I was one such case. About midway through the fall semester. I came down with a case of. what one authority on the subject called, the sophomore blues. According to this person, it was normal, and almost expected. Another suggested taking a year off. For myself, I really didn't know. It sort of felt like I was forever barred from the career world by the classroom fence. I wanted nothing more at that time than out of school. I felt boxed, alone, confused. Thus. I sought out an answer to this problem. It was then that I had a talk with my old man. He was never a learned man as far as books were concerned. In fact, he never made it past the seventh grade, educationally. But the old man. he had a different type of education, the one you don't get from books, the one a man learns on his own. out there, where the classroom does not reach. I stood with him on this particular winterâs evening, leaning on one elbow, and looking out through his frosted bedroom window into the nightâs fresh snow. It was then that I told him straight out; I didn't like school anymore. I wanted to try something different, to quit for awhile, I said. When he turned to look at me through the time torn lines amidst his rough and worn face, I knew that it would cut right through him to see me follow his mistake-torn youth. You just have to finish school 'cause if ya don't then you'll end up a bum like me â he said. foungnom, OH Btaochi 46 There wasn't anything overly significant about that statement, but coming from him. who I knew myself was less than successful, it entered into my mind, and in the process, took a piece of my heart I knew he was right. Turns out those few words from an aging, tired, forgotten man kept one energetic, impulsive, ordinary young man from repeating his admitted shortcoming. I've often thought myself a bum. though. Sort of like the old man. I guess, but I know now that I've got a lot more going for me than he did. After all. I had him behind me. and even though he wasn't much of a success by popular measure, he was my old man. and he knew in his heart what was best for me. He knew, and then later I was to realize what this was â to stay and finish school. Funny thing about the whole deal was before the school year ended, it was the old man who had given up. He died. As I stood there looking at his empty room, reviewing his empty life. I knew I would be a better man for him just being there for me when I needed. Thus. I continued plugging in school, and I made it through. I have him to thank for that, although I never did. Now as I look about myself. I'm different I can't think of myself as a bum anymore. No. as school takes me to that level of thinking above that of the old man, I realize how quickly Iâm forgetting him â the bum who put me here in the first place. It was he who eventually put me here, and he who kept me here in the end. I can only say thanks, but it's too late. He's not here to listen. Thus, this all comes down to a small insignificant tribute to that bum. my old man. and the thousands of others just like him. who being taken for granted, are thankful, in their aged wisdom, that in the end their kids will be just a little better than they. Its members are women and men who recognize that the contributions of women are vast and only now becoming known. We believe that Women's Studies is the other half of our human truth, our spiritual heritage. We further believe that the college exists solely for the pursuit of the whole truth. REPEAT CHORUS TWICE 4th state: âunknown syndromesâ the sounds of friction filter down from above: laughing liars lip-sync luna seas about love. notes from nowhere intrude, persist like holes in time, moments we've missed. this obsession grows stranger stranger â we are the agents of our own danger. unknown syndromes are more than hallucination: unknown syndromes move us 2 wider perception. after a 1000 attempts 2 erase our pain, questions w out answers still drive us insane, after challenging every claim w in range, questions w out answers are all that remain. looking 4 depth, i'm back on the road, the mass of this quest heaves a heavy load. cars blur in streaks the closer she comes: noticing my needs, she stops 4 my thumb. sensing what's in store since it's nearing 12. i open the door enter her realm . . . 5th state: âdeath hovers' trees w black bark veins of fire form an erect silhouette. the orange October moon fills w menace: the graveyard delivers the privacy it promised 2 lend us. as night creatures chorus their invitation, gravel crackles under the gravity of the situation. death hovers above the groin, blood pumping like the flip of a coin. she swerves between tombstones, crushing dead flowers; she slams the brake prepares 4 seduction in the witching hour; she unbuckles my belt, she unzips my leather. she gazes on my jewels, leaving little doubt as 2 whether. .. death hovers above the groin, her mouth my member join. faster faster as climax grows nearer. ghosts of former lovers haunt the rearview mirror! around the world w satyr-9 skin, anticipating peristalsis, she vaults up on me i slide in; 13 black roses 4 my bouncing bride. throbbing deep in her demise, cadaverous comets collide. death hovers above the groin, consummated in tender loins. 