Ten all-time grid records bit the dust as the Big Green Machine rolled to an 8-2 season. Tailback Ed O'Reilly and kicker Ed Kelly, a pair of Irish underclassmen, led the assault on the school records. SR closed out play at old N. Kerr Thompson Field with a 76-0 win over Lock Haven, stretching its streak of not having lost at home to 13 games. In games played in Pennsylvania, the Rock has not lost in its last 23 starts. Unfortunately, however, the '73 team failed to receive further opportunity to prove their merits when they were bypassed by the NCAA in its selection for the College Division II Playoffs. In the locker room, players listen intently to co-captain Terry Factor prior to taking the field. Tension begins to mount before the game as coaches Kcndziorski. DiSpirito, and Oberlin ponder the game plan. If -''MZTT A shout of unity and eager anticipation of another Rocket victory resounds in the huddle before kick off. Co-captains Curt Krai and Stan Stanchcck lead the Rockets in warmup exercises. 56 And then it's kick off time as the Rockets race downfield behind kicker Ed Kelly (6). Flanking Kelly are Dave Tierney (74), |im Gallagher (23). and Kenny Minnear (84). 57 Not much time or space is needed for Ed O'Reilly (44) to break through for a long gainer with Ed Seiwell (52). Denny Tilko (77). |crry Skocik (90). Bruce Boliver (8). and Don Lewis (32) providing the escort against California. Factor, Krai, O’Reilly, and Stancheck, Receive All- American Honors Co-captuins Terry Factor (63) and George Mihalik (12) break through to introduce another state championship season for the Rockets. Don Lewis (32). who led the Rock in punt returns this season, heads tor a game-clinching touchdown against Indiana, escorted bv Denny Yctsko (34) Mike Malone (45). and Jim Mesoros (40). 58 Bubba Hood displays perfect form as he booms another punt. Quarterback George Mihalik pivots to his left to begin the familiar Houston veer option. Georgu Mihalik launches a pass to open the '74 season from the West Coast where Slippery Rock affirmed its existence to Washington fans, but dropped a close, hard fought contest in the rain to the University of Puget Sound. 13-7. Don Lewis (32) leads the interference for Gary Runco (42) as the Rockets register another long punt return. THE ROAD LEADS TO WEST CHESTER 60 Don Lewis stretches for a successful pass reception against Lock Haven, which the Rockets buried 76-0 in the final game at Morrow Field. I I n ! il. EAST IS EAST, AND WEST IS WEST, AND ONCE AGAIN THE WEST IS BEST Defense turns offense ns Mr. All-Everything. Terry Factor picks off a West Chester pass and scampers for a long return. President Watrel. with trophy in hand, joins the champions in a postgame huddle marking the second consecutive PA crown for the Rock. 61 FIELD HOCKEY 1973 The Slippery Rock Field Hockey team captained by Becky Lamey. completed the 1973 schedule with the winningest season ever. Coached by Dr. Zimmerman, and assisted by Miss Bonanno and Barb Satina, the girls compiled a season record of 4-2-1. A much improved forward line blasted the opponents goal 28 times in their 7 game season. The scoring attack was led by Sally Elliott. Audrey Davison, and Deb Pluck and was backed by a defense that allowed an average of only 1.5 goals per game. At the conclusion of the season the first team participated in Pittsburgh trials where Sally Elliott. Kathie Gorman. Marie Lud-wick. Diane Ogden, and Kris Rettstadt were selected to Pittsburgh I. and Katie Shenk. Audrey Davison and Joce Muntz were selected to Pittsburgh II. which enabled them to attend the Mid-East tournament in Gettysburg. Marie Ludwick was selected to the Mid-East II team and participated in the National tournament in Boston. Losing only two seniors, Sally Elliott and Kathie Gorman through graduation. Field Hockey at the Rock looks ahead to a strong returning team, as the second team comprised mostly of freshmen, compiled the outstanding record of 7-0-1! Dam kids! 62 Slippery Rock on defense at the Mid-East Tournament in Gettysburg. 63 In his 18th season as head coach of the Slippery Rock soccer team, Jim Egli directed his hooters to the school's winningest season ever, finishing with an 11-4-1 record. During regular season, the team tied the school for the longest undefeated streak, going nine games without a loss. Six straight wins near the end of the season allowed SR to finish 11-2-1 in the regular season. The Big Green then dropped a tough 3-2 decision to East Stroudsburg in the Pennsylvania Conference championship game, and was bested by Edinboro in sudden death overtime, 2-1, in the NAIA District 18 title game. Halfback Gary Sphar and inside Kamal Houari made the honorable mention District All-American listings. Below Bernie Bonnie (Jethro) waits for Don Shea (4) is closely pursued by an opponent some action. Coach Egli gives some timely advico to freshman lineman Kamal Houari. SOCCERMEN PLAY IN POST-SEASON GAMES 65 A half-time break in the action. 66 : 67 Steve Allison (17) shoots a direct kick with Mike Dichov (25) standing by. 68 Gary Sphar moves the ball with Bear Maddock available for a pass. 69 Bear Maddock and Rich Posipanko fight for a ball against Gannon. Don Shea moves against Gannon. The ready position requires concentration, even in practice. 70 . . and the serve starts the game. A I The 1973 Volleyball team, coached by Dr. Marie Wheaton, turned in the finest season in the history of the Rock. Captained by Pat Dalton, the first team compiled a season record of 13-3. while the second team, captained by Bonnie Frazier ran up a 11-2 season. The team attributes their success to team cohesiveness and their ability to put it all together when the pressure is on. Since volleyball has no set offense or defense, everyone must do their share and help one another play a completely team game. Highlights of the season include winning the California tournament for the second straight year, and the second team’s win over Edinbo-ro's first team. The team competed in the regional tournament for the first time ever, advancing to the quarter finals before losing to Towson. Seniors on the squad are Suz Duchene. Pat Dalton. Pat Johnston, and Sharon Balchus. With the depth and experience of this year's team, the future looks bright as the team is sure to be invited to regionals again next year. Time out for some coaching hints. 