Slippery Rock were California State, first; West Virginia University, fifth: and IUP. sixth. With a 5-1 record, the women harriers finished third in the PC championship. The ladies bid to represent Slippery Rock in the NCAA Division II national championship fell short as they finished fifth among 26 teams. The lady thinclads placed second at the California State Invitational and West Virginia University Invitational, while finishing third in the IUP Invitational. It is said that the third time is a charm, but for the Slippery Rock State College women's tennis team, the third time did not happen. The lady netters failed to capture their third straight PC title, and ended up second. Despite losing four of the top seven players from 1981. the netters dropped four matches and won 10 to end another successful season. Like alot of teams this year, the lady spikers had a new head coach. Dennis Steibel replaced Kathy Brenner as the women s volleyball head coach. The Lady Rockets finished first in the La Salle Invitational and second in the Youngstown State Invitational. Although the Rockets placed only fourth in the Edinboro Invitational, they defeated arch-rival host team, Edinboro. Sue Smith and BeAnn Bedford were named to the Youngstown All-Tournament team, while Lisa Shirey was named to the Edinboro All-Star team. Bedford was also selected to the first women's volleyball academic All-American team by the College sports Information Directors of American. The women's field hockey team, coming off of a winless regular season, won their first game of the 1982 fall season. The Lady Rockets defeated Pitt in their first game of the season, and won their second against Kent State. Coach Pat Zimmerman's squad were without the services of goalie Anna Baldini. who was out for the year with a knee injury. Dora Dyson and Sheila Geissenhainer were selected to the College Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II All-America first team. The 1982-83 winter season brought not only its many snowfalls, but also national rankings. PC division titles and All-Americans to the various winter sports teams. The number three was unlucky for the men's basketball team, as they dropped a playoff game to Edinboro. losing a chance to advance to the Pennsylvania Conference tournament It was the third time the Rock faced the Fighting Scots during the season, after previously winning both regular season games. Coach Dave Rooney's cagers finished the season at 154 155 17-6 (7-3 conference). The Rockets tied Clarion for first place in the PC West, but its loss to Cal. State at the end of the season cost the Rock the PC West title, sending them into playoff action against Edinboro. The Green and White cagers won six out seven in the 1982 portion of the season, and were ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in January. The Rock impressed their conference foes in the 1983 half of the season with fine performances. After posting a 1-1 conference record, the hoopers won the next three league games, and moved into first place in the PC West. After dropping a game to Clarion, the cagers won another three straight before the Cal. State loss. Bill Rausch and Troy Mild were honored for their outstanding play during the course of the season. Mild was named PC Player of the Week twice. ECAC Player of the Week, and along with Rausch, was named to the All-Pennsytvania Conference Western Division team. Rausch was ECAC Player of the Week, third team 1982-83 Division II All-American, district small college Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and named to the Pittsburgh Press All-District team. Rausch. Mild and John Samsa were first team selections to the NABC All-District team. Samsa was also selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team. The lady hoopers had a record-breaking season under first-year head coach Kathy Walton, compiling an almost perfect 10-1 record in the Pennsylvania Conference Western Division. The Rockets also got national exposure as they appeared in the NCAA Division II rankings four times, including a 15th place rank in January. Other record breaking trends for the roundballers were most wins in a season (20), shooting percentage (462) and an unblemished home record (8-0). However, the Rockets were stopped, in the Pennsylvania State Conference Championships, by a powerful Cheyney State team, after defeating Millersville in the first round. In tourney play, the Lady Rockets captured the SRSC Invitational, and finisher second at the Davis Elkins Tournament and the Shippensburg Snowflake Classic. Forwards Jodi Kest and Mary Vaughn were named to the PC Western Division All-Conference team. The wrestling team was not far behind in national exposure either. The grapplers captured the 1983 Eastern Regional title, while gamering three individual titles: Anthony Calderaio. 156 157 158 n   Track Kfcne 159 Jerry Johnson and freshman John Heropoulos. Obtaining second place finishes were Don Henry and Keith DeGraaf. Calderaio also placed sixth in the Nationals receiving All-American status for the second straight year, and being the only wrestler of 15 PC representatives to qualify. All in all, the Rock matmen placed fourth in the Pennsylvania Conference Tournament; first in the Kent State tourney, and third at the Penn State tournament. Grappler head coach Fred Powell also received some well-deserved recognition by being inducted in to the Lock Haven State College Wrestling Hall of Fame. While most people were skating on frozen posds, a grout of swimsuit-clad women were pacing their way to an undefeated season, and a third place finish in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships. Alyson Chick. Corrie Convis, Valerie Domingues, Florence Gallet. Kristin Legere, Carolyn Pampino, Christel Smith, Karen Stasko, Lynne Sowinski and Peggy Lynn Workman lead the way of Rock mermaids at the NCAA Divisional II Swimming and Diving Championships. Canvis and Workman received All-American honors at the national meet. The Rocket mermen were