6th state: âx-rated x-tasyâ 7th state: âbrain spinal column come near me. woman, whisper your secret desires â i want 2 fulfill you w my raging fires... my fingers grow clever, my brain screams re-birth: the strength of this feeling shakes the virus of words. All over the campus at various times can be seen an extraordinary variety of successful movies. This last year alone we have been regaled with a complete range of filmic pleasure, stretching from the stark horror of Bergman s Seventh Seal to the zany anties of Larry, Curly, and Moe. No avenue of approach, no area of interest was left untreated. IF documentaries were your bag. you could have seen that masterpiece of Nazi propaganda, 'Triumph of the Will. For sheer nonsense, on the other hand, nothing could have topped Woody Allen's Everything you wanted to know about sex etc. ... On the more serious side you could find many flicks with much socially redeeming value. For the gay nineties set we had 0ephant Man, which surely made some kind of statement about something; or for the more modem visceral types. Dustin Hoffman in âStraw Dogs. If your interests were musical, then the fanciful gyrations of 'Tales of Hoffmann would surely have pleased. And for the less lily livered music folk we have Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. What mess of film would be complete without one from la belle France? This year we were more than fortunate in La Cage aux Folles (a cage of mad women), a flaming faggot farce in which the son of the owner of the transvestite night club falls in love with the daughter of the head of the moral majority, a kind of fruity Guess Who's Coming to Dinner without Sidney Portier. Also the film version of John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman, although not as dramatic as 'The Magus surely was pleasant and beautiful enough. We all know that no year would be complete without a horror film. The Christopher Lee Mummy by Hammer Productions Ltd. certainly qualified in this area; and for aspirants to political sophistication, we had that somewhat bewildering Peter Sellers movie, Being There, with its halfwit hero. Clint Eastwood fans would have adored Yojimbo, a kind of Nipponese Dirty Harry; and from Germany came the adaptation of Gunter Grass' The Tin Drum, a truly masterful film with something for the historian as well as the poet No year would be complete without a Fellini flick; and we were most fortunate this year to have Juliet of the Spirits, a glorious film unparalled in its ability to delight Yes folks, it was indeed not a bad year at the Rock at all. Sisk 165 ATHLETES by Tim McCoy The following collection of notes on Sports at Slippery Rock has been written by Tim McCoy, a Communications major, at the request of the Saxigena. The fall sports season brought excitement to the Rock in more ways than just the routine manners of the fall athletic schedule. It brought a new coach, a national television appearance, a winning record after all the records were compiled and a bid for a national title. The excitement started in early summer with the appointment of Fred Goldsmith as head coach of the Rocket football team. Goldsmith took over the post vacated by Bob DiSpirito. The gridders provided quite a bit of excitement despite a 2-7 record. Six of the Rock's losses were by a total of 23 points. In most of the losses, the Green and White led until the final minutes of the games. In the season premier at the University of Michigan against Wayne State, the Rockets were stopped just inches from a win with less than one minute remaining in play. All-American Rick Porter carried the ball around the right side in an attempt to convert a two point conversion, but found the Wayne State gridders too much to overcome. After dropping a pair. Millersville, 20-12. and California State. 16-0. the Rock had a 17-7 lead slip away as the Dayton Flyers came from behind to win 21-17. The Green and White gave up two touchdowns in the final period to send the homecoming crowd away disappointed. Following their fifth consecutive loss, 10-17 at Indiana, the Rock found a combination to give them the opportunity to humiliate Edinboro 39-12 on national television. The winning combination of plays avoided the Rock the following Saturday when Clarion knocked off the Rock 12-10; again the Rockets failed to utilize a lead they gained by halftime. 