Furtkevic, McClaren II was a record breaking season for the Rockets as they captured the Western Division Championship, the State Crown, and a berth in the third annual Knute Rockne Bowl. Their 8-2-1 mark was the best in coach Bob DiSpirtio's six years at the helm of the Green and White. It was also a season of outstanding individual performances. Co-captain Mike Kish ran for a school record of 1.084 yards in a season and 252 yards in a game. Tim Nunes and captain Dan Toomey also set new records. Nunes throwing for 18 touchdowns. 8 of which were caught by Toomey defensively. All-conference Honors went to Ron Hunt. Terry Factor. Pat Risha and Ron Wilson. With 14 of the 22 starters graduating. DiSpirito will face a major rebuilding task next season. But with the younger varsity players gaining new experience and new players coming off a 4-1 J.V. The grapplers of Coach Fred Powell kept rolling along as they turned in their usual sparkling record again this wrestling season, earning a 16-1 record (losing only to State Champs, Clarion). This was truly a team effort as Powell had the misfortune of losing his co-captains, All-American Tom Cox and Dan Grobe. both of whom had knee injuries. Highlights of the season were a win against U.D. ranked Arizona, a second place in the team competition in Ihe PSCAC meet and a 15th place in the NCAA College Division meet. Outstanding performances were turned in by Jack Spates, in winning the State Title. College Division Championships and participating in the University Division meet at the 118 lb. level. To the astonishment of many, SR showed it to the Missourians, came out fourth (3-2), and received their first national ranking. In addition to the team's great success, there were outstanding individual players honored at the tournament’s end. Leading scorer Mark Balbach was named to the NAIA tourney's second team and given All-America status (Honorable Mention). Major factors in the upsurge were the leadership of Captain Bill Wright, the steadiness of three-year letterman Steve Heasley. the all-around brilliance of Bob Swonick (who finished 2nd in the individual placings in the L.E.L.
