Social Studies Club The Physical Education Majors Club is made up of all the health and physical education majors on campus who wish to join. This year the club had almost 100% membership. Two major purposes are to have the members become more professional in their field and to have authorities in health and physical education speak to the organization to tell the members what the latest developments arc in this field. The organization is in its second year and it is hoped that in the year ahead it will become one of the leading clubs on campus. The Social Studies Club is an organization which offers the opportunity to all students to meet with prominent men in the field of Social Studies. In addition. the Club attempts to bring together faculty members and students in order to promote a better academic and social relationship. Furthermore, the Social Studies Club strives to arouse a greater student interest by informally pres-senting subjects that reach beyond the realm of the formal classroom. 64 This is an organization for students who arc interested in any form of forensic activity, such as debate, discussion, extemporaneous speaking, and oratory. Opportunity is given for intercollegiate activities on both the local and state levels, and the interest of the participating students determines the type and extent of activity. The height of the debating season is the Debater’s Congress, held in the Spring of each year at Penn State. The aim of this synchronized swimming organization is to promote and continue an interest in this phase of aquatics and gain further knowledge as well as ability in synchronized swimming skills. Synchronized swimming is the interpretation and expression of music through acquatic movements. This comparatively new form requires endurance and versatility in the use of all strokes, not specialization in one. Debate Club J. Lampkins. Vice-President; R. Balkcy, E. Ubcr, President. Rocket Ripplers It also requires a keen sense of rhythm. In this type of swimming, there is more opportunity for the swimmer of average ability. Row I: P. Madden, B. Jones. Publicity; N. The traveling troop is open to all members of the club. The purpose of this club is to provide an opportunity for those interested in officiating to gain knowledge and experience in that field. Through this knowledge and experience, the ultimate goal is to provide better officials. Once a year the club shall demonstrate and interpret to the student body the basic rules and rule changes of basketball. The club also helps the members to obtain a PIAA license in any sport in which they arc interested. 66 Officials Club WAA The motto of the Women’s Athletic Association is “A sport for every girl, a girl for every sport.” The W.A.A. is for all women regardless of curriculum. The Council, which is composed of twenty women, heads the organization. F.ach woman is responsible for setting up the intramural tournament, class tournament, and the Green and White tournament of her respective sport. Football In I960, the Slippery Rock Football Team posted its finest season record in twelve years. The highly successful record of 5-1-2 was attributed to an ultimate in team effort, supplemented by an unconquerable attitude and spirit, and to an outstanding effort by the coaching staff. As a result of the team's improvement. Coach Godlasky was named one of two district coaches of the year. The high point of the season was the 18-0 shutout of the highly-touted Westminster Team. The fact that it turned in a 3-5-2 record was due to the lack of an effective scoring punch. The high point of the I960 season was the Hooters win over Lock Haven. Lock Haven had lost only one contest before running afoul of the Rockets. Although it is not shown in the record, every team that faced the Rockets knew they had been in a ball game. S.R. The 1960-61 version of Basketball at Slippery Rock was extremely exciting and highly rewarding for both player and observer. Under the guidance of Coach Henry Baierl and team captains Dan Feruck and Ed McFarlanc. a 15-6 record was compiled by the team. During the entire season the Rockets were never completely eliminated from any game until the final buzzer was sounded. Probably the most outstanding victory and team effort came with the defeat of Alliance, a team which had already received a berth in the State N.A.I.A. playoffs. Highest individual honors go to Ed McFarlanc, a Junior, who during much of the season paced the State College Conferences in scoring. At the end of the season Ed had compiled 509 points and a 61.7 per cent shooting average. He had an overall average of 24.6 points per game, and led the Stale College Conferences in this department. The Junior Varsity Team, coached by Robert Weller, compiled a fine 16-2 record. The high point of the J.V. season was their victory over the Pitt J.V.’s. The many returning Varsity lettermen and an outstanding J.V. squad present an extremely encouraging outlook for Basketball at Slippery Rock. S IOIN3S As the class of 1961 leaves Slippery Rock, they pause to look back on their four years— During their freshman year. Homecoming was completely forgotten because of the flu epidemic. May Day brought a Freshman Queen, Miss Nancy Nalcpa, to the throne. As Juniors. Homecoming was made especially memorable by the winning of the Second Place award for their float. Snow White. Another great triumph for them was having the Glenn Miller Orchestra for their spring festivities. Another gracious Queen from this class was Miss Joan Parker who reigned over the Homecoming festivities from the time the huge bonfire was lighted on October 14, until Sunday. October 16. 1960. The Senior Dinner Dance, held January 7, was a great success. The dance was held in the not-quite-com-plctcd Hut. Finally Commencement Day arrived, and with pride and a feeling of accomplishment. they received their degrees from Slippery Rock State College. Secretary. Elinor James Treasurer.