49-14 was the final score as the Rockets closed the season at home. The win was the final for the Green and White during the 1981 campaign. The Rockets closed their season of almost with a 26-21 loss at Shippenburg. The playoff bound Raiders needed a last minute touchdown to pull out the win. There were several fine individual efforts put forth on the Rock grid-iron. Rick Porter earned third team Little All-American and Scott Weist received an Honorable Mention to the same team. Both players were named to the All-ECAC team and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All District team. Eight Rockets gained berths on the All-Conference squad. They were Rick Porter. Jack Muller, Dennis Carson. Steve Rood. Fred Brandt, John Dahlstrand. Gary Hunt and Jeff Kyger. Jim Egli's Rock booters had another fine year, but the old nemesis. Lock Haven, kept them out of the Pennsylvania Conference playoffs. The Green and White kickers dribbled, headed, and passed their way past 12 opponents. They opened with three straight wins, then dropped a 5-0 decision to Pitt. Following the Pitt loss the Rockets rebounded for nine wins and two ties setting the stage for the final showdown with the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven. The Eagles prevailed 4-1 to earn the post season berth. Two Rockets claimed All-American status. Tony Hindley and Charles Boateng. Eric Halter was selected for the Western PA Intercollegiate Soccer Conference All-Star team. The Rockets chosen for the All-Conference team were Boateng. Hindley and Harold Stimmel. Despite returning only four letter winners from 1980. SRSC's Women's tennis team captured the PC title. With a great deal of optimism, the lady netters only dropped two matches, Duquesne and Shippensburg. while posting a 9-2 record and capturing the title. The most impressive team on campus during the fall athletic schedule may have been the women harriers. Along with the conference championship, they collected the trophy as champions at the EA1AW Division III Championships. Their bid for a national title fell short at Idaho State, but Bill Lennox's runners did not leave unknown. They placed fourth overall. While accumulating the 5-0 record they posted, the women harriers captured titles at the West Virginia Invitational and the California State Invitational while gathering a number two finish in the IUP Invitational. Bill Lennox's other running squad was not as obvious, posting a 4-3 record. The men harriers copped an eighth place finish overall in the conference. Like the gridders the women's field hockey team found some difficulty in pulling the close games out of the bag. Dr. Zimmerman's team posted a 1 -9-2 record with the lone win coming in the University of Pittsburgh Invitational. Despite the poor showing in the standings. Slippery Rock was chosen as host of the Pennsylvania Conference Championships, but the Rock did not compete in the three day event. The most underrated team of the fall teams was the women's volleyball team. The Lady Rockets finished their season with a 25-10-1 record. But despite all the wins, the Green and White weren't expected to finish as well as they did. They captured titles at the Youngstown State Invitational and the LaSalle Invitational. They placed second in their own tournament and earned a spot in the conference tourney. Seeded fourth entering the PC tournament, the Green and White surpassed everyone's expectations again by finishing third. The Fall season gave Rock fans a lot to cheer about. Kest J- Battles Like the fall teams, the Green and White squads from the snowbound sports created a little excitement around the grand old halls of SR. Several teams participated in post season action as the winter teams combined for a 69-43 record. The men s basketball team, probably the most improved team, posted a 16-10 record after collecting only eight wins during the preceeding two campaigns. Dave Rooney's cagers opened the year with a 5-1 record, including wins over West Virginia Weslyan. Westminster. Walsh, and Carnegie Mellon University. However, the fall portion closed dismally with a double overtime loss to Philadelphia Textile and a drubbing from national power Central State. Following Christmas break, the Rockets resumed claiming the area by defeating Grove City College in the spring semester opener. The Green and White never lost more than two consecutive games during the remainder of the season. The third place finish in the western division of the Pennsylvania Conference gave the Rock a shot at the conference title. The Rockets defeated IUP at Indiana to advance to the final four and take a shot at another nationally ranked team in the Cheyney Wolves. Cheyney ended the Rockets surprising season, but the semi-final game saw quite a bit of action from the many freshmen listed on the Rockets' roster. During the course of the year the Rocket players and coaches were cited for their accomplishments. Head coach Dave Rooney was named coach of the year in the tri-state district. Junior guard Bill Rausch averaged 17.4 points per game and