not far behind their female counterparts, as they finished fourth in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships, sending 19 men to the state meet The Men's swim team compiled a 4-4 mark to end the regular season. Coach Bill Hotchkiss' team was then represented by Andy Martin, Scott Strong, Joe Mahar and David Hauck at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Coach Hotchkiss was also recognized by his peers, being named PC Coach of the Year. The women’s gymnastics team had an up and down season, but finished third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Championships. The Lady tumblers placed second in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals. Monica Reaves and Julie Morrow had some fine performances at the NCAA Division II Championships with Reaves finishing in eighth place to cap the 1982-83 campaign. The men gymnasts had a less than championship calibre season, but did well individually. Two Rockets highlighted the 1982-83 season with impressive showings. Andy Moseley and Jay Reidel represented Coach Steve Banjak's squad at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Rockets finished the season at 2-6, placing fourth in the Great Lakes League Championships. The men and women indoor track team ended their season with the Slippery Rock Open. The women had five first places, while the men captured three first place honors. In the West Virginia Invitational, the men set five records. The women lost to West Virginia in a dual meet Juanita Vetter and Lisa Ball qualified for the NCAA Divisional II Track and Field Championships to end their season. What was a rebuilding year for the judo team, turned out to be a rewarding year as the men and women placed second and third respectively in the 22nd National Collegiate Judo Association Championships. Gaining All-American honors were Sue Adametz, Lewis Rogers and Ruthann Kelly. The judo team also won the Benefit of Children Hospital tournament for the sixth straight year, while placing second in the Cumberland Tournament in both men's and women's divisions. Spring's a time for sun-filled days, but this past spring, many Rock athletic teams faced unseasonable coldness in their outings. Despite the weather, the spring squads continued the winning trend of their fall and winter counterparts. Foul weather cancelled the latter part of six games for the Slippery Rock baseball team. Despite the inclement weather, the diamondmen put together a 13-game winning streak in seven days, posting a 20-15 record. The Rock Batmen missed out on the PC Championships this year with a 10-6 mark, after capturing the PC West title last year. The Green and White baseballers compiled a 3-6 record down South, where the sun did not shine either. Carrying the big bats for Coach Wally Rose’s niners were Ralph Bowser. Sal Agostinelli. Gene Vallecorsa, John Samsa and Lane Baker. Pitching aces included Mike Staruch, Chuck Ferron and Scott Hunt The women’s softball team pounded out another successful season with a 14-1 showing and a second place seed in the PC Championship tournament. Jeannie Raudensky, Laura Youorski, Darlene Bullock and Lynn Poznanski clubbed opponents with their powerful bats as their teammates Deb Feather. Laura Morgan and Cheryl Stevenson stopped the Rock opposition with their mound appearances. With the way things were going, the Rocket women should have had an impressive showing in the state playoffs, and a shot at the NCAA Division II Regionals. Another successful women's team this spring was the women’s lacrosse team. The 160 Homccomng laxwomen were seeded fourth in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoffs, after defeating Shippensburg in an over time victory. The Rock women boasted a 12-3-1 overall record losing only to Lock Haven. Kutztown and Frostburg. The laxwomen compiled an undefeated 7-0-1 mark in the Sanford tournament during Spring Break with a 0.90 goals against average. Although the Slippery Rock men s tennis team suffered an 'unhospitable southern trip, the Rock bounced back up north as they posted an 11-9 mark. Coach Jim McFarland faced a rebuilding year after losing top players to graduation, but the netters did not disappoint their coach, as Harold Luecken, Chet Czyz and Henry Schelter lead the way of young talent. Maybe the only disappointment for the Rockets came at the end of the season, when the site of the Pennsylvania Conference Championships were switched to Bloomsburg. Slippery Rock was to be the host for the 1983 state championships. Slippery Rock will host the championships in the near future. Under the first-year coach Keith Driftmier, the Rocket men's track team had 15 first and second place finishes at the Indiana Invitational, while recording a 2-1 mark. Bob Petrini. Kevin Gianetti. Bob Brennan. Bill Brice and Gary Aldrich paced the way as they qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Not to be outshone, the women's track and field compiled a 3-1 record and captured 17 first place honors at the Indiana Invitational. National qualifiers for the women included Blanca D'Hoedt, Juanita Vetter. Lisa Ball. Lori Maurer. Jayne Beatty and Brenda Egli. After placing 10th at the ECAC finals this past fall, the Slippery Rock golfers had an impressive spring showing. The Rock putters tied for ninth at camp Lejeune. and placed third in the Wooster tournament Jo Jo Bodnar 161 Women Track lenno Men' Track L«wk 162 163 Women  Tennn 164 KMrte 165 Campus Candids ... 166 Track Mr 167 Women s VoOe H H Q ocg Women • Vo«ev -fl Student FTuheny 170 Student Ceotfl Student 171 172 173 174 Student Unknown Student 175 Student Young 176 179 Campui SN p 180 18! 182 183 Campus Boutt 184 Student Unknown 185 107 StudeMi PcnaM 188 189 Sludent K ne 190 Student Khne 191 192 Studtnu 193 Student 194 Cling 195 196 ÂŁ61 6  o l«U u d W«m s 198 199 200 201 Student Kfcrve 202 203 Ssudent Kline 205 Monopoly Unknown Reprtmg Angelin 206 207 Sluders Proof Sluder Young 208 Curp M n  B tk? x n 210 Young 211 Judo 212 Ot g 213 214 Ocorg 215 t Stmieri!