71 The 1973 Women's Tennis team had another superb season. upholding Coach Haverstick's fine career record of 55-4-2 for the years 1963-1973. Assisting this year with the second team is Dr. Helen Knierim. The team attributes their success to playing as a whole team, with everyone else, and helping each other out. Playing singles are Pam Truxal. Kathy Martin, and Cathy Solliday. Doubles are led by Jan Forsty-Donna Costa. Pam Schmucker-Mary Schwanke. and Joan Wolf-Barb Bockes. Seniors on the team are Pam Truxal. Kathy Martin, and Joan Wolf. Singles . . . when you're out there all by yourself... no coach . . . just a bunch of excited teammates rooting for you to win. Doubles is a game of oneness where each person is able to sense what the other is doing and what her capabilities are, but at the same time she is able to play her own game, knowing what she's going to do. lit m ONENESS Take two people Plus different talents ... on the court. . . They react to each other. Understand each other. Know each other’s play, And they play together as one unit. — Jan Forsty 72 Coach Haverstick sharing her knowledge of the game through example. If you'll adjust that knob just a little more Some encouraging words from the coach always helps. Now if she would have hit that cross court instead. . . 73 What a way to slice! Oops... I missed that one! 74 Over? What a backhand!! While the 1973 cross country season at the Rock didn’t produce a championship team, the runners of Coach Bill Lennox came through with a fine 8-2 regular season record to continue the winning tradition in the grueling distance running sport at SR. In the last five years, the cross country teams have combined for an impressive overall record of 41-9. The only senior on the ’73 team was Glenn Yeakel. leaving Coach Lennox with the bulk of his team coming back, including Jeff Carr. Eric Bruker. Ed McClimons. and Clint Winkler. Coach Lennox is also looking for a few freshmen to fit into the scheme of things for an even better season in '74. Jeff Carr drives to a victory. Dave McBride and Jeff Carr surge ahead to finish first and second. Although everyone won in the enthusiasm category. there were special winners during Greek Week. Tau Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Pi won the men's Tug-o'-war, while the Alpha Omicron Pis and Alpha Sigma Taus came in first for the women. Tau Kappa Epsilon joined Alpha Xi Delta to win the three-legged race. Kappa Delta took a first in the football toss, and Sigma Pi won it in the egg toss. Theta Xis won the eating contest, with a close second taken by Tau Kappa Epsilon. Alpha Sigma Phi came in first on their chariot, while the winning chariot in the ‘'looks'' department went to the Delta Zetas. Sigma Pi and Delta Zeta got together to win the jitter-bugging contest, and as well as dancing, the Delta Zetas proved they could sing by taking a first in the Greek Sing. Sigma Pi took another laurel in the Greek Skits. Vice-Presidents Storch (L) and Thompson (R) lead the academic, procession followed by SRSC Board of Trustees Chairman Donald Oesterling and other trustees. The honored follow in the procession . . . Mom and Dad review the troops. t ) Governor Shapp and Graduate Dean Lowry share the exhilaration of the moment. SRSC graduate Alvin Byrd (far right) and SRSC student Jim Jones join the other SRSC trustees in the stadium. The faculty looks over the class for the last time. The Governor delivers his address. Gov. Shapp urged the graduates to provide the leadership so lacking today in government.” Not much will be done either on the public or private level without national leadership which uplifts our spirits, defines the goals and inspires us to make this a better country and a better world.” he said. After the address. Slippery Rock President Dr. Albert Watrel presented the governor with a plaque in recognition of your many contributions to higher education. and congratulated the graduates, urging them to give your best to the world, so it can give its best to you. 238 Acknowledgement of the conferral of degrees is made. The recessional begins. . . President Watrel extends congratulations while Governor Shapp displays his approval in the background. And a new beginning is at hand, Traditionally, this is the spot where the editor thanks the staff for all their time and effort in putting together the book. Since this is not a traditional Saxigena, this will not be the case. (I hope that if you made it this far, you’ll have taken note of the soft cover and the coverage or lack of coverage, of another year’s events at the Rock.) In keeping with the shrinking dollar and the fading popularity of the President, the Saxigena budget shrank and the staff faded. The non-staffers” I would like to thank include Dr. Don Di Spirito and Mr. John Carpenter who have given much of their time and talent in finishing this book; Mr. Red Moore and the Taylor Publishing Company who have patiently waited, and waited, and waited for the final pages to be sent in; Nancy Peck and Jenny Wegley whose flying fingers typed a large portion of the book; Jan Pohland who put downlier camera long enough to help draw layouts and crop pictures; Liz Boschini for her expertise at writing copy; the Athletic Director's office and the various coaches for their invaluable help in identifying pictures and writing captions; and my special thanks to Laurey Sobona without whose help I couldn't have finished the book.