received recognition as PC player of the week. PC All-Tourney team and second team AJI-East Division II by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Troy Mild. Sophomore co-captain, was named to the PC Western Division team for his efforts through the course of the 1981-82 season. Mild tallied an average of 17 points per game and lead the team rebounding by averaging 8 caroms per game. Stapleton The SRSC Lady Rockets matched the output of the men by posting a matching 16-10 ledger. Throughout the year the women hoopers outmatched their opponents including victories in the Edinboro State Tourney where they claimed the number one spot. The 16 wins ties a school record for most wins by the women cagers. The Green and White clad ladies failed to set the record for wins by dropping the PC Championship game to Cheyney 92-33 and losing in the opening round of the A1AW Regional 1 -B Division II to the tournament host Rider 71 -57. The Judy Battles coached bucketeers were lead by a number of players. Sophomore Jodi Kest lead the team in scoring, while juniors Jackie Collins and Beth Fedorowich both remained close in the scoring race. Kathy Lisman quarterbacked the club with eight assists per game. Like the men. the lady cagers have a number of people returning and could present quite an opposition for their opponents. The wrestling team couldn't let the two basketball teams claim all the spotlight during the months of snow, sleet and gloom, so they hosted the NCAA Eastern Regional and sent four Rockets to Nationals while finishing second in the region. As they wrestled their way toward pinning the bid for hosting the regional, the grapplers scored a 7-6 record in dual meets and competed in many invitationals. Through the course of tournaments and invitationals the Green and White placed sixth at Lehigh and seventh at Lock Haven. The Pennsylvania Conference Tournament found the Rockets end their conference efforts fourth overall. While finishing fourth in the Eastern Regional Anthony Calderaio. Jerry Johnson. Cheryl Levick's women s gymnastics team was yet another team that achieved great things during their â81 -82 season. Posting a 13-1 record while enroute to a Pennsylvania Conference title. EAIAW Title, and beating the likes of Pitt. Clarion. West Virginia. Eastern Michigan and Kent State. The lone loss came in the A1AW National Championship at Denver. Hard work enabled the tumblers to retain their EAIAW title and regain their PC title, the second in three years. The individuals performances of Carol Gray. Monica Reeves, and Julie Morrow highlighted the Rock's efforts during the successful season. Like many of the other winter sports, there are many of the Green and White tumblers returning for next year's campaign. While on the topic of gymnastics, the men's gymnastics team gave a fine showing during their most recent campaign. In dual meets the male tumblers finished seven and six. Steve Banjak's team placed fourth at the GL1C Championship, but the highlight of one of the most successful seasons for men's gymnastics was receiving a bid to the 15th NCAA Division II Championship. The Rockets were lead by the skills of seniors Jim Watson. Mike Heasley. and Jeff Brandau plus transfer Jeff Collins. The year was highlighted with two new team scoring records. After setting the team record of 241.40 at Kent State, the Rockets improved their home mark with an effort of 240.60 in Morrow Field House. With the departure of the seniors there may be some holes in next year's squad, but coming off a successful year could aid the filling of those holes. As the snow flakes were falling outside, swimmers were on the inside playfully enjoying life in the water. The women enjoyed a season that ended with six women gaining All-American status. Dick's Chicks finished fourth in the PC following a five win and two loss campaign. At the AIAW Division III National Championships in nearby Meadville Kristin Legere. Alyson Chick. Linda Honda. Christel Smith, Sally Paul and Janet Hoehn collected a number of All-American certificates while the team finished 14th overall. Life for Bill Hotchkiss was filled with trying to turn a group of talented young swimmers into a team that could challenge PC powers Clarion and Shippenburg. The mermen finished just below .500 with a mark of 4-6 against a realigned schedule to fit the competition level. The men wave-makers finished sixth in PC meet dropping from the previous year's fifth place finish. Under the guidance of Bill Lennox the men and women thinclads began their seasons in January with schedules that called for more individual competition than team meets. The men's team lost a host of sprinters and one of the countries finest Division II high jumpers decided to sit out giving Lennox headaches. The losses weren't as devastating as thought; the Rockets did salvage a one and two record along with the number of invitational appearances. The Women runners saw their season consist of competing in various invitationals and preparing for the outdoor season. In only its second year of existance. the women runners hosted a number of talented individuals. The list of talent included several members from the PC champion cross country team. Mary Hamilton, defending PC 400 meter champion. PC high jump champ Nancy Connor and Jane Beatty. PC shot put and discus champion. 