Injuries played havoc with the harriers as the Rock's four best distance runners — senior Tom Graham and juniors Pete Lucas. Tom Haines and Rick Davanzati — each missed at least three of the seven meets this season because of various ailments and. the squad was never able to establish a measure of consistency. Coach Bill Lennox, because of the multitude of injuries, was not able to put his harriers through regular workouts until late in the year, and consequently, the Rock runners never reached their peak. During the regular season, the Rocket cross-country team put together a 5-2 record, while in post-season competition, the harriers finished fourth in the Pennsylvania Conference Championships, and came in 19th in the NCAA Division III Meet. Getting off to a somewhat slow start, blanking PSU-Behrend (3-0) and St. Vincent (5-0), before dropping back-to-back heart-stoppers to Grove City (in overtime) and Pitt, both by 2-1 counts, the Rock turned it on from that point. Led by All-America and all-time scoring leader Art Rex and fellow co-captains All-America Kamal Hourari and goalie Paul Richards, the Rock footmen reeled a school record of 11 consecutive wins, including a 2-0 shut-out of tough Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va). The lengthy victory string put the Rock into the District 18 title game where it claimed a win over Indiana. However, the booters were not quite able to put the finishing touches on the season. The club suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Pennsylvania Conference Eastern Division champion East Stroudsburg in the PC title game. Three days later, the Rock saw its season hopes for national competition come to a halt as it was blanked by Davis and Elkins College (W.Va.), 4-0. in the District 30 title contest. For the season. Rex tallied 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. Dr. Knierim's squad faced an unpredictable season. The Rockets, led by varsity returners Rebbie Benoit and captain Cindi Nadelman. fought their way through the toughest schedule a SR women s tennis team has ever played, including Lock Haven. Marshall University. West Virginia U.. U. of Pittsburgh and Allegheny College. But despite playing the tough schedule and constantly facing more experienced teams, the women compiled on amazing 5-6 record. And since only two members of this year's enthusiastic squad will be lost through graduation, the potential of the team is yet to be tapped. Outstanding play came from freshmen singles players Kim Davenport (6-4). Patricia McCall (6-5), Lois Snelson (6-4) and Sheryl Young (4-6). Experience was the key to this success as 11 varsity veterans from last season's 9-3 squad returned for another year. On their way to compiling an 8-1-1 record, the women opened up by defeating Indiana. 4-1. then suffered a 0-2 loss to Lock Haven State. After this loss, the women never faltered again as they reeled off seven consecutive victories (and one tie) over the U. of Pittsburgh. Brockport U., Frostburg State. Ohio U., Penn State (1-1), Indiana. Lock Haven and Kent State. The victory over Lock Haven was a highlight of the season as it avenged the only loss of the regular season and was a first-time varsity victory over arch rival Lock Haven. The season concluded with the acceptance of a post-season bid to the EAIAW Regional Field Hockey Tournament at Glassboro State (N.J.). The team won two and lost one before being eliminated by Penn State. 3-1. This brought their over-all season record to an impressive 10-3-1. The volleyball team continued its winning ways this year, despite the fact that Dr. Wheaton led her team through its toughest schedule ever. During the regular season, the women defeated such powerful teams as Clarion State. Penn State. Grove City. Indiana (Pa.) U. and Ohio University. The Rockets concluded their season by playing in the EAIAW Regional Tournament at Edinboro State. Coach Doug Zimmerman expressed some disappointment over not making the play-offs,' but added that we did have some degree of success. The disappointment for Coach Zimmerman and his Rockets came in the form of a 3-7 start. The measure of success was achieved as the Rock won eight of its 15 contests after the first of the year, finishing with a 5-5 Pennsylvania Conference Western Division slate. After the Rockets defeated Geneva. 79-65. the team began to turn the season around and reeled-off six consecutive wins over California State. Indiana (Pa.) Univ.. Lock Haven State. Clarion State. Lingering memories of one s sharing Life with classmates through the years Graduation is conclusion Of one big phase of work and fun. A milestone passed, new things begun. Graduation is excitement, Speeches, farewells And applause, diplomas And a mortar board .. . The gate to pathways unexplained.