175 SPRING SPORTS Not to be outdone by the fall and winter sport squads, the spring teams gave an effort that placed four teams in tournament action. All four teams, baseball, softball, and men's and women s track, are still involved in competition as I write this article. The baseball team came out during the semester as expected and played their opponents off the diamond. Wally Rose s batmen have only eight games to this point, while winning 29 and tying one. After capturing the western division title with a nine and one record, the Rock defeated Millersville for the conference title by sweeping a doubleheader from the Marauders 12-9 and 12-7. By claiming the PC title the Rockets earned the right to go to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. The Green and White baseballers dropped their opening game in the Regional 4-3 in ten innings to Valdosta. The Rockets were paced by a host of talented players during the course of the year. The hitting of Gary Gill. Ralph Bowser, John Samsa and Sal Agostinelli lead the offensive attack. The defense and pitching helped stymie the opposition. The women s softball team earned the right to participate in the AIAW national tournament for the third consecutive year. Despite showing only 14-12 in the record books and a third place finish in the EA1AW Regional. Jan Kasnevich's club received the bid because of past performance in the last two tournaments in which they played. Jeanne Raudensky and Debbie Abate lead the batting attack while the pitching of Deb Feather. Laura Morgan and Ann Kusko gave the offense a chance to be effective. The Lady Rockets entered the national tournament with hopes of improving the previous fifth place finishes in the AIAW National event Bill Lennox's men's and women's track teams are both currently involved in preparing for the NCAA National track and field meet. The women posted a 1 -1 record in dual meets plus they captured the Towson State Invitational. The highlight of the season to this point was winning the PC title. The lady thin clads gathered the title while hosting the event The men tracksters season was also 1-1 as a team, but wasn't as fruitful as far as capturing any titles of invitationals. The men hosted the PC finals, but could only muster a sixth place finish. However, the Green and White runners did qualify for the national meet. Before dropping the final two games of their season the laxwomen looked like a team that couldn't be beaten. After losing the opener, the Rockets knocked off Kutztown. Bucknell. Frostburg and Bloomsburg in a row while outscoring their opposition 35-19. But. then came the season ending losses and a shot at the title disappeared. The efforts by the members of the Green and White were justly rewarded when seven of the team members were chosen to play in the (J.S. Women's Lacrosse Association national competition. Those chosen were Lori Yost. Sandy Harner, Kristin Sourbeer, Colleen Gilligan, Anne Carr. Tammy Kolb and Hope Schrevelius. The men netters posted a 12-8 ledger including a string of seven in a row. The string included victories over Penn State-Behrend, Westminster. Duquesne, Gannon and Lock Haven. The men slipped to sixth in the conference from third after the state match. Chet Czez, Steve Seltzer and Harold Lueken headed the list of performers for the Green and White. Al Schmittlien's golfers were lead by Rick Bisi as they captured high rankings at Elmira (first place), Allegheny (second), and West Liberty (third). Iâve noticed that over the years we've changed this question around to, What's your major? and dropped the inference to growing up in the hopeful assumption that we have. I hope you don't feel that this is it, that your education is over, or that you're all grown up. Sure you can stop now. but why? In all that you've learned here at Slippery Rock, the multitude of pages read, problems solved, and the words you've written, your accumulated education should include all that you've learned, and an awareness of all you don't know. 242 Don't let graduation stand in the way of your education. Pursue knowledge with great vigor, and value what you know. We will be the ones who change the wrongs, and value our rights. Lofty hopes, unreachable goals, you say? Mo, just a wish, a hope deep inside that no part of what we've gained here will go to waste, and that our pride in having attended this institution will run deeper and a little wider than our individual majors